Agree with a lot of thisSo I had a choice of poking my eyes out, slamming my dick in a car door or rewatching a bit of the Roo's game... it was a toss up, they all offered nothing but pain, I turned the TV on...
Like plenty of others have said, Dizzy was questionable as the sub, Oscar was pantsed, the mids were trounced - it was a game that we'd like to pretend never happened.
But it does highlight some areas that are still our weaknesses. When Bez went down we lost a decent chunk of running and defensive work.
Our mids - especially when you have a Dunkley, Bailey, Washcroft rotation in the centre square is an incredibly one sided affair with only Dunks offering any real defensive pressure. To be honest I don't understand the line up at all - small bodies - Fletcher & Levi were coming in as well... North were harder, faster and more willing to tackle. It highlights how critical the loss of Lachies form is.
If Oscar is injured then rest him. Gawn has his number 9 times out of 10 - and it's usually a very one sided affair. We need to balance up the midfield and actually be prepared to body the Dees or Petraca and Oliver will demolish us. We can't stand Bailey and Wash against those 2 when both are effectively offensive players.
The other thing that stood out - apart from the serious lack of discipline which to me means the boys thought it would be a cakewalk and when it wasn't looked for anyone else to blame - was Zorko's turnovers. Holy... watching back he almost kicked to them as much as he kicked it to us. I'd go as far as saying it was a massive error of judgement to keep trying the risky kicks when in reality we should have been icing the game.
So I can't help but wonder if Kiddy is back sooner than we thought for a reason. But again the balance worries me. Niether Zork or Kiddy are terribly defensively minded... can we carry both?
For the same reason Gallop is in for me - he's got the rabid dog about him in the VFL and it could come in very handy.
Even though the Dee's forwards haven't been great we just can't afford to turn up with the same lack of intent that we did last week - especially through the middle. If we let them be fed by the centre often enough they'll eventually kick a winning score.
It's a bit of bellweather game this. If we actually get selections right and turn up with some determination I'll be happy. If we turn up like last week I'll start to entertain the hangover talk. The ladder flatters us frankly and I hope we know it.
It’s great to be 7-1-1 but it doesn’t mean it can’t get away from us
We can pull out our best like the ferocious attack on the suns
But we look borderline uninterested at times. I have no issue with a team going through the gears a bit but i thought the weekend was quite poor because we got the scare in the third, steadied somewhat, then just went through the motions. Only our goal kicking saved a 5 goal loss
Massive test pre bye too, a lot of tough road assignments.
Kiddy i do think has some good defensive attributes including being a good tackler
So is Zorks but he does play a long way from his man at times
We need Wilmot to be a bit more defensive with Kiddy back
Player we are missing more than anyone is Starce. Just stiffens us up back there and never plays at low intensity. Might sound crazy to say but he might be our hardest to replace in the whole side.
Oscar just shouldn’t play if he is struggling that much. Don’t understand this mc sometimes. Playing a ruck you plan to sub out is crazy!
And the mid mix is a big one. Dunks is your defensive mid. Clugga is balanced. The others are ball-hunters. Need to avoid getting the mix wrong
I think Levi is actually a bit more defensively minded than Will. Pretty hard and likes laying a tackle. Might be an option for the future
