The third time Carlton and Collingwood will meet in a season opener, the first time they’ll do so while harbouring realistic flag expectations. In their only loss of 2020, the Blues were bashed around by a meaner Magpies midfield. Theoretically the introduction of Elise O’Dea (who kicked three goals in ten minutes during her previous outing at Princes Park for premiership points) will alleviate those issues for Harford, Prespakis and co. But are they getting that same player from the first quarter of R6 2018 or just somebody who looks like her?

No other match for the round reads like a plausible grand final preview on paper, though Friday night’s affair is just as tough to split. I’m hoping the Saints resist the urge to play scared, unlike last year's encounter when they swarmed the stoppages after quarter-time to stop the short-term bleeding in exchange for long-term gain.

West Coast, North Melbourne and Richmond all enter the season with a new coach and, for different reasons, have each landed a pretty good fixture to gauge how the transition is tracking. Nevertheless, drawing conclusions from R1 form is almost as risky as taking practice match results seriously. So although I feel compelled to assign my 50-pointer to the Dockers, it is due to 24-month form rather than GWS conceding 23 scoring shots in their warm-up against Adelaide (who I’m tipping to put in a solid showing this weekend, regardless of the outcome of the Marinoff appeal).

Since the mood around Melbourne’s chances this year are already so gloomy (for example, no discussion in the AFLW thread on their club board since the trade period), I won't pile on by predicting this week to be their annual one-that-got-away game against a scrappy underdog in sloppy conditions (even though it has all the makings). And, bigger picture, I see no good reason why the Demons (one of last year’s four non-eliminated preliminary finalists, one of the two main pioneering clubs of the competition, the only team to have won more games than lost in every season to date) should be thought less of coming into 2021—especially by their own supporters!

Tickets for this weekend's games in Perth will now be released on Wednesday morning instead.

The wash-up from today: All 1300 available tickets for Punt Road were sold, so too nearly half of the 7500 tickets for Ikon Park, and 1800 of 3800 tickets for Moorabbin. Wouldn't recommend waiting until the last minute to book for those latter two, though obviously not as much of a demand for the games at Carrara and KP.

I can’t seem to be able to find tickets to kp or Moorabbin?

TV note
The broadcast guide is still not available on the AFLW website, and the Foxtel guide hasn't been updated to reflect the new fixture.

However, www.yourtv.com.au has the schedule lined up with what I put in the original OP post... with one exception: they have the Eagles-Crows game on 7mate in Adelaide rather than the main channel (which makes sense because it'd run into the 6pm news). So I'll go with that for the time being.

This time... it's personal?

Presumably teams for that game will be announced later today. Meanwhile, Melbourne have confirmed Alyssa Bannan, Eliza McNamara and Megan Fitzsimon will all make their debut on Saturday.

I'll put all the teams in the OP too as they come out.

Pound to miss with a hand injury and McEvoy out with what turned out be a fractured cheekbone from last week's practice match. Sarah Rowe and Ash Brazill not named for Collingwood so that keeps it vaguely at a 50/50 contest for mine.

Walker is also a significant out for Carlton.

Her pace (along with Dalton who won't feature this year due to the Olympics) has been a huge weapon for us over the past couple of seasons.

Significant sounds a little strong to me. Tends to be favourably lumped in with Dalton who I've liked quite a bit more, particularly with regards to football nous.

Top-half teams cope ok when missing a player who would be picked in the 15-21 range. A fit Walker gets in ahead of Hammans, Guerin and maybe McKay... not sure anybody else.

She's not as good a footballer as Dalton (who, from memory, finished 2nd in our B&F last season) but the two of them completely transformed our side. We had next to no real pace at the club before their arrival, but now run and carry is a weapon of ours.

Whilst we have a few speedy types at the club now, it remains to be seen whether they can step up and fill the void effectively. So whilst we wait and see, I think significant is warranted.

They already looked pretty well transformed by about halfway through the R2 game of 2019 while leading by 3 goals against Adelaide. Don't think Walker had even debuted at that point.

Funnily enough, she made her debut the week after against the Giants, a game we won handsomely to arrest a 0-2 start to the season.

I'd say that speaks more to a transformation than a half of football in a game we lost.

I'd say it speaks more to Erin Phillips playing for Adelaide and not GWS.
