Oh precious Sunday afternoon footy, how I've missed you as a permanent fixture of my weekend.

The new-look Dees are back in action for 2026, sans the likes of Simon Goodwin, Christian Petracca, Clayton Oliver, Steven May and Charlie Spargo, plus Jack Viney and Jake Bowey (temporarily).

In fact, in the super fun fantastic four and a half years since the 2021 flag, we've lost/canned 11 of the 23 players from that day, plus the senior coach, a bunch of assistant coaches, numerous sponsors, a few BigFooty moderators, a media team, a president and a CEO. We still don't have a home base, but maybe after we completely reset the club 2-3 more times we'll finally get there.

So why do I feel better about the Dees than I have in years? Outside of the blatantly obvious (the death of GoodyBall and everything it represented), Melbourne heads into 2026 with some clear air, the promise of an exciting gameplan (that actually seems legitimate this time), some terrific young talent headlined by the likes of the Picketts, Langford, Rivers, Windsor, Lindsay, Taylor, Turner, Culley and JVR, a good media department, plus the long-awaited return of Nuffkent.

In Round 1, we come up against this year's ultimate preseason hype team, St Kilda, who obliterated the trade and free agency market, signing a bunch of players who have have made a combined one (1) All-Australian team to some absolutely eye-watering deals. But they did re-sign the AFL's first two-million dollar man, and if we're being honest, he's worth every penny.

J Viney, three votes.

Well Melbourne had gone and done it.
The Dees had finally won it.
With Clarry drinking Revs completely dry
Petracca's ruptured spleen made us cry.
While Angus lay unconcious when Maynard tried to fly.

We're talkin' Demons
From the 'G to Optus Stadium
Talkin' Demons
James Jordan and Neal-Bullen
The Dockers were coming for Dogga
Steve May and his run-in with the law.
We're talking Goodwin
Chompers and Brayshaw

Saints will obviously go in as favourites.
Having 3 full games to our 1 and 3/4 will be handy for them.
If there was no round zero and this was both our first game of the season I wouldn’t be extremely concerned but it’s not a great thing for us.

Still positive about the season but I reckon we'll get rolled pretty badly.
Big watch for me is Gawn. Crap in SOO and then was good in the ruck against North and Richmond but both had rucks who preferred the stand and wrestle. Keen to see how he goes against an athletic guy like De Koning, might be hard to stop if he gets a roll on

Plus with less throw ins around the ground now and quicker bounces it might be alot harder for him to set up behind the ball to take marks which dulls him even further.
He's a champion player so maybe he adjusts no issue but I definitely have an eye on it

You know what, nuffkents back. I'm bloody annoyed that stupid round 0 is happening and we ain't playing for 2 weeks. Im keen to have a squiz at our first game

Yeah it'll be very interesting to watch the ruck. If we are to win this IMO we need 10+ from JVR/Mihocek/Fritsch, the saints will open us up pretty easily.

I know I sound like a doomer but I just think our start to the year is tough, and the saints look primed.

Yeah reckon we'll need to kick 90+ to win. Our midfield and back 6 doesn't fill me with well keep em to 70 especially early in the season when everyone's fresh

No disrespect to Nas but holy shit am i sick to ****ing death of hearing his name 😂 😂 😂
Surely even Saints supporters are sick of him getting sucked off in the media every minute.

Dees by plenty.

I’m picking he adjusts. This is a clever, thinking player who can work things through.

Might not adjust round one necessarily but I’d back him to get there over the year.
