Fog did what he needed to. Showed some special things, tried hard, and didnt get injured. To be fair, our midfield entries were terrible.
Doedee again showed what he needed to. Got showed up a couple of times, but he didnt fall apart after them and kept trying all night.
He is NO replacement for Lever, not at all. As I have said, he isnt the intercept marker Jake is, and doesnt have the leap and punch Jake did. He also lacks Jakes height. He is a more atheltic version of Kelly.
So I dont think he can be judged as Jake.
He seems like a quality bloke, so I hope he makes it.
Oh he will make it !
And it's his first game , and was playing on a Bohemeth which won't happen every week

He will intercept mark and has other features to his game that Lever hasn't so swings and roundabouts. Let's see where he is at after 40 games

Liked what I saw

Maybe I was too negative pre game but we surpassed my expectations - I was expecting a big loss and thought there were some good signs

Dmac and Seeds were great overall , Atkins a bit more of a man but needs 4 quarter performance

Laird and Matt Crouch are elite

Great signs from Doedee - he will get easier games on on smaller opponents and dominate them , but just thought he was clean , smart and competitive

Fog showed enough but not his year

Good having Gibbs ! Great start and will get better with synergy

Talia was magnificent and Harto held up overall

Our forward line will be our weakness as I've been banging on about all pre season , Lynch and Tex will help though

Lever and Smith are much better players than Cameron but we COULD miss Cameron more than them if Galluci and whoever else don't come thru soon as Eddie is past his peak which is nothing unexpected and who else have we got as a dangerous small forward with speed ?

Ah I'm worried re that one and have been for months , time to step up Galluci

Sauce injured ? JJ played more time in ruck than usual and Sauce not himself

Did we win one centre bounce clearance all night ? Monstered in there ! Clarke's fault again ? Was very odd

He will not be the intercept and high leaping spoiler Jake is. You can try and rationalize it anyway you like, but anyone thinking he has Levers skillset is nuts. That doesnt mean he wont be a great defender.

Whilst true, it is worth noting that the height and wingspan was what made Lever a luxury as a loose defender.

Doedee showed enough he too will end up a top defender but more in the Gibson mould.

Looking back one things for certain, that Etihad deck really exposed our severe lack of pace, Essendon’s overlap off half back left our half forwards in their dust and strolled past our guys in the middle... que Neil Craig saying stifled ball movement makes the team look slow not the lack of speedy players

Made a good decision not to bother with this game in the end. Completely disillusioned with the failures of this mediocre club and the sport in general.

Heading for a 2013-esque season here.

Would have thought it was a perfect match of mediocrity then between you and the club

Go wear teal.

Strong last quarters from Laird, Talia and DMac - the ball was in their area all quarter

Poor last quarters from Gibbs, Crouch and Sloane.

Against an Essendon team playing one short most of the night, who also happens to be their best midfielder.

That’s nice that people want to defend Sloane because at least he was chasing. Second to the ball and applying pressure is not his role, winning the ball is his role. He wants the big money contract and he should be standing up in moments like this.

Super post :thumbsu:

I think the failure of JJ, and to a lesser extent Gov (lesser because of size and type) in providing a marking target, hitting up, and giving focus to our forward sorties is the reason Betts kept flying

Someone has to attack the ball in the air to create the ground contest, and seeing as no one else had the conjones he took it on himself like the little champ he is

No point in him staying down to crumb the non-existent contest. He’d been doing that all game and it wasn’t working so he’s decided to throw himself up and at it

His game was the symptom not the problem

We set up a forward line with only an 18 year old kid as any sort of physical target, no wonder he ran out of puff.

Without Tex and Lynch to do the heavy lifting did Jenkins step up? No he left it to little Eddie Betts to attack the aerial contests in the second half

It would be different if we fielded our best 22 and lost, I could see how we can improve and beat Richmond.

But we have issues all over the ground. Thats not even counting the heavy loss of players post GF and the mental scars of the GF too.
The guy with the biggest scar didn't play, and the one with the next biggest (externally) played quite well

Still not sure it was pace related, we blitzed them a number of times. Most of their quick players are terrible with ball in hand too, ATW aside

Agreed

Even with Lynch and Tex we have an emerging forward line problem

Big guys don't play like big guys and we look thin on smalls

We will beat up the shitty teams

The good

M crouch
Gibbs
Laird
Seedsman
Mackay
Sloane (slow start but finished off well)
Doe dee
Forgarty

The bad

Jacobs - better second half but terrible first half.
Jenkins - did some good things but doesnt put his body on the line.
Hampton - terrible decision maker
Ellis yolmen - no skills and not a great decision maker

The ugly

Hartigan - don't rate him at all. Has the size but doesn't use it at all. Has no football brain and panics under pressure. Close my eyes when he goes near the ball.

Talia - good defender but no offensive game what so ever. Panics under pressure.

Betts - totally out of form at the moment

Atkins - totally lazy effort and lacks fitness. His defensive game has to improve.

Douglas - lacked fitness and like Atkins no defensive pressure at all.

Fitness - can't believe we can have so many players out or lacking fitness for round one

Tackling was ordinary.

Lack of run from defence. It's an understatement to say we are going to miss smith this year. No coincidence that we generally played ordinary last year when smith was stopped or didn't play
WTF?! Douglas has 6th most pressure acts of ANYONE in the game last night! His defensive pressure was fine!

Whenever we have lost a game we have not gone on to beat a Top 8 side, generally its been a bottom team that we beat the week after.
Because we played a bottom team the week after. Bit hard to beat a top team the week after if we're not playing one.

Last year:
Lost to North - next week - Melb (lost - not top 8), Brisb (won)
Lost to Geelong - next week - Saints (won)
Lost to Hawks - next week Carlton (won)
Drew to Collingwood - next week Port (won)
Lost to Sydney - next week West Coast (lost but game was irrelevant), GWS (final, won)

Im calling it.. after the round 5 clash when Sydney destroy us we will be 1-4 and there's no coming back from that. Its going to be a long season. Too soft, too slow and mental scars that will play havoc on the team all year.

They didn't want to win simple as that. Maybe if they played more attacking football in the 4th quarter and tried to actually score more instead of hoping for something it may have been a different result. I walked out and stopped watching the game with 3 minutes to go, it was gone. Poor coaching, poor belief cost us. No messing around against a team on the road that will finish in the middle stages of the ladder (5th to 12th) because these are the hardest games to win.

We could be in for another long season after a missed opportunity the year before. It kind of feels like 2007 and 2013 all over again right now and in both those seasons we threw away so many games. Even if we manage to beat Richmond next week there is still a lot more work to do and in R3 I wouldn't be taking St Kilda lightly either.

You might be possibly correct. But we'll see where we stand after round 5. Hopefully they'll sort themselves out and be 3-2 or 4-1 instead.

If you ever posted anything other than negative whiny bullshit with no basis in fact then some might be inclined to listen to you but I reckon we'll just chuck this one on the ever growing pile that is Jpetro's shit posts.

Well that would mean we lost to Collingwood at home, which strikes me as a tad pessimistic. AFter a match where despite playing away with 1/4 of our best 22 not playing we really threw it away.
