Without having numbers directly in front of me, I'm pretty sure Cotchin was the benefactor of a large "state of game" weighting. As I'm sure you are all aware, all points are weighted based on the margin at the time of the event and how long there is left in the game. Having a strong contribution late in a tight game receives a high weighting. We're aware of the criticism against this and Cotchin's game is one example that constantly gets raised. We're monitoring it this year with a view to reducing the maximum possible weight assigned in close matches but the weighting will never be removed completely. Performing well when the game is up for grabs is what players build reputations on, not by going missing or alternatively, by getting cheap touches once the game is out of reach of one team.
