It is quite strange how West coast do struggle at footy park - I'm hoping that this form continues as I will actually be at that game :D

yes, we have never played at all well there. whatever form or gameplan we bring seems to be forgotten and replaced with mindless robots who stuggled to kick over 5 goals.

having said that we did reasonably well against port last year. would have had a chance if we didnt kick 9.22

Shirley will get taken to the cleaners by Matera.

The most recent match-ups by most teams has been to play a tallish player on Matera - I'd go with Begley.
I had a vision of Edwards going back, then I realised they were beer goggles I was looking through. I do agree the taller option is the way to go and to play in front of him so he needs to reach over to get the ball. Lets be honest Matera wont fly to take the speccy.

Would Basset be in the other pocket? Why not Torney on Matera?

I am tipping Adelaide( then again I will tip Adelaide in about 20 games) but I think the home ground advantage will help us and also just think WC forward line is fragile. Sampi , McDougall and Matera will kick 3 each and Gardiner WILL I repeat WILL play CHF and kick 2. Can we kick more than 15 with ours?

On paper, Eagles WILL - barring any pre-season mishaps - field a stronger team than us.

However, our lineup will probably be decent and at Footy Park we'll sneak over the line IMO (even without the suspended Goodwin).

This is a big test for the Eagles. A win at Footy Park (their current graveyard) would signify a huge increase in their own and supporters' belief that they can go all the way this year. If they lose, it may signify that they'll
- once again - only be so-so.

Suffice to say, it's also a big game for us. Especially considering the toughness of our rounds 2-4 (Collingwood at Telstra, The Power, Sydney at the SCG).

I'd be bloody delighted if we are 2-2 after 4 rounds.

With no Benny Hart who will we play on Matera? Begley or perhaps start Edwards in the backline, given his lask of preparation.

Exeter, how do you think the Eagles will structure their forward line? Gardiner CHF, McDougal FF, with Seaby in a FP? Notice Lynch played a game @ CHF, but gather the preference is to play him @ CHB?

We need a fit Goody, Edwards & Thompson back, as the Weagles midfield is about the best in the business ... otherwise we could be in danger of getting smashed.

I think Begley if selected but if not, Johncock for me. He can run off him and hurt them the other way. When he does theough he needs to be backed up by his fellow defenders in case we turn it over.

Begley has the potential to be an excellent defender of smalls or mediums if he can get an injury free run.

i'ld have Begley on Matera

and i'ld like to see Stiffy play up back all year (or at worst playing up back with the occassional run on the ball swapping with maybe Goodwin, Roo or Reilly)

as for a tagger - geez i was hoping we could groom somebody for the role in preparation for a premiership tilt in several years - therefore not Shirley :D

Begley would be the go as he has good discipline & footy brain to go with Matera. Johncock is better suited to play as an attacking HBF, so Torney would be my 2nd choice if Begley wasn't available.

I forgot about the Goody suspension, so we will need Edwards as part of the midfield rotation. Adding to the doubt over Thompson, it probably means we will need to pick Shirley as a defensive option on Judd.

Good question - I don't know.

McDougall will be short of a gallop come round 1 so I suspect they might start Lynch at FF. Gardiner or Hansen at CHF. Matera too hasn't played preseason but is expected to be fit for round 1. Seaby will interchange with Cox in the ruck and should take 1 FP with Matera in the other. HFFs should be Embley and Sampi both of whom are in rare, albeit pre-season, form.

I think Staker or Hunter will take CHB if Lynch is at FF. Throw in the feed from Judd, Cousins, Fletcher (who to my mind is more damaging than Judd), Kerr, Braun and possibly Stenglein and it looks good from where I sit.
If Lynch plays @ FF on Rutten it will be the battle of the young buck trucks. I have confidence that our defence can hold most of the Weagle's forwards ... but if the Weagles midfield get way on top, it may be irrelevant.

Tell me about Rutten - don't know him. Is he as ugly as Lynch?

The point about irrelevance is an intersting one. Do you mean that it's our midfield that will kick the goals or that your defence will just be overrun and our forwards will benefit from that?

I wouldn't call Rutten ugly, but like Lynch, he is a very big unit.

A bit of both with repect to your midfield, if they dominate - they will kick goals & open the flood-gates for your forwards in terms of opportunities.

As Kane said Rutten is a big unit, 191cm and 96kgs. he is 21(?) years old and was promoted a few years ago from the rookie list. He played his first ever game against Freo up forward and kicked a goal with his first 3 kicks in AFL.
He sort of went backwards with Ayres and it wasnt until Ayres' departure that he got a gig for Adelaide, this time at FB against Neitz. He did pretty well with Neitz only kicking 1-2 goals. Since then he has been very solid down back.
He gives the impression of being a bit slow but he is actually pretty quick over 20m. He does lack agilty though but I feel he combats this with his positioning and footy smarts.
He has a few doubters but I think he has the ability of holding down the FB position for the AFC for the nest 10 years.
Should be a good match up if they do end playing against each other.

going on the pic in the calendar the girls in the office were very happy with mr february (but much happier now that it's march :D ) but then again they are soccer followers and I would not inflict lynch on them as I am trying to convert them to aussie rules fans

yes, but in Quentin Lynch we've got something the Crows haven't

a genuine 1970s pr0n star
But we have "Freddy" Krueger for that role.
