AGREE and resting players may come and bite us like last year when we rested the whole team against saints and lions nearly beat cats, if it wasnt for that holding ball free not given in lions forward line and we would have lost chance for top 2. i know rest is history but be wary !!

You don't think the Cats knew they didn't need to win and dialed back the pressure?

This. Pretty sure we will be balls out and going hard for the next 2 months to cement a top 4. However, since the fat controller has cracked the sads about resting 10-12 players with "general soreness" nearing the end of the Home and away season we may rotate 4 or 5 players out over the final 1 or 2 rounds if we can afford that luxury.

The new rule does not prevent mass changes. Nor does it prevent resting players to manage player fatigue. In fact, despite the title of the article on AFL.om, the new rule specifically endorses Freo's tactics against St Kilda last year. It's unlikely we will be in the position to do so, but if we are, it is entirely possible that we could rest several players against Bribane in round 22.

'Rule 29, 'To Perform on One's Merits', now reads: "(It) means at all times to perform honestly and to the best of one’s ability in the pursuit only of legitimate competitive objectives.

"For the avoidance of doubt "legitimate competitive objective" includes the development of the team or players or management of player fatigue or injuries but does not include improving a club’s draft position, improving a club’s position with respect to a potential player exchange or manipulating a club’s position on the ladder for the purpose of improving its draw within the finals series." It's a sliding doors thing that's impossible to predict - perhaps without resting that many we wouldn't have beaten Geelong in the first week anyway, home or away.

In a couple of years time everyone will come to grips with the fact he is nothing more than a mediocre player who turns the ball over a lot in dangerous places. Don't see where the improvement is coming from.

I can't agree with this. He's much better than you're giving him credit for.

His disposal is not good at the moment but last year showed he is well up to AFL level. I would probably agree with dropping to work on his disposal but with the clear expectation he's back in the team PDQ.

I'm not gambling man but I'd be happy to put dollars on Sutty being a long term player with Freo and consistently performing to top level.

On OTC they showed the footage of our coast-to-coast effort on the weekend (which Barlow messed up by missing the shot at goal) and just like the Collingwood game Sutty was integral to the move. He was the one with the awareness and quick thinking to instantly loop a long attacking handball over the top to a running MJ which cut Geelong apart and opened up the whole field for us.

He's got a good footy brain on him and I think he's going to develop into a fine attacking backman for us.

That'll be the miss which saw Sheridan run from the back pocket to receive MJ's hand ball and tonk it 40 metres from the edge of the square to hit the logo on Barlow's jumper at forward pocket with Motlop in the slipstream cos he couldn't match Micky's smarts or pace.:D:D:D:D:D

Beautiful skills when under no pressure.

It was a celebration of all that is great about vanilla icecream!

Interestingly, Sutcliffe's DE% is 5 points up on last year. He is developing very nicely.

Thats a surprise. Looking at Saturdays game he fluffed a few kicks under no pressure yet I remember him being pretty good last year. Maybe his earlier games boosted his average. Other sitting beside me were saying the same thing about his disposal.

Either way, I think its something he needs to improve but I'm pretty confident he's got it in him to be very good.

Your take may be different but I'm going with what I was seeing at the game.

He has license to kick into the corridor so it's no surprise that when he stuffs up it ends very badly and everyone knows about it. No one really notices when he gets in right, but hopefully as he gets used to this role of his, he'll get it right more often than not, and people will realise that he is a major cog in the quick attack from defense game plan.

Few people do notice when a player gets it right on here it seems. So much focus on mistakes.

(Yes, I do see the irony here, but I do see Sheridan do plenty right, but I wouldn't get as many bites ;) ).

I agree with you. Except that I think his kicking has been good this year.

Just a few weeks ago, I said on here that he'd automatically lose his spot when Ibbo was fit. But IMO, Sutcliffe has improved significantly this year and will be very difficult to dislodge from the 22 if he can maintain current form. I also think he has what it takes to be very good.

I mentioned this on the Game Day forum last week; a simple hand ball that sets up the corridor run but the difference is he's got the balls to set it up like that. Before that corridor run I think it was Duffield (could be wrong) who swung it wide and turned over for a Geelong shot on goal.

I've said it before in another thread, for a third year player, he gets a hell of a lot of responsibility in a role that requires a lot of poise and a resilient temperament. Sutty showed himself to be a kind of player who has the confidence to take risks and back himself in.

And the truth is he's played every game this season (without checking the stats) whereas Croz, Sheridan, Suban, C. Pearce, De Boer and even Neale have been either dropped or starting sub; that's not because of good luck if he was in terrible form he'd have been replaced by Ibbotson by now.

I wonder with Ibbotson and Morabito so close to return if he's going to hold his spot...
