1) Introduction

I'm pleased to present the e-mail you've all been waiting for,
the first edition of AFLTips.Com News.

As many of you know, AFLTips.Com has been running a successful
tipping comp since 1999.

This year the tipping comp is in hiatus, as the official online
tipping software that the AFL required us to use is not
adequate for a competition of the size of AFLTips.Com. Bringing
it up to an acceptable level would have required more money than
I am able to spend.

Instead I've decided to organise this newsletter in conjunction
with BigFooty.com (http://www.bigfooty.com/).

The writers are all volunteers, and we have organised a random
PRIZE DRAW from amongst our list members each week. Details of
the draw can be found here: http://www.afltips.com/winaprize.html

Hope you enjoy the newsletter. Please feel free to pass it on to
your friends and colleagues and encourage them to subscribe by
visiting the site - http://www.afltips.com/

Until next time,

3) Out of Bounds
by Phil Doyle

#6 - AFL Abolishes Football

Nothing is happening.

Nothing at all.

The AFL has succeeded in doing what Keith Dunstan and Phillip
Adams could only dream of.

They have abolished football.

After the halcyon days of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority Cup
we moved through a twilight zone that was to football what Ararat
is to nightlife.

Is it wrong this teasing yawn of a weekend, absent of
football?

Hmmm.

Maybe it's fatigue? Player fatigue, eight weeks into the year. I
can see that. A need to recover from the pre-preseason perhaps? Is
it administrator fatigue? A need to recover from whatever they've
been taking for the last
two years?

Maybe someone just lost the keys.

Whatever it is it's very mysterious.

But it all changes this weekend when the thing happens.
The real thing.

Even better than the real thing, as Bono assures me.

A Source Close To Your Humble Correspondent was rather relieved,
for she takes but a passing interest in matters tribal, and rather
enjoyed the opportunity to witness Things Other Than Football
(TOTF). TOTF are of course
irrelevant to the day to day functioning of most reasonable
people. Now is the time for all reasonable thinking people to hunt
these people from the homes and...

... sorry, I got a bit carried away there.

So what's on this weekend?

Footy, that's what's on.

And what are we playing for?

We're playing for four points, that's what we're playing for.

And who will win?

Carlton and United Breweries will win, that's who.

Essendon vs. Kangaroos
Friday 30 March - MCG

DONS TO PREVAIL AGAIN

After almost 7 months of waiting finally its here, season 2001 is
finally upon us. And what a blockbuster we have first up between
the Bombers and the Kangaroos in the battle for the prestigious
Marshmallow Cup.

There have been some outstanding clashes between these sides in
the last few years, and who could forget when they last met in
week one of the finals last year with the Bombers completely
embarrassing the kangaroo lineup to the tune of 125 points. No
doubt the Kangaroos will be out to redeem themselves for that
loss. Currently the Bombers appear to have the wood over the
Kangaroos with them winning the last four encounters and its
difficult to see this trend changing in round one.

In season 2000, the bombers swept all before them and went through
the entire year almost unbeaten bar one game. A lot can change in
six months and during the preseason their form has been scratchy
and unimpressive. Many of their players appear to be underdone;
with players such as Barnes, Hird, Mecuri and Misiti all having
little ground time over the pre-season. No doubt the longer the
season goes the better the Bombers will become.

North on the other hand have their own problems. They will look
to go into this game without King and Harvey (both suspended) and
probably Carey and Martyn with injury.

Even if both Carey and Martyn play there is no doubt the Kangaroos
will have plenty of headaches stopping the potent Essendon forward
line led by coleman medallist Matthew Lloyd and Scott Lucas.

It will be out of the centre though that this match will be won
and lost. With the Kangaroos missing two of their quality
midfielders it is difficult seeing them matching the greater depth
and ability of the Bomber onballers who will continually rotate
throughout the game. This will provide the Bomber forwards with
too many scoring opportunities with Hird, Lloyd and lucas always
willing to make the opposition pay.

It will be interesting to see how Big Sav Rocca goes in his first
appearance in the Kangaroo colors. He has lost some weight over
summer shown some reasonable form in the leadup matches but
unfortunately will be starved of opportunity and he will have one
of the best full backs around in fletcher on him to keep him in
check.

Even if Carey does play, which is highly unlikely, the Essendon
side has too much talent and depth for the current Kangaroo
outfit. The Kangaroos should give a good account of themselves at
least for a half, but the bomber machine will then hit overdrive
and come away with a comfortable victory.

VERDICT : Bombers by 35 pts.

Freo v Carlton
Saturday 31 March - Subiaco

The Blues have been the quiet achievers of footy over the last
few years. They've featured, without being given much of a
chance, in grand-finals and preliminary finals. They're a good,
if unfancied, outfit, often seen as incapable of going that next
step.

Fremantle on the other hand are routinely dismissed as crap, a
sop to a Western Australian public who are over-Weagled, and an
insurance policy on the Weagles developing unchecked into a
superclub. I think these criticisms are unfair, not the least
exemplified by the Painters and Dockers finishing above the
Weagles on the ladder last year. And given the Weagles early form
their less fancied crosstown partners could well be WA's best
hope.

Freo can play good footy, they've already knocked over Hawthorn
this year, but were insipid against Richmond. They have a quick
young side that I think might run the legs off Carlton,
especially if the Blue Boys haven't switched on to season mode.

Certainly Carlton have had their distractions, not the least of
which was 'Pretty' John Elliott doing the dance of the flaming
A's last weekend. That, and Fevola and Company's foray into
higher education, was described by Blues football manager, Col
Kinnear, as a 'learning experience' for the club.

Quite.

But either way, what do people expect? It's a football club! I
mean, fer chrissakes, Rugby League players throw shit around
motel rooms. I think it's a royal family beat up by some hack
trying to be both Woodward AND Bernstein.

The Hickmott-Hamill combination will be a bigger miss than Kouta
for the Blues.

Freo are in the dangerous position of having nothing to lose.
Their most suspect area, their light midfield, gets a boost with
the return of Toia.

Dion Woods, a forward/mid-fielder from Perth, is a chance to play
his first game against Carlton. Woods won the best player award
in the local pre-season competition, and is quite the thing of
the future.

The crowds will be fired up, it's in WA, Freo will play out of
their skins and start the year with a bang for mine.

Fremantle by 22 points.

St Kilda vs. Western Bulldogs
Saturday March 31 - Colonial Stadium

One question springs immediately to mind when considering the
outcome and importance of this match. Will the 'Cinderella'
fairytale play itself out or will the Saints slipper simply not
fit?

The Saints need a good start to the season. They have a huge
debt to repay to their supporters after a disastrous season 2000
and a first up loss is likely to shatter the good work they have
put in during the off season and set them off on that all too
familiar rollercoaster. The Bulldogs too have been written off
by many and will be hell bent on going somewhere after many
wasted finals campaigns.

The Bulldogs look more settled but lack the firepower the Saints
will have if all of their big guns are on deck. Everitt and
Capuano look set to wear down Luke Darcy in the ruck duels
through sheer weight of numbers, though Darcy needs no motivation
in his first big time hitout as the number one ruckman since
Scott Wynd retired.

The Dogs have the edge in the midfield with Johnson, West and
Brown coming up against the likes of Gale, Thompson and Hayes but
new Saints skipper Robert Harvey is a class above them all if
fully fit and his presence will lift the young players around
him.

With Stewart Loewe likely to line up at centre half forward,
Aaron Hamill will be freed up enough to cause some real headaches
leading straight out from the goal square. At the other end
Barry Hall will get the job on Chris Grant and will certainly be
given a baptism of fire in his new role. Both sides lack height
and experience in defense so we could be looking at an offensive
shootout.

The tactical battle between Malcolm Blight and Terry Wallace
promises to be intriguing. What will Blight do to combat the
probable flooding of the back half by the Dogs if the backline is
struggling to hold the Saints forwards? This is the time. The
reason Blight was recruited. The Saints fans expect answers and
a few strokes of genius from the coaching 'messiah'. Both sides
have deficiencies and both have game breakers. The challenge
will be to plug up the holes while allowing the stars to shine.

If Blight can not devise a plan to do this and the game turns
into an arm wrestle, the Doggies will be home. It is imperative
that the Saints keep the play flowing to take advantage of their
speed and marking power.

The head says the Bulldogs because they will never give up and
are the more cohesive unit. The heart says the Saints, let the
fairytale come true.

I guess I'm a sentimental kind of guy.

Hawthorn v. Collingwood
Saturday 31 March - MCG

The avian derby. The Hawks impressed with their return to
September action last August, while the relocation of Micky's
Fun Factory to the Jock McHale 'Stadium' (there's the first
footy oxymoron for the year) didn't see the on-field reversal of
fortune that the black and white army had hoped for. But the man
of many hats, Eddie Everywhere, turned around the club's off-field
fortunes last year - just ask him. Whether that will translate to
Premiership points is another matter. We're tipping the Hawks to
ruffle a few Magpie feathers on the way to a comfortable win.

Port Power vs. Brisbane Lions
Saturday 31 March - Football Park

On Saturday night, Port Power takes on the Brisbane Lions in what
is shaping up to be a clanger of a game. In almost an instant
replay of the Ansett Cup grand final, just 2 weeks ago, the Lions
will be looking to avenge their shocking loss and restore some
pride.

Both sides will be looking to kick start season 2001 with a bit
of momentum as they are tipped as being strong contenders after a
very impressive preseason.

Port has a one game advantage over the Lions in previous matches,
but twice out of the seven times the teams have lined up
together, the sides have drawn.

The Lions have copped a lot of negative media attention since the
final and thus will be really pumped to achieve well this week.
Adding to the pains of the loss, the Lions had a grueling time
with the courts as Chris Scott was suspended last week and then
Jonathon Brown appealed his three match suspension and won, so he
is clear to play on Saturday night. This will spark some Port
Adelaide crowd response, which may fire up the young star.

The Lions midfield is proving to be one of the best in the League
and will be a crucial part of this week's game. It will be
further strengthened this week with the inclusion of captain
Michael Voss after coming back from injury. However a weakness
for the Lions is their forward line, either not kicking
accurately or not making the most of the ball in their territory.
Luke Power is looking to have a good game with his ability as a
quick 'goal sneak'.

Port Adelaide on the other hand, has had the perfect run up to
the start of the season. After winning every game on the
preseason, they look very hard to beat at this stage. Some very
strong performances from Stuart Dew and Fabian Francis have
really inspired the Port side over the past few weeks.

Matthew Bishop and Mark Harwood may be able to further strengthen
the Port lineup and make a return for this weeks match. However
Barnaby French is still out for another 3-4 weeks.

Personally, I think that the Lions will bounce back and sneak a
very close win. If they do, they may be able to convince Channel
Seven to change their ridiculous lack of coverage of Brisbane
Lions matches.

Sydney v Adelaide
Sunday April 1 - SCG

The real season is finally upon us this Friday night. However,
for Sydney and Adelaide supporters the season will begin on
Sunday at the SCG. All teams will start equal. Some with more
expectation. Some with more potential.

According to many people in the media, Sydney will make the eight
while Adelaide will finish bottom four on the ladder. Sydney
will start strong favourites for this game, but Crows supporters
shouldn't take this to heart. As we all know, anything can
happen. I don't think many people were predicting Melbourne to
make the eight at the start of last season.

Out of these teams, Sydney did have the better pre-season form,
winning 2 of 3 Ansett Cup matches. Adelaide won only one of their
Ansett cup matches (against the Dogs) after getting thrashed by
Brisbane and narrowly beaten by Carlton.

Both teams have their fair share of injury worries coming into
this game. The Swans will be without Kelly (hamstring) Lewis
(broken arm) and Fitzgerald (knee) as well as Nicks and Seymour.
Adelaide will miss Vardy (knee) Jarman (calf) Burton (knee)
Richardson (knee) and Goodwin (broken finger). Crows players
facing fitness tests include Bode (calf) McLeod (groin) Hart
(Calf) Robran (knee) Edwards (hamstring) and Eccles (hamstring).

I believe the strength of Sydney is their midfield which consists
of players of the calibre of Cresswell, Schwass, Stafford, Kelly
(out injured) and others. It provides them with great drive into
the forward line. The SCG is the smallest ground, which makes
centre clearances vitally important. If the Swans can get the ball
quickly into their forward line to players such as O'Loughlin and
Goodes the Crows backmen might not be capable of doing much to
stop them.

Adelaide's midfield does boast stars such as Mcleod and Riccouto.
But the question is whether they have the forwards to kick a
winning score. Time will tell, but I don't think they do. Gary
Ayres and his recruiters have done their best to try and rectify
the problem by acquiring players like Bode (Port Adelaide),
Ladhams (Essendon), Hewitt (Kangaroos) and Richardson.
Unfortunately for the Crows these players are relatively
inexperienced.

The Swans know how to play at the SCG better than any other team.
This gives them a significant advantage, one they didn't make use
of last year when they were over-run on a number of occasions in
the last quarter. Coach Rodney Eade boldly stated their intention
for season 2001 recently "We're aiming for the top four where we
think we belong". If Sydney does in fact belong in the top four
they need to win against teams they should beat at home, such as
Adelaide.

I predict the Swans to win by 30 points.

Melbourne Demons vs. Richmond Tigers
Sunday 1 April - MCG

A few seasons ago these teams battled out an absolute thriller on
a wet, grey and wintry Sunday at the 'G. The Dees stole the game
in the dying minutes on that particular day, but my perspective as
learned from experience is that the friends of The Yellow and
Black do not like losing the close ones.

Picture jumping for cover as a fairly large fight breaks out in
your part of the crowd ... clownish beer filled fellas roll like
roundish beer filled barrels at your feet in a testosterone
filled, alcohol fuelled aggression test on whose opinion was
correct regarding the last umpiring decision. The winners of that
contest were undecided, although stats have it that the boys in
blue came out on top, with minor injuries to said wrestlers and
some chick called Sheryl who also had a go.

The scary part is that this Sunday it could almost happen again,
at least the part about the footy. The two teams are dead-set
even, the weather looks ominous, the Tigers are hungry, nay
starving for true success (ie. playing some of those elusive
finals) and the crowd will be well and truly hyped - especially
Sheryl.

Yes, it has been a longer than usual lay-off for footy fans and
you can expect the anxious, predominantly Richmond crowd to be
something of a factor in this game. But also expect the overall
result on this occasion to be different.

To under-estimate the absence of the Demons' Jeff Farmer in a game
like this would be downright ludicrous, while goal-scoring
opportunities should come to those renowned for their ability to
pick up the wet and heavy pill, bang it on the boot through the
goal face and then pump their fists in the air like idiots.
Richmond has plenty of these types (ability-wise of course), with
Daffy, Bowden, Hilton, Knights and Rogers plus new captain
Campbell who is a real threat for best on ground honours.

Providing that the big ol' medal of love doesn't weigh him down,
woewodin2000 should be able to provide some resistance with
Rigoni, Yze, Leoncelli etc plus brilliant ruckman Jeff White, to
make the match an entertaining, if not slightly sloppy spectacle
(as per unofficial Round 1 regulations).

Last but not least in importance, this game has potential to be a
blockbuster. Richmond just loves the blockbuster. They love to
win the blockbuster. Just ask their fans if you don't believe me.
April Fools Day or not - I think they'll be pretty happy with this
one.

Richmond by 11 points.

Other game tips:
Essendon by 25 points
Hawthorn by 20 points
Carlton by 32 points
Western Bulldogs by 14 points
Port Adelaide by 6 points
Geelong by 33 points
Sydney by 45 points

5) The Quick Snap

Mark Williams - now is the time to deliver.

Comment from 'The Half Back Flanker' http://www.afltips.com/people/halfbackflanker.html

Port Adelaide Power, the 2001 Ansett Cup premiers, will go into
this season with great expectations. Their pre-season form has
been excellent, with 5 wins from 5 games and a trophy for the
cabinet. But let's face it, even though they won the pre-season
competition, anything short of a finals appearance by the Power
will represent an unsuccessful year. It's the 'real' season that
matters, and at the end of the day who really cares if you win
the Ansett Cup if you don't even make the final eight?

The Power had a disappointing season in the year 2000, finishing
in 14th place with 7 wins, 14 losses and a draw from their 22
games. In addition to this, they also had a disappointing season
financially, mainly due to poor attendances at home games
(probably directly related to their lack of success on the field).

This year they have had a dream start, and would be setting
themselves to erase the bad memories of 2000. The Power would be
aiming to repeat if not better their 1999 season, easily their
best season so far, and only finals appearance to date. The
pressure will be on their coach, Mark Williams, to deliver.
Anything less than a finals appearance is unlikely to be tolerated
by the Power hierarchy and supporters alike.

An examination of Mark Williams playing and coaching profile makes
fo interesting reading. He was brought up on a diet of Port
Adelaide success, being a member of 4 SANFL premiership sides with
the Port Adelaide Magpies during his playing days. His father Fos
Williams, an AFL Hall Of Fame inductee, is a legend in South
Australia, having coached the Port Adelaide Magpies for 447 games,
including 9 premierships (6 in a row from 1954 to 1959).

But Mark Williams' didn't just play for the Port Adelaide Magpies
- his 201 VFL/AFL games for Collingwood and Brisbane, along with
his 177 SANFL games for West Adelaide and the Port Adelaide
Magpies, included many other highlights. He was selected as an
All-Australian in 1980, captained Collingwood from 1983 to 1986,
won the Copeland Trophy as Collingwood's best and fairest in both
1981 & 1985, and was also Collingwood's leading goal kicker in
1984 with 54 goals.

After completing his playing career with a premiership at Port
Adelaide Magpies in 1992, Williams embarked on his coaching career
by taking on the senior coaching role at SANFL club Glenelg from
1993-1994. During his tenure, Glenelg enjoyed moderate success,
making the finals on both occasions.

Williams then joined Essendon and served as assistant to the
master coach himself, Kevin Sheedy, from 1995-1996. Many
commentators believe that Williams is a good tactician, and this
would only have been enhanced by the time spent working under
Sheedy.

With Port Adelaide Power's entry to the AFL in 1997, Williams
returned to South Australia to take up the position as assistant
coach to Port Adelaide icon John Cahill. Amid a huge public outcry
from Power supporters, Cahill's contract was not renewed at the
end of the 1998 season, and Mark Williams became the senior coach.

The decision to promote an assistant coach to the senior position
within the same club generated a great deal of discussion in the
football media.

Surely, coaches are only replaced due to a lack of success? If
this is the reason that a new coach is required, then you would
assume that, in search of success, the club would want to appoint
someone with different ideas, strategies, etc.? Does the promotion
of an assistant to the senior role bring new ideas and strategies?
If it does, why weren't they capitalized on while he was the
assistant?

All of the reasons put forward by supporters and the media against
the promotion of Williams seemed to outweigh any perceived
benefits. But, despite all of the media attention surrounding his
appointment, Williams silenced many of his critics by making the
finals in his first year a senior coach at AFL level.

This silence was short-lived, however, when the Power had a horror
start to 2000 and found themselves on the bottom of the ladder
midway through the season. The pressure on the coach at this point
must have been extreme. Many predicted he wouldn't last the
season. Nevertheless, last Williams did, and the Power finished
the season with some good wins.

Some suggestions at the time included that the Power couldn't
afford to sack him, as they would have had to pay out his
contract. Regardless of the Power's reasons for sticking with him,
2001 is Williams' chance to prove a few critics wrong.

Port Adelaide has a well-balanced and talented squad, with a good
mix of youth and experience. It is no longer an acceptable excuse
that "they are new to the AFL" - this is their 5th season and they
now have plenty of AFL experience, including being the current
Ansett Cup champions. Despite his excellent credentials and wealth
of football experience, anything short of a finals appearance in
2001 by the Power will most likely bring with it a set of marching
orders for their senior coach.

Mark Williams, now is the time to deliver.

Nice preview of most games (the Hawks vs Woods was a little underdone imho) and the trivia questions a good touch.

Good work overall guys, like the non-partisan aspect of the reviews.

Cheers

I agree with Grendel, most of the previews were excellent, the Hawk vs. Pies needed a lot of filling out though.
One area, most of the previews were done by nuetral supporters, which is best IMO, however Josh, who did a very grood preview, still couldn't quite hide his Lions bias, this is not a complaint, just an observation, because if I did a Port preview, I also would be biased.

No, two Previewers did not submit their games by the deadline (or at all) so the Hawks v Col game was taken from somehere else on short notice while there was no reserve Geel v West Coast preview anywhere. It is unfair to get somebody to write a preview in case somebody else doesn't come through as it is a bit of thought and effort to do if chances are it won't be posted.

One of the preview truants is well known and often argued with by most of you. No surprise to me though.

The particular person who failed to submit their preview might just find himself canned from this site. I'm sick of him and so are most people.

Bluey are you trying to say EASTY is gone?
