Part of the issue is that the standard of VFL is so low compared to the AFL that guys like Kai get next to nothing from playing in the 2’s.

Agree with you on this but still he is a passenger today don't get me wrong I do rate him but this year he has not bothered to bring the effort i know he can provide

I'd disagree with that, Kai went full throttle to the point of injuring himself a couple of times already. Now its a very stop start season for him and needs time to rebuild form.

In hindsight, playing him straight after ankle injury could've been avoided. Considering the man relies on his springboard action and zip, any leg injury should've been given a longer recovery window. That second injury to torso was just unlucky when he went hard for the ball.
