Autopsy Round 11, 2022: Gold Coast toast Hawks

Dirty night at the office, looked off at the start and never got into the contest.
Thought our lack of competing was poor from the get go.

If your midfield is weak and you dont have a ruck you will struggle , teams that get away with the pinch hitter ruck have strong deep midfields . We do not.
No excuse but its reality.
That was always going to be trouble especially against Witts and co.
Need Reeves/Lynch back asap.

Butler will be a gun for us . We are almost at a stage where if Mitchell gets around 30 we are having a poor game .

We need our own Rowell/Anderson/Miller combo. We have one ticked off ( Newcombe ) with hopefully a few more to come.
Think GC are underrated , in good form and played a great game to the conditions last night.

Onwards to next week , hopefully on the up track on the rollercoaster.

With all the rain in QLD over the past months, the Suns were always going to deal with the humidity much better than a Victorian side.
When has it been humid up here with all the rain we've had? Take from someone who grew up down south, it's been very much a wet "traditional" winter this past month with cool days and nights.

I also spent 2 years in Darwin before moving here. Trust me going from this weather up here to Darwin would be just as much as a shock for the Suns players as us.

They wanted it more and were prepared to work for it. Getting sick and tired of everyone writing it off as the weather.

Blaming the umpires though for that loss is even worse.
I don't think anyone is blaming the umpires for the loss. Not sure where you are getting that from.

There do seem to be quite a lot of references to 'umpiring'
Normally seems to be a spike after a loss too to be honest

Was so hard to force myself to watch the last qtr until the siren. Harder than even watching that poor fool Howe trying to ruck against a giant after being thrown into the wolves den. Felt like a 1hr qtr. I was more interested in watching Uncle Buck on GO channel. No positives tonight except Lewis Mitchell. I thought he tried against the flow. 😡

Seemed like we just weren’t prepared for the conditions. Hope we don’t have to play up there again any time soon.

As bad as the umpiring was, we were worse.

But my mantra for this year is that things are never as good or as bad as they seem. We’ll have a few more games like this as we develop and we’ll have a few more like the game last week against the Lions.

Positives for me last night were CMac, DGB, Sicily and Butler.

Missed the game was at the soccer …… double whammy for me 😩 and wasn’t to keen to watch the replay when I got home but the single malt whiskey or two was nice 😄. Watching Sammy in the presser said we didn’t handle the conditions well but that’s no excuse. Our tackling was down and got smashed in contested possession. Then when we did have it we were trying to be to cute and not going/moving it longer. Metres gained was poor. Sounded like the ruck situation played a big part in the result. Using players from roles that they normally play caused other underlying issues and then trying to plug gaps/holes by switching others around just never worked. Even if we had Reeves/Lynch it would have been a challenge to handle a quality ruckman in Witts. Must have been a hard week and night for the coaches trying to manage. Nice to hear that DGB, Butler and Macca did some nice things.

Every Hawk person down a bit for 24 hours after a bad loss …….. now it’s time to move on to next week I say!

Yes but is anyone actually blaming the umpires directly for the loss as suggested? I don't believe so.

The level of umpring at the moment is atrocious and on a night when nothing seems to be going right the last thing you need is the umpiring sticking the boot in and adding to that frustration. It's only natural to want to vent about some incredibly poor decisions/non-descisions occuring in the game which only seem to compound the loss.

The shinning light last night was Sam Butler. Can't wait to watch him progressing. DGB also good despite all the free kicks against him.

I like Morrison game as well, I vote him for the MVP this week. Jai will need to ask Sam Mitchell how to handle taggers. I'm seriously praying that Reeves is ready next week. Hopefully Jaeger is fit to play as well.

Every time I was frustrated with Impey, He's on a scoring chain resulting in a goal. But still frustrate me.

I hope the club take notes on how to better prepare the game to suit conditions.

Same for me Matey. Out for dinner and had both games ready for replay when I got home - what a disaster! Sometimes I think you just have to write games off and move on. We had absolutely no chance without a ruckman and don’t know if we could have expected much better in hindsight

I didn't watch it on Fox, so I missed that footage, but I think you're going to be disappointed if you're expecting Mitchell to be the guy laying tackles in transition. He's a stoppage specialist, and once we've lost the stoppage and the ball is in transition , he's never going to be the guy intercepting the opposition outside runners and laying a tackle on them. It is very difficult to cope with losing the hitouts 40 to 8. You either put more guys inside to try and counter the tap dominance, and risk getting even more burnt on transition when you do lose the clearance, or you just get smashed up front in clearances. Seems we largely went with option 1.

I’m not expecting him to lay tackles in transition at all. Just pick someone up, and dont let your direct opponent do as he pleases when we don’t have the ball.

I do agree that this game is probably one we can just scrap and not read to much into, especially in the midfield, due to having no ruck etc.

We get murdered by teams that hold outside the contest and back themselves to win the contest and get it out.
Saints twice over last couple of years, Suns last night, second half V Essendon.
We’re a see ball get ball team, and regularly get multiple blokes attracted to contests when it’s not needed leaving loose players out.
Suns we’re quicker, used the footy better and generally had ever bounce, ricochet and decision go their way. But these things happen when you’re on top in the game.

Our defence got exposed by dropping off their opponents, midfield out-gunned and forwards need to realise you can play in front, especially in conditions where the ball won’t be coming in perfect.

But, this is the joys of a rebuilding team. We’ll have good days and s**t days. Last week was good, not so much this week.

We move on

Finding it very hard to find a positive tonight.

Sicily was ok after being poor early.
Scrimmers when on early tried really hard…
Morrison with some cheapies out on the wing during the night kept running up and back .

Anything else I missed?

You missed Dan Howe in the ruck. Who woulda thunk that could be a thing!

Thought Cmac had some nice moments in the last in the middle.

He is clean and one touch. Something we sorely lacked.

Very early days for him. Great skills but his defensive side and second efforts are a work in progress. Looks composed and creative in traffic. We have a player to work with!

Another one of those rebuilding losses we should be expecting this season.
It wasn't pleasant viewing but I've been far more disappointed by other losses this season than that one.
Yes certainly was better than the saints loss. Thought it was more GC playing very well and we weren’t able to match them compared to saints where we kept gifting them the ball

I flew in and out to Darwin from Melbourne to watch the game yesterday and it was a woeful effort by the Hawks. The Suns came out firing. They moved the ball fast and every time they marked or hand balled they stuck.
We kept kicking the ball overhead into the forward line, hoping one of the forwards would mark it, only to be out marked. So many turn overs. Frustrating to watch.
Sad they didn’t play better yesterday but still had a great time hanging out in Darwin.

Very good analysis of the problem at the contest. Unfortunately only have 1 contested beast in Jai and no one else who can win the footy on the deck with strength. Last night made worse because Jai was tagged (shows just how good he is).

Defense had a shocker as well.

GCS should have won that game and should be in the top 6 with the amount of talent and mature bodies they have. It is a disgrace they aren't there,

This.

Read less than nothing into that abomination.
The heat and humidity absolutely slaughtered us.

Playing games in the tropics makes for unwatchable shitshows
I was there and at ground level, I was watching the game, not moving and sweating buckets. So it probably did play a factor and Gold Coast handled it eat better.

A few comments suggesting Morrison was good last night.

I thought he was poor - but most of the team was.

He got an absolute bath on the wing from Ellis and then was moved to HB in the second half where he picked up some possessions linking up which was good. But every kick forward was a loopy bomb to an outnumbered forward line when this is exactly the type of kick that we have been trying to eradicate this year after years of madness. Clearly we want a pinpoint kick to around CHF to open things up.
