**** me what is with the doom merchants on this board. Do they put something in the water up in Adelaide? Lynch plays and we win that. Our structure clearly failed because we ran out of legs, helped none by the fact we played 3 debutantes who could barely run in the last. I hate losing as much as anyone but it's round 1, get a grip. We will have a good year.

Complete midfield failure. Again.

Second tier midfield non existent, leaving too much to a poor Sloane, under siege Gibbs and Crouch.
CEY and Greenwood useless for most of the game.
Atkins terrible.
Hampton bad then injured.
Douglas atrocious and likely to be suspended.
Mackay had 2 nice kicks but the rest of the time proved he still isn't an AFL body
Jacobs continuing on from the grand final: disappointing to say the least

I usually see what you see. Go watch the third again. It was CEY giving us first use that got us back into it.
Dougie atrocious? I’ll have to go watch again.

Perhaps the most positive of the night was Doedee. I was very much on the PICK BURTON YOU DUMB ****S camp. But I am very happy with what I saw tonight. He can seriously play. A very, very good first game that will likely fly under the radar of all the commentary
Doedee was very good

It was pretty inevitable. We've looked like a lot of Round 1 Grand Final teams do all pre-season - good when it clicks but ultimately four weeks behind. Needed to snag it if we could, but couldn't capitalise at crucial times. When you're playing a good team in Melbourne you just have to kick the clutch goals.

Essendon will be good this year. We could've played a poor team tonight, won in a scrap, and felt all warm and fuzzy. Instead we faced a Top 4 contender and fell short.

We certainly won't see us playing the open, free-flowing scoring blitz that we saw in the first month last year. We will need to grind wins against Richmond and St Kilda to get ahead of the ledger until we get players back. It might benefit us in the end.

Blow me down. A realist.

I don't trust our backs when they're under pressure. In the air or on the deck. Laird maybe, though he's panicked a bit in the past.

Brown & Mackay on kick-in duty is 'meh'.

We lack run off half back and through the guts. We're too dour- it's all inside mids & lock down defenders.

I'd like to know what it's like to support a team with some aerial supremacy. Would be nice to jag a few marks over the ground.

We did well to grind it out and get a lead given the outs. But good teams win from there. We always struggle to change the momentum at critical times. We ran out of legs tonight, but the capitulation was predictable. Need a group of smart and tough leaders in that situation. Dig in, hold possession, slow it down.

Fog looks good, ditto Doedee.

Pretty poor management to have half our best 22 out of the team round 1. Take Lynch and Brodie Smith out and we are an fairly average side. Gov and eddie need to do more, both totally out of form along with jenkins who lacks heart. Atkins is a total downhill skier, always likes it on his terms. Mackay tried but its david mackay. Talia and hartigan major worries, talia has no offensive aspect to his game. Hampton is not afl quality, feel he will go the way of menzel. Long way to go but the first half of the season is crucial, sooner we get players back the better.

Yeah you're right we should've kindly asked those injuries to wait for a more convenient time to happen.

Richmond didn't seem to run out of juice?

Richmond played Carlton.

Like I said earlier, if we played Carlton tonight we would've won and felt all nice and fuzzy, and the way Richmond played I doubt they would've beaten Essendon over four quarters.

Strong last quarters from Laird, Talia and DMac - the ball was in their area all quarter

Poor last quarters from Gibbs, Crouch and Sloane.

Against an Essendon team playing one short most of the night, who also happens to be their best midfielder.

That’s nice that people want to defend Sloane because at least he was chasing. Second to the ball and applying pressure is not his role, winning the ball is his role. He wants the big money contract and he should be standing up in moments like this.

Did you see the service blokes in the forward line were getting? Awful

It was shit I agree, but Fogarty managed to turn a lot of those entries into 50/50s purely on his ability to read the game. Gov is freakish but I wouldn’t say he has a massive footy I.Q.

Looks very down on confidence also.

Geez... I joined BF after last year’s gf.. so this is actually the first time I’ve been a part of the pre/during/post game BF analysis of an actual game (ie not preseason game etc etc)...

And I’ve gotta say... wow... there’s some hysterical meltdowns!..

We went into this game missing many of our best players including Brouch, Lynch and tex and we were playing away from home against a side that should find themselves in or about the top 8 this season.. people need to calm down.

The game should’ve been over at half time... but testament to our guys we clawed our way back into the lead at 3 quarter time... then we simply ran out of legs in the last which was always going to happen with a shorter preseason than our opponents and several of our players not really ready.

But f*ck me, it’s not the end of the world ffs... there are some fantastic positives to take from it... the best being doedee, he was one of our best tonight.

And there are some of our starting 22 that need to take a long hard look at themselves... Atkins is one of those.

The season has only just begun. It’s a Marathon not a sprint.

When Sauce taps it down their throat he has to chase.

Fog and Doedee showing some very promising signs. Got a bright future here. Doedee in the 3rd was instrumental to our lead

Sloane fought so hard yet again, Gibbs, Mrouch and Laird all extremely good.

The Bombers are going to be very good this year, but we could have won that easy. Our second and third tiers really let us down tonight. Too many passengers.

Hopefully this can be mended in the coming weeks, but we've seen it before from a lot of our guys

It’s not his role and never has been his role. When Danger and Thommo left he was best man standing. He isn’t your major ball winner in a premiership side.

Geez the Douglas, Gibbs, McGovern and Greenwood misses in that final term really compounded the issue especially when your running around with a unfit, unorganised ramshackle outfit and you get those good chances inside 50’s.
This. Should've iced the game and didn't
