Fages loyal to a fault to Darcy Gardiner, will he be sub again or McKenna?

Dizz in a negating role on Gawn is something that is best not to think about.

Oscar must be good to go. Hipwood to take 3 or 4 of the forward stoppages and Dunks a few around the ground.

Mids must know by now how to shark Gawn and the rest don't kick it to him when he's lurking down the line.

Put aside the Gawn question for a second - who is locking down on SHARP?

Dizzy plays 100% game time and locks down on all players at all times. Time to lock in Dizz.

No idea how Doedee missed seniors again
We knew we be playing Doedee this year I would rather see Lester forward then Dizzy sorry.
With Day out and against Gawn who we going to ruck Hippy or Charlie :(

After last week when we lost a small and had Dizzy as sub hope we do not rinse and repeat.

Looks like Doedee pulled up sore. First time he'd seen a lot of the ball in some time.

If we're prepared for Gawn to dominate the ruck then it's not a problem. Especially if Oscar can limit the expected dominance. Good challenge for the midfield who wont be too tired after last week.

That should be the focus for me. Plan around Gawn. Accept we will probably lose the tap and try and shark it. Then don't kick long down the line to him. Need have our kicking game on and changing angles and switching it to go around or over him

Unsure as to why we’re still going with Gardiner as a forward instead of rewarding strong VFL form from Gallop.
Gallop’s form was stronger earlier in the season than recently. He’s hard at it, so will get a chance sooner or later, but there’s also no rush, given how bigs typically develop. Logan Morris an exception. With the twos having a bye this week, it’s probably a good opportunity to rest him. It’s a long season. I think he’ll debut before the bye given current injuries.

Having not had a ‘pet’ last year, Fagan has clearly decided he needs one this year. Gardiner is the lucky player.

Fortunately his pet is an uncompromising hard nosed footballer who never says die..not bad for the team as the last man selected

I used to watch a lot of Freo games when Sandilands was in his prime. Not so much a threat around the ground but he was always dominant in the ruck. Most teams knew they were going to lose the hitouts and planned for it, often getting on top of the Freo midfield at stoppages and roving Sandilands taps. With Melbourne mids not in their best form, this is absolutely what our midfield should be doing.

This is pretty much it. Dizz is the kind of player coaches and teammates have a soft spot for. Extremely competitive, will always give 110%.
I’m sure Hippy will be the second ruck but if they threw that to Dizzy because we can’t risk Hippy getting injured in the ruck then we all know that he will fight tooth and nail at every contest.

I would have preferred to see Gallop debut, but with the VFL having a bye this week, maybe it is the right time to give a young body the rest.

I went to the Saints game and sat right behind the goals in what was Gardiner’s first game back. His defensive craft still look sound, helping out backs with checks, subtly cutting off forwards leading patterns etc. That made me think he can still be a very solid contributor when needed down there.

However, it’s clear that’s his strength. He has played there for years at AFL, played his junior football there, and looks comfortable. A forward, second ruck or flexible sub option he is not. I’ve always thought a runner should be sub, given they can cover the loss of a mid, flanker, or wing. That’s coverage for a range of roles, as opposed to a KP.

Gardiner, for mine, plays the Joyce role of last year I.e. coverage for when needed in the backline. He has been a great servant and team man, but so had Rich, and sometimes it’s a tough break that those guys can’t break in when the team is going well. He can still impact the team through training standards, what he brings to the culture etc. and wait for his shot should one open up.

McKenna is the ideal candidate to play sub, and looks far fitter than last year. He’d be my choice.

Unfortunately we don’t need a big slow defender.
Great player, fear his speed is a liability.
