The afternoon after the night before, the Hawks travel deep into enemy territory to take on the Bombers in a game that shapes as a must-win for the Hawks in order to put their premiership defence back on track. Having had the bye last weekend, the Hawks currently sit ninth on the VFL ladder, a half-game outside the top eight and six points out of the top four. Their opponent this weekend, Essendon, currently sit third on the ladder, a half-game clear of Footscray in fifth position, so they'll be primed to defeat the Hawks on their own patch.

As noted, the Hawks had the weekend off, while Essendon also had their feet up over the long weekend. In round 9, the Bombers enjoyed a comfortable 41 point victory over the Northern Blues (12.12.84 to 6.7.43), with the goals spread around (three to Ham, two each to Houlahan, Sibbald and Myers, and singles to Dixon, Heppell and Younan). The Hawks also took winning form into the bye, with a 21 point victory over Williamstown at Box Hill City Oval, with goals to Moore (2), Miles (2), Ross (2), Howe, Walker, Adduci and Maloney.

And congratulations to former Box Hill Hawk, Anthony Brolic (who now calls Rowville in the EFL home), who was named ruck-rover in the AFL Victoria Metro Under-25 team that played Tasmania State League U-25 last Sunday in Launceston. Unfortunately for Brolic, the Tasmanians were too strong, winning 15.13.103 to 10.7.67.

Teams to come.

Should be a good game, our VFL games are always tight no matter where each of us is on the ladder. Looking over your side, I'm guessing either Nash or Mullenger-McHugh will play defence given you have Schoenmakers back there with Mirra probably the next most likely to take a key forward?

Seriously time to look at:

Teia Miles, Oliver Hanrahan, Harry Morrison

Mitchell Lewis, Conor Nash Daniel Howe

for senior selection. Hope they all have a good game.
Miles is not part of the future. He will be delisted at the end of the year. If the rumour about Hugh Greenwood is true, then Howe’s future at Hawthorn is far from certain given the fact that despite all these injuries this year he still hasn’t played much games and that would be a major concern.

I kind of liked Miles, when he played. Think we could do worse than giving him another chance. You never know...

Wouldn't mind seeing Miles given a chance at senior level. The remainder of this year is all about sorting out the list I would have thought. He can play at both ends of the ground and brings some creativity.

Ross has two, Nash & Boucher with singles. Just tuned in so can’t comment on how prominent players are.
