The general consensus is the umpires helped us win that.

What are people actually watching? The bias completely blinds them.
The umpires actually were completely incomprehensible to me.
At first I thought that they were favouring Adelaide big time. There were just so many cases of missed holding the balls that we weren't paid.
Then we got a few inexplicable frees.
We got a 50m penalty that in normal times we could never have expected.
I then started subscribing to the idea that in fact the frees were actually being played out in a lottery, randomly distributed in a statistical experiment. It was completely unpredictable as to who would get the free and why.

Ned Long getting plenty of press.

I've got a great feeling about this young man. I get the feeling he is an iron man, Jack Crisp like.

Feel like they'll throw stuff at him, but he'll keep going.

Just love how he plays.

It is pretty amazing how tough our draw has been compared to the average.

Of the current top 8, the number of games each has played against the bottom 6 teams as of this round are

Collingwood - 1

Brisbane - 5

Gold Coast - 4

Hawthorn - 4

Adelaide - 3

Bulldogs - 3

Geelong - 3

GWS - 3

We really have the capacity to put a gap on the chasing pack in these next rounds if we hold our nerve.

This is a real test, we have had a tendency to drop games against strugglers, but if we keep our effort up we should be able to really put points on the board.
Love these posts with meaningful stats.

From our game and the others I have seen so far this weekend, the umpires have clearly been working on the high tackle rule. They have now decided that any high tackle is a free kick, as the rules mandate. The professional duckers and kneebenders are getting a free run, but the high tackle has to be reduced to a minimum. The AFL now have to deal with them, not by allowing high tackles on some players, as they did initially with Ginnivan, but by fining and then suspending those players that repeatedly cheat the system. It is bringing the game into disrepute. We got a poor run with these decisions this week, but I believe that the umpiring group have to persist with paying these. Post match penalties are the way to deal with it.

So you are thinking that the duckers and cheats will be rewarded on the field, but then suspended subsequently when their actions are reviewed in slow motion by the tribunal?
I could live with that.

They might gain an immediate reward in real time, but the fear of suspension would very soon make itself felt.
Would be a consistent way for stamping it out.

But it has to happen.
Because if it doesn't, many of the high calls in our game were just ridiculous.

It's a slightly flawed stat though, Carlton were also a bottom 3 team after we played them, mostly because we put them there.
I think its a pretty good stat, because it is based on the current standings, which provides the greatest amount of data we have.
There is no more accurate reflection of the teams' rankings than the ladder as it stands, because it is based on all data available.

You missed the joke obviously.

So we’ve played one bottom six side so far and the Lions have played five. That’s pretty much what I thought it would be.We have had an absolutely brutal draw so far, with the AFL setting so many booby traps for us along the way. It’s quite remarkable that we’re currently sitting 8 and two after such an incredibly tough run of games.

The Crisp handball for the WHE goal in the 1st quarter was a thing of beauty.
While he did get some praise for his effort from the commentators, just imagine the superlatives that would have flowed if Nick or Isak had pulled it off.

Crispy still under appreciated to this day.

Really important win.

The game had a pretty weird vibe to it though. Felt very quiet and a little subdued, maybe because both teams play styles null each other. Players singing the club song after the game seemed lacking energy a bit too, maybe because the kids were around?

Great game by Frampton, Jaicos, Howe, Perryman and many others. Ed Allan seemed a lot better than previous weeks, getting involved. Houston had a much better game than previous as well. Maynard looked ecstatic with the win, happy he could captain today and deserves it.

The Nick tags are getting pretty ridiculous, he's getting injured and frustrated. Glad we won it
I think it’s a sign that the the jobs done onto next week. I expect it won’t be until the finals that they sing hard.

Sliding doors moment, Reef didn’t get injured. Where would we be right now?

The club was backing him in over Frampton. This forced decision may have been for the betterment of the club. We’ll never know.
I think if Reef continues his form he would have got dropped for Frampton eventually.

Plus Frampton would have gotten into the side off the back Howe being rested or Moore’s injury/rest.

He’s a f-wit with an agenda against us like his mate Hodge, but in that example I feel like there’s a gap in the rules or their interpretation. I like the common sense interpretation that landed us the free but technically the Adelaide defender purposely waited til last second to actually put his hands on the ball to avoid being deemed to have prior so an ump could use that to justify the call the other way.
Perhaps there is, but I find the interpretation is usually pretty consistent with the umps calling holding the ball there.

Adelaide were 7.2 at one point yet all I'm seeing is "Adelaide didnt take their chances"

Why? Just because Rankine kicked two on the full from frees he should never have had?

Who gives a shit?

Even Nicks had the nous to point out that we missed plenty of easy shots too. In fact, it was really only us missing easy shots across all four quarters.

The players weren't told of the death of Adam Selwood until they returned to the rooms after the game so they had probably just found out before they sang the song.

Didn’t you know we never win a game unless the opposition lose it

Frampton has the added advantage over reef in that he’s much taller which for players like Thilthorpe is vital
Reef hopefully gets back in the team at some stage as another option back

One thing I didn't mention on the weekend that I found really strange

I've watched plenty of Adelaide and they've always played fair and have been a really good side.

Which made it really really bizarre to me to see all their players ducking into every tackle that came their way and even more infuriating was the umpires falling for it and paying 7 of them.

Hoskin-Elliott's goal at the end was the moment I just assumed it was instructed at a coaching level. When the Crows player held his head "in pain" despite being tackled around the waist.

It really stood out because they never normally do that like Geelong, Hawthorn, Carlton and Brisbane do.

He mentions the "injury" factor later on too

He's doing nothing more than waiting for our next loss (probably Hawthorn) so he can chime in with "SEE I TOLD YOU THEY'RE OLD AND SLOW" lol
