How important to our players do you think this game will be? Do we need to win to rid some of the mental scars of the granny, or will the boys still be confident in their ability and game plan after the clubs winning streaks in the last two years? As a supporter I would love us to stitch up the hawks in round 1, but is it that important to our team(compared to possibly the 09 GF)?

I hope they can use this game as a stepping stone to learning how to deal with Hawthorn. It probably means nothing, certainly as 'revenge' goes it is absolutely meaningless, as we lost the only game that counts. But we have to undo the damage that 39 loss in the last 57 games to Hawthorn have done, that and also four finals defeats to them. Overcome Hawthorn, and we can win the flag.

It's round 1, both teams will be badly lacking match practice, skills won't be great, game will be pretty scrappy. Plus our early form this year was pretty bad despite the wins.

It's just another game we have to win.

What I'm not looking forward to is continual references to the 'GF rematch' and how if we win we have somehow atoned for losing last years GF.

Message to the hype merchants....it doesn't matter what happens in round 1, it doesn't alter anything that happened on GF day 2008.

Besides, a GF rematch is only a GF rematch if you're playing in a GF again.

For all the relevance round 1 is, you might as well call it the 1963 GF replay.

dont deny it, this game is meaningful.

will set the tone for the first quarter of the season, when every team is shaky and tactics are still being perfected, confidence can take you a long way.

I hope we come out and make a statement. I doubt we'll have another game when three quarters of our team were below par on the one day, and I doubt our disposal and decision making going into the forward line will be as woeful as it was on grand final day.

I can seriously see us running amok and winning by 10+ goals plus. Won't completely eliminate the heartache of losing the GF, but will be a joy to watch regardless.

Apart from being the GF rematch, round 1 form is no indication of anything

agreed, the point i was trying to make was do we need to win so the players mindset/psyche is not damaged further after the granny dissapointment. Or do you think they have enough mental stength and self belief to get over another loss to the hawks if things pan out that way

The 2008 GF means exactly nothing more than the four points. It's too early in the season to make any kind of definitive statement of intent, no matter who you're playing.

For hoodoo purposes though, it would be nice to whop them, and not just for the 08 GF.

This.

The media can **** off and die.

Agreed, I think it is important to make a statement at the start of the season.

a cats home game would've been nice. Of course they decide to change the rule this year that the home team is the premiers and not the runner up (GF rematch v Port at AAMI). But anyway i whinged enough about that.
I'm just glad we get them twice next year to get a real good look at them before a potential finals meeting. Obviously we want the win in R1 but i dont think it's the end of the world if we lose. Honestly i'd rather smash Collingwood in round 3 more.

Its worth a lot of dollars to the home team when the game will be a near sell-out but I personally dont like the fact we will be unfurling our flag in front of your guys. I'd hate it if it was the other way round.

(PS deliberately not being provocative on your board)

Anyone want to speculate who the changes might be for the game ?

I think Croad will probably be out

I can't wait for this round.

I think we do need to prove that we can beat them. i know it wont give us the premiership but still...

I personally hope we smash them like we should have in the grandfinal.

Go Geelong!

I think you proved that in round 17.

I think it matters a lot though.

If the cats come back and win by 10 goals then the hawks will lose whatever cockiness they have about the cats going forward.

If the hawks win by 10 goals they'll just be thinking - sweet, geelong's our bunny. can't wait to play them again.

If it's closer than that then yeah I guess you can say it's just another game.

I don't think you'll be cocky at all. Well the team won't anyway.

I completely agree. Its annoying that it's been scheduled so early, as it's a blockbuster of sorts, but both teams will be rusty, in my opinion. Round three or four would have been better. Build up to something.

People enjoy heading along to round one, but merely 'cos footy is back on for real...the opponent rarely matters.
