First half could (should?) have been in front. Completely let go of the rope in the third term. Fourth term all a much of a muchness, damage done.
Positives
• You can see the game style starting to build. The early goal (might have been Hough’s?) that started with Hewett taking the extra territory and going by hand, rather than kicking it even with the time to, will be teaching tape for how exactly it should look. Compare where we are now game style wise to where we were in the opening month, and also look at who is doing the doing. It’s turning.
• Hewett, Brockman, Harley midfield mix is lots of fun. Brockman’s pressure was great today. A step back for Hough but if they’re serious about developing him there you’ll have some of those
• Brock coming along nicely.
• Waterman and Allen both did lots with very little. Waterman in particular, two phenomenal pressure relieving marks out of D50 at vital times when the game was still hot.
Negatives
• Third quarter was so ugly. Classic old school just letting it all go to waste sort of term for us. Crows at home uniquely poised to relish that too. A shame.
• Connection inside 50 is absolutely shocking and costs us goals both in ones we leave out there, and how many coast to coasts it sets up. The single biggest game changing improvement we can make is just finding a teammate inside 50 (or missing a shot so we can set the defence). Live ball turnovers after we’ve run in a big wave is a killer.
• Injuries could be brutal. It was nice to see Jake Waterman while we could, now that his career is over
• Quiet games from Gross, Long, and Hutch.
• Ryan’s been one of our best this year but to come away from that without a goal is mind boggling.
• Flynn and Bailey invisible, and a touch up in the ruck. I think we persist with two rucks but can’t afford them to both be such a non factor if we do.
Cats will be a tough one, but keep showing signs and once that final connection comes we will be up to those type of games for much much longer.
