Dunks is our only real defensively minded mid, too valuable in that role.
Berry can do the role if required but obviously that requires reshuffling of the wing role (not that we can do it this week either).

Im not convinced by the two rucks either. It doesnt aid us enough in the ruck or the dominance that Gawn has getting back and marking around the ground. And it slowed down our forward line a huge amount. If Oscar is sore rotate him for a rest and just play Fort. I get its tough to find who can back up the game but every team has this issue, it also only matter for a couple of minutes a quarter and often against a guy from the opposition who is almost as bad as our options. JVR isnt great in the ruck either

Gawn's clutch marking all over the ground is such an asset, I'd love to see how we can use Payne to get to those contents and nullify him in the air as much as possible (especially against a weaker tall forward line)
Would really love to see how good our team would be if we had a really good Tap Ruckman like Gawn or Natanui at his best

Give him an extended rest please, keep him on ice until after the bye(round 16), we want O flying come finals.

Surely a rest would do more good than harm.
A bit ridiculous to have continued to play him up until now, considering we have a decent backup and the position on the ladder

It explains playing both Fort and Gardiner as sub, but clearly shows we still just try and play the "best 23" as much as possible with less thought on resting across the season. We are on top of the ladder and really should be smarter about resting crucial players like him from rough away trips against lesser opposition.

Rest him up now, play Fort and accept we will probably lose the ruck battle (likely would anyway) and just plan around that

This is what Sam said the Lions were doing in regards to this in the SEN article
It’s understood the Lions have no immediate plans to rest him and are instead being guided by their ruckman’s pain levels and his ability to complete main training sessions, which he’s so far been able to do.

Jesus christ, can fagan look at what collingwood are doing with managing their best players and copy that please? I love Fagan, but in moments like these, it's very easy to be critical of him. And i'm really trying my hardest not to right now.

It's bizarre. We got smashed by the 2nd best ruck in the comp on Sunday because Big O couldn't give 100%. How does Fagan think he's going to go against the #1 ruck in the comp when we face Melbourne?

No doubt O just wants to play but Yer sometimes you have to show some tough love, bite the bullet and do what is in the long term interests of the player and team.
If he was playing through injury and playing well enough to hold his spot fair enough.

But he's not.

Seeing we have such a crash hot M/F and so many options surely they can work out what Gawn's up to.

I seem to remember Fort doing well against him at some point.

The other issue is obviously our medical team believe Oscar isn't setting any recovery back by playing . You would have to presume that. So the question is is he helping the team in his present condition or not.

We managed to eke out a draw against one of the weakest teams in the competition and besides some of our elite midfield not performing the 2 biggest factors imo were Xerri killing us, and losing run bringing Gardiner on and them gaining run with their sub.

So maybe we take some learnings away from that game.

Hi all, my first post....

It's a bit of a worry we are carrying these kinds of injuries so early in the season. And following the Melbourne game we have the Hawks after a 6 day break (Hawks have a 9 day break) and Essendon after a 5 day break (the Bombers have 6 days).

We are also in the last group of teams for the bye at round 16.

Would be great to see Coleman back if he's ready. Also would be good to give Beecken an opportunity given how consistently well he's done in the 2's.

Question for the selection panel playing Omac and Fort is, why do we need to play two rucks/one ruck and ruck relief?

I've watched a lot of footy over the rounds so far, and we're one of the only teams that runs a dedicated forward who rucks. Sure, it worked when we had Steph, but then Omac largely played on his own when he left. Sure, Daniher played in the ruck, but that seemed to be the only way to get him into the game.

The selection panel needs to make the call for two rucks/ruck relief, or just the one ruck.

Let Omac rest this week and bring in Gallop/Lloyd as a pure forward. Let Fort attempt to equal Gawn in the ruck, then let Fort do his 7th midfielder-who-hand-passes deal that he does well. Have Hippy or whoever is brought in ruck in the forward half where required.

If Dunks can negate Trac or Picket in the middle, Gawn being able to tap won't mean much. Forwards just need to kick straight this week. Hopefully Bruce or Marshall get another crack on the wing.

absolutely.
Reckon Kai is a long way from currently being 100%, and without Linc and just having established himself, he might feel like he needs to play.

Xerri is a beast he is extremely physical in the manner he plays lays a massive amount of tackles per game and if I'm going to be honest he beats the shyte out of his opponent most weeks it would have been a task if O was a 💯 in Tasmania.
I agree with resting O this week if he is sore.
Gawn will play a good game the trick will be negating The Dees other match winners...I really hope Starc is back soon I feel Kosi will be a major thorn in our side this week.

I am a tad worried about Kosi as well, always seems to go well against us, does not need many touches to cause damage, I assume Answerth goes to him.

Also think this game will be very tough, the Dees have played some decent footy the last few weeks albeit in patches, we would not want to take them lightly like we did North.

💯 on Kossi he slays us keeps them in games against us and i always get nervous when he is near the ball inside our D50.
Melbourne like a low scoring game if Kossi gets us like he normally does they will be in this 1 and perhaps cause an upset if we play in the manner we did last week (looking at our mids whilst saying this)
And if B.Frisk gets his out the back shitmin goals that he has a rich and proud history of....im quitting footy.

I think Pickett is too quick and nimble for Noah. Wilmott would be my preferred match up for him.

There is no way we took North lightly. They played a great game and we were soundly beaten in the midfield.

It's not only is he quik and nimble i can pretty much guarantee kossi will lay tackles that lead to holding the ball frees inside 50 leading to goals. That will lead to us dump kicking the ball outside our defensive 50 due to pressure which plays straight into Melbourne's strengths

Disagree on the bolded SL, not overtly but subconsciously I think we went in with a "we got this" mindset. You only have to be few percent off in attitude and any team can beat you, then you throw in the fact that every team will lift when playing the premiers.

We struggled in stages to put away the Tigers and Eagles as well.

Hopefully we are switched on from the start this Sunday and keep banking those Ws.

I think you under rate our club by that statement. There is no team in the competition that we take lightly.
