No he’s not. He’s nowhere near it.
He may still be in the future, but we have no one now who’ll take the team on his shoulders and go. Not even Steele unfortunately.

It's a bit ridiculous for you to give that status to Harley Ried but not to our players who have done it multiple times over their career.

Harley is super impressive and will do it frequently over his career. But it's very 'woe is us' to pretend like we dont have anyone who has won games off their own boot or effort running around.

You could put them all together though, and Harley will likely have gone past that total by season's end.

I doubt he'll even bother stiff arming our blokes as he traipses on by.

You misunderstood, it wasn’t me, and there is no “woe is us”. it was a very good discussion King and Cornes were having on the radio.

And they are talking about NOW.
Not Harvey. not Hayes, Not Riewoldt.

And they are talking about consistently. Not an occasional out the box performance.
Like Dangerfield, Dusty, Cripps, Rozee, Heeney, Petracca, Gawn, Toby Greene.
Come on, who compares in our team today or the last year or so?

They mentioned Reid, who has done it immediately. Yes, it’s early, but you can see he’s going to be their man.

Still early in their careers of course, but I guess our hopes for that breakthrough player in the near term rest with Chito, Nas, Windy, Wilson and Pou. If we're lucky enough a couple of those come on as we hope, throw an LDU or someone in the mix and Max then hits his straps up forward...

His last game off HBF vs the Swans was just something else. Him and Hannas (last game) our two best players.
Hahaha. Have I got this right or are the mushies coming on now ?
By role I meant how Ratten wanted him to play the game and work as a team etc.

Just putting your name magnet on a HBF or HFF position is not sufficient.

PS. Note that I am not saying that we should have kept Long, I am just sharing why Long himself wanted to go.

Owens would be tearing it up already if he'd been used as a mid from the start.

I'd like to see a lot more from our 4DP Marquee forward to be honest, thought it was sickening him getting pats on the back for bringing "effort" to a game after 10 rounds of footy. Just shows how mentally fragile he is that he needs pumping up so he brings effort.
You're both right.
Effort is the minimum of expectation...and there's zero excuse for him not to be bringing that week in, week out (injury not withstanding) but yes, lets pat him in the back, sing praise and give thanks, as well as have several media comments from the coach for finally reaching those minimum requirements.
And yes, agree...we should all be expecting more than the minimum and occasional cameo performance.

This year Marshall has been huge , last couple years before that it was Sinclair and a couple before that Steele.
You may have a star but it doesn't mean you have a top team - Cripps has been good for years but Carlton have only come good now and he will be 30 next year , Suns had Ablett and it didn't really achieve much.
Just look at how many superstars GWS have had and been gifted and they have not won a flag.

If we only had one midfielder that was killing it we would be a totally different side - getting your hands on the ball first and pumping it forward changes everything as well as the forward line.

Nah - they gave him a 4 x $500K contract that offered him security and we weren't going near that offer.
Isn’t that interesting?? Well IMO it should be interesting to anyone interested in the ecology of the AFL and trade.

Because what team could offer four years to a player with that profile?

It seems to me, only the ten-headed- monster-Frankenstein- come- team like Gold Coast (artificially sweetened by the AFL) could afford to do that. A regular battling club could not and would not entertain that.

He's tracking so much like Daniher. Hope, disappointment, injury, anger....then he left and went somewhere with no pressure and made himself a career.

I sometime wonder if he would be better off at GC and we swap him for Luko and a mid or something. They get the bros together in a low stress environment and we get a couple of good pieces to set ourselves up. Hammer can develop into a power forward. Luko as a lead up running forward like Rooey.

I think the same thing with King, he's got midfield bull written all over him.

But seriously Owens was never going to be a midfielder, was recruited to be a forward.

Apropos of absolutely nothing at all…
Why is the Sir Doug Nicholls round, actually two rounds?
Have I missed something?

One for the title, one for the name, next year they'll have one for the suburb of Fitzroy, year after that, the Roys entity, after that the VFL and in the end we'll have half the season as "Sir Doug Nicholls appreciation" with the other half being "gather time" so the AFL can scrooge mcduck it.

Yes, let's pretend like dual AA Jack Sinclair hasn't been a match winner for us over the past 12. Or that Marshall performances haven't been huge. Or even Steele before injury hit

Feels like it will be a tough watch. Melbourne's mids will work their way on top at some stage; mostly I'm looking for signs of development from young players. Windy has been putting up good numbers, really hoping he can use this year as a springboard to become a gun player. It's only his third year so there are very good signs.

Windy is going a bit under the radar due to the teams overall performance. He is doing well. By no means a breakout season...but consistently doing the work, and progressing.
I think he'll be one of those guys that in three or four years, a lot of people will be "surprised" at how good he has become.
People will notice more, when we are noticeably better.

His numbers compare really well to a lot of top mids at the same age. He seems to struggle to impact consistently for four quarters, that's his next step but I'm confident he'll be an important part of our midfield for the next decade.

Think he has leadership potential too. Not yet of course, but once - as you rightfully say - he can run out games, he's the type that won't lay down and allow himself to be beaten.
I think he's someone that others will fight for and with.
Exactly what we need
