Wouldn't it be refreshing to have a straight shooting coach with the supporters and media. I bet that's exactly what he's said to the players internally.Reading too much into it. A coach has to back in their players. I couldn't see him answering that with: "Sheridan has been disappointing this pre-season hence why he didn't play the last JLT game", "Crozier hasn't lived up anywhere close to the potential he showed when we first drafted him", "Suban has been spudding it up for over a year now", "It's important they start showing something soon or they'll be delisted come years end"
I'm going into bat for the defence here:
If you think anyone on our list over 190cm bar A.Pearce is as good at defending as Dawson you're dreaming. Collins and Hamling would be taken to the cleaners by Hawkins. Sure Dawson sucks at everything else but until A.Pearce is back he stays in the side.
Johnson may be past it but Logue who's probably his like for like needs a bit more time - think we all agree with that. There's no way Hamling or Collins have the kicking skills required to play his role.
Spurr is a gun. If he was an above average kick he'd almost be an A grader. Kicking isn't that bad as a specialist small defender. Only problem is the guys around him should be better kicks.
Ibbo had a decent pre season and can be a gun on his day. Has shown more than anyone else we could pick for the same role and should be given first shot at it.
Sutcliffe isn't a defender but fights hard. Can defend a bit though but probably isn't good enough at kicking or defending to be seen as either a rebounder or a lockdown small defender. Basically a poor man's Spurr. Probably better off using him elsewhere if at all.
As for Weller and Crozier they can't defend at all. Good kicks but we can only really carry one of them in defence IMO. Not sure either will ever be good defenders but there's plenty of rebounders in the league that can't defend. One probably needs to make it as a half forward.
It's disappointing we didn't see Luke Ryan in the JLT series. I know he was injured but this is someone who's been drafted as a medium sized defender. Him, Logue and the return of A.Pearce are our hope but aren't ready yet and realistically won't be until the second half of the year. What we've picked ATM is the best we can do ATM and tbh I think most of them were good enough to play in sides that have been Grand Final sides. The absence of McPharlin and Duffield is huge but these guys should be able to put up a fight.

Agree with most, however, I think Hamling could hold his own against Hawkins. Did you see the opponents he beat in last year's finals series?I'm going into bat for the defence here:

he had a pretty good other 21, no pearce's in the bulldogsAgree with most, however, I think Hamling could hold his own against Hawkins. Did you see the opponents he beat in last year's finals series?

If you're using good team system like that then you also have to say he was let down by a poor team system against WCE. No pressure on the inside 50 meant he was a sitting duck against JK. Improve the midfield pressure and he'll be very good.I did but looked all at sea against JJK recently. I think he'll be a good enough defender for us but in the finals last year he was helped by good team system etc.
I dont question Dawson's ability to defend but what goals he does stop say a Hawkin's from kicking he will usually give two or three goals away per game from either a stupid free kick or a turnover with his inability to kick with any consistency or when he has the ball and panics so just hanballs it to someone in trouble.Good post.
Dawson consistently does a solid job against key forwards.
Ibbo, at his best, is an excellent intercept defender and Spurr is consistent.
Having Alex Pearce available would be great and it's likely Sam Collins will take Dawson's spot eventually.
This is big for us as he is probably Geelong's best run with player and usually does a pretty good job on a Hill/Walters. I suspect they may use Menegola as a run with player to go to one of our mids if they get off the lead a bit, so maybe a Hill or even Fyfe. I expect Tuohy to go to Walters as he has lined up on Ballas and Walters in the past and actually done a good job.Cam Guthrie ruled out, really big for us
Tabs sherro croz all out
you're all about punches and headbutts aren't youI just want to see Dawson & Suban in the side
Tabs sherro croz all out
Steven Silvagni wouldn't have fared any better in that game with the way our team played.I did but looked all at sea against JJK recently. I think he'll be a good enough defender for us but in the finals last year he was helped by good team system etc.
You will find out on Sunday , too early to melt .I know it'd never happen but it would be great to get Ross in an interview to clearly explain why guys like Suban, Sutcliffe, D.Pearce and Dawson are in the team. Particularly Suban I am just at a complete loss as to what he is actually supposed to be doing.
Sheridan and Crozier should be embarrassed by how easily Weller and Blakely have gone past them. One massive positive is that Blakely, Weller, Tucker and Langdon seem to have 'cemented' their spots and it's only theirs to lose.
