Things started pretty well for us this season.

We belted the Bulldogs, and Grundy had one of his best games.

First game back after the long break and both the Pies and the Tigers just didn't look match fit at all. Just a really flat game, but no worrying signs really. No other side looked particularly good in Round 2.

Then the next week we absolutely pantsed a St Kilda side who had just dominated the Bulldogs in Round 2. I remember talking to the old man after the game and saying how good it feels to have pretty much a full strength side at the moment with Treloar due back any time. Our defence looked like just about the best in the whole comp. Howe was in career best form. A few players were down on form, but otherwise everything was looking good ahead for the Pies.... then Sidebottom gets a club suspension for 4 weeks for some absolutely foolish and immature behavior. Before we can even get to the next week the wheels already start to fall off...

Then came the game against GWS. On the positive side this was the first time I remember the big forwards not all kicking bags on us. In fact, I think they only had 2 or 3 goals between all of Cameron, Finlayson and Himmelberg. However they were without Kelly, Taranto or Toby Green, but their young players really stepped up. I remember that Tom Green debuting and having an absolute blinder last quarter to get them over the line. Then of course we have the first major injury toll of the year with Howe going down with a nasty leg injury in the 4th qtr. Only our 3rd game in for the season and the injury bullshit that's plagued us for the better part of a decade has already reared it's ugly head.

Then came the absolute disaster of a game against the Bombers next week. I'm pretty sure they were without Heppell and Merrett. Stringer kicks 3 goals, De Goey kicks zero. Hurley and Hooker are in the twilight of their careers yet dominated Cox and Mihocek. We made Laverde and Langford look like superstars. An absolutely embarrassing loss.

Next week we beat a seriously undermanned Hawthorn side. A pretty lousy game with really only the impressive debut of Atu and the return of Quaynor to the senior side as the major positives. Only other thing I remember is Kelly (who also made an impressive debut) injuring his elbow in the last 5 mins of the game.

In probably our next best performance of the year (and sadly our last) we quite convincingly beat Geelong. Although in fairness they were without Mitch Duncan, and Selwood got injured very early into the game. De Goey finally extracted the digit, and after weeks of being horribly out of form came back and kicked 5 goals. It appears we're back on track.....only after the game we hear De Goey has apparently injured his finger and will be out for 4+ weeks....

Next week we move to the Perth hub and Pendles is injured in the warmup. We get absolutely demolished by West Coast. Josh Kennedy on his last legs boots 7 goals on Moore and Roughy. We get butchered in the midfield by Schuey, Kelly, Yeo and Gaff.

Next week we're beaten by bottom 4 side Fremantle. Brayshaw in only his 3rd year, a 35 year old Mundy, Matt f'ing Taberner and a bunch of teenagers handed us our asses. Their pressure was relentless and caused us to turn the ball over time and time again. We briefly wrestled back the momentum a few times, but they were really in control for the vast majority of the game. Fyfe spent most of the game forward and only kicked the 1 goal. 3 horrendous losses now. We went from a side well in the 8 to a middle of the road side very quickly.

Then just last week we had the atrocious Sydney game where we couldn't hit the wide side of a barn. Horribly inaccurate all game. Lucky we were up against an atrocious Sydney side with no Buddy Franklin in the side. If not for Daic's brililant goal to get us over the line there'd really be nothing positive to take out of that game. Just about everyone by this point is now down on form besides Maynard, Daicos and Quaynor....... who had his shin ripped wide open by metal studs and will now be on the sidelines for 5+ weeks. Quaynor was one of the few bright spots for us this season. He'd greatly improved from last year. Now we'll be lucky if he's back for finals, that is if we even make finals.

Oh, and we can now also add Treloar, Elliot and WHE to the injury list. Not to mention Grundy, who's looked cooked since the West Coast game, still not being rested. Good times.

That brings us to tonight in which we fielded perhaps our worst side in many years. A side that would've been down by 4-5 goals by halftime against ANY other side in the comp. Thanks to Maynard, Crisp, Daicos, and a pretty good rub of the green we managed to come out in the 2nd half and finally play some decent footy. Our accuracy on goal had improved, but the scoreboard didn't register the 3 shots at goal that missed by a country mile. The likes of Thomas, Phillips, Mayne, Varcoe, Madgen, C.Brown, Wills, Mihocek and Stevenson on current form wouldn't get a game at any other club.

One can say I'm being all doom and gloom, especially after 2 wins, but really.... what positives can one really take out of our last 3 games? Is anyone on our injured list due back any time soon? Do any of the 7-8 players horribly out of form look even remotely like turning things around any time soon? The positives at the moment are few and far between. Take Maynard, Crisp and Daicos out of this side and what would we be left with? The only real positive at this point is that things probably can't get much worse than this. Even if things improve, we gradually get players back and somehow make finals, who see us competing with sides like West Coast, Richmond, St Kilda, Geelong, Brisbane and GWS? I don't even fancy our chances against sides like the Bulldogs and Gold Coast at this point.

Injuries aside, we still lack class in the midfield, genuine key forwards and our gameplan is absolute bollocks. This side is in need of a major overhaul at the end of the season;

Dunn, Mayne, Reid, Greenwood and Varcoe all need to retire.
Thomas, Phillips and Hoskin-Elliot should be traded.
Madgen, Cox, Broomhead and Scharenberg should be delisted.
Wills and Sier only stay as depth. With a full strength midfield they shouldn't be getting a game.

Shocking first half, but very good in the second. Just need to take that second half into the Melbourne game on Saturday.
We just need to win at this stage, until we get a few regulars back.
Liked Cameron tonight. Very good at the contested mark and kicking a couple of goals shows his versatility. Keep Ruscoe in, love his vibe, and he keeps kicking goals. Thought Sier was lazy in the first half, but picked up nicely in the second, and Adams was very good tonight, particularly in the 3rd quarter.....

After a diabolical half of footy, Collingwood responded emphatically in the second half to prevail by 4 goals (24 points). The Magpies were finally able to convert forward entries into goals, which was a focus heading into the game, and was executed brilliantly over the last two quarters to not only reclaim control by getting in front, they also claimed the points after they appeared to be out of reach after the first two quarters. The response from the players to correct their errors was very significant, which allowed the team to take charge of the contest and ultimately build a lead on the scoreboard that the Magpies would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.

Collingwood had gains from disposals by +47 (324 - 277), kicks were +27 (185 - 158), handballs were won by +20 (139 - 119), while uncontested possessions had a margin of +50 (214 - 164), and tackles were won by +8 (60 - 52), with a differential of +2 for Tackles Inside 50 (8 - 6). Hit-outs were won by +1 (28 - 27), centre clearances were +4 (9 - 5), +3 for clearances (32 - 29), marks had a differential of +5 (77 - 72), with uncontested marks won by +9 (68 - 59). Inside 50's went Collingwood's way by +12 (42 - 30), with Marks Inside 50 won by +6 (11 - 5). Adelaide got their advantages from contested possessions by +5 (113 - 108), stoppage clearances were +1 (24 - 23), +7 for intercept possessions (61 - 54), and Contested Marks had a differential of +4 (13 - 9).

Taylor Adams (27 disposals @ 56%, 432 metres gained, 16 contested possessions, 11 uncontested possessions, 2 intercept possessions, 16 kicks, 11 handballs, 2 marks, 6 tackles, 3 score involvements, 10 clearances, 4 centre clearances, 6 stoppage clearances, 5 Inside 50s & 2 Rebound 50s) continued his strong run of form with his contested ball work in the packs standing out like a beacon. Generated movement from within packs on numerous occasions to not only avert threats from the Crows, he was able to provide territory in the forward arc as well.

Tom Phillips (22 disposals @ 64%, 420 metres gained, 8 contested possessions, 14 uncontested possessions, 4 intercept possessions, 15 kicks, 7 handballs, 6 marks & 2 Inside 50s) contributed with his marking and kicking traits, yet he didn't generate enough forays ahead of the ball. Ball use can be better, Tom.

Steele Sidebottom (22 disposals @ 64%, 296 metres gained, 8 contested possessions, 14 uncontested possessions, 4 intercept possessions, 13 kicks, 9 handballs, 3 clearances, 2 stoppage clearances, 7 Inside 50s & 2 Rebound 50s) had a quiet first half, before lifting with a strong second half, mirroring that performance of his team as the game progressed and eventuated.

Rupert Wills (20 disposals @ 85%, 6 contested possessions, 14 uncontested possessions, 3 intercept possessions,5 kicks, 15 handballs, 6 tackles, 2 score involvements & 2 Rebound 50s) applied tackling pressure, and dished off a lot of handpasses to teammates who could kick the ball. Next step for Wills, is to get kicks away from clearances, otherwise he'll be sticking to his limitations.

Brayden Sier (16 disposals @ 75%, 143 metres gained, 6 contested possessions, 10 uncontested possessions, 3 kicks, 13 handballs, 5 tackles, 4 score involvements, 5 clearances, 3 centre clearances & 2 stoppage clearances) won the ball in the clinches, and did a bit more damage than Rupert Wills to impact the scoreboard. Both of them need to find more kicks, which would allow the side to score more goals.

Josh Daicos (15 disposals @ 93%, 126 metres gained, 3 contested possessions, 12 uncontested possessions, 3 intercept possessions, 5 kicks, 10 handballs, 5 marks, 2 score involvements & 1 goal) made an impact early with a crucial goal, before getting closed down after that. The Crows did not allow him to kick the ball very often despite taking 5 marks.

Jack Crisp (22 disposals @ 77%, 459 metres gained, 3 contested possessions, 19 uncontested possessions, 5 intercept possessions, 17 kicks, 5 handballs, 4 marks, 3 tackles, 2 goal assists, 4 score involvements, 3 clearances, 3 stoppage clearances, 6 Inside 50s & 2 Rebound 50s) had an excellent second half with a host of piercing kicks in the last quarter to forwards that resulted in three shots at goal, with 2 goals converted. This was Crisp's most clinical game in almost two months.

Brayden Maynard (21 disposals @ 81%, 420 metres gained, 2 contested possessions, 19 uncontested possessions, 6 intercept possessions, 17 kicks, 4 handballs, 7 marks, 4 tackles & 5 Rebound 50s) demonstrated his ability to penetrate kicks from defence which gave the side enormous confidence whenever he won the ball.

John Noble (20 disposals @ 95%, 332 metres gained, 3 contested possessions, 17 uncontested possessions, 3 intercept possessions, 11 kicks, 9 handballs, 3 marks, 2 Inside 50s & 3 Rebound 50s) provided plenty of dash off half-back, with his speed allowing him time and space to deliver the ball effectively and properly.

Jack Madgen (13 disposals @ 85%, 103 metres gained, 3 contested possessions, 10 uncontested possessions, 5 intercept possessions, 8 kicks, 5 handballs, 6 marks, 2 tackles & 3 Rebound 50s) had a solid game in totality. A little bit shaky in the first half, before an improved second half saw him play his role with aplomb.

Lynden Dunn (10 disposals @ 90%, 194 metres gained, 9 uncontested possessions, 7 kicks, 3 handballs, 4 marks, 2 tackles, 2 Rebound 50s & 1 goal) made a successful return to AFL level by getting through the entire game unscathed, and kicked a very important goal against the run of play in the second term which lifted the whole side.

Callum Brown (17 disposals @ 59%, 212 metres gained, 8 contested possessions, 9 uncontested possessions, 4 intercept possessions, 10 kicks, 7 handballs, 2 marks, 2 tackles, 5 score involvements & 3 Inside 50s) did not kick any goals, but he worked exceptionally hard across half-forward to be involved in the contest. Looked to kick the ball a bit more in this game compared to recent games during the season thus far.

Darcy Cameron (15 disposals @ 60%, 181 metres gained, 9 contested possessions, 6 uncontested possessions, 4 hit-outs, 12 kicks, 3 handballs, 9 marks, 5 Contested Marks, 4 Marks Inside 50, 3 score involvements, 2 clearances, 2 stoppage clearances, 2 Inside 50s & 2 goals) recovered from an appalling start to compile a strong half of footy where he kicked 2 goals (1 each in the 3rd & 4th terms), in what was his best performance for the club to date.

Josh Thomas (14 disposals @ 71%, 156 metres gained, 5 contested possessions, 9 uncontested possessions, 9 kicks, 5 handballs, 6 marks, 2 score involvements, 3 clearances, 3 stoppage clearances, 2 Inside 50s & 1 goal) had a solid game without playing brilliantly. Stood up in the final term with a decisive goal to restore the team's 17-point lead after the Crows got to within 11 points. Once he kicked that goal, all of the momentum for Adelaide would diminish and vanish into the night without the points.

Brody Mihocek (13 disposals @ 77%, 144 metres gained, 7 contested possessions, 6 uncontested possessions, 7 kicks, 6 handballs, 5 marks, 2 Marks Inside 50, 4 tackles, 3 Tackles Inside 50, 3 score involvements & 1 goal) picked up his game as the game went longer to provide a target alongside Darcy Cameron.

Trey Ruscoe (6 disposals @ 50%, 146 metres gained, 5 uncontested possessions, 6 kicks, 3 marks, 2 tackles, 3 score involvements & 2 goals) backed up his debut game with 3 shots for 2 goals. His previous game included his first goal, before kicking 3 behinds. This time, he was considerably better on the scoreboard, despite fumbling a loose ball in the goal square which he would recover to convert over the line. His third term was electrifying.

Jaidyn Stephenson (4 disposals @ 100%, 2 contested possessions, 2 uncontested possessions, 2 intercept possessions, 3 kicks, 3 score involvements & 2 goals) gave his side momentum with two crucial goals in the third term. Stephenson was able to make the Crows pay with his intercepts resulting in majors.

Collingwood's next game will be against Melbourne on August 15 at the Gabba. Execute the game plan for four quarters against the Demons to leave them with demons in their heads!

mostly agree with your season review, feel like Cox will request a trade and we will get a 4th rounder for him. He still has value as pure ruck IMO.

I think Madgen will be kept on, he has some attributes that need work but I think he is viewed as a reasonable role player/injury coverage.

Thomas, Philipps and Hos, well I’ve got a soft spot for them all... they can all produce much better than we are seeing so there’s risk we sell at the bottom of the market... They will be retained unless another club comes knocking.

I feel Josh Thomas isn’t enjoying football. Barely got excited after a great goal.
Yeah I thought that too. Got quite annoyed at himself at one point too when his man took an intercept mark because he misread the play.

The senior players real lead from the front tonight, embarrassingly so. Adams, Steele, Grundy more often than not at the bottom of the pack scrapping for it. Sier is lazy, doesn’t want it enough, Wills is useless really. Adams for me had an enormous game, has been carrying a massive lid under tough circumstances, he was very impressive tonight. Steele was classy and Maynard and Crisp were outstanding also.

I thought Broomhead in particular was good tonight given the lack of match practice, everything he did was with purpose...clean with disposal and he attacked the ball and applied pressure. I’d leave him in and hope that he finds his place and the ball a bit more.

I can’t even imagine how much the game has changed since he last played, especially given the current situation and the immense pressure around the ball.

Stevo not even singing the song.

I went back to have a look at this, and he was singing it at the beginning, but just seemed to lose interest half-way though and dropped his head a couple of times, and looked actually kinda sad by the end of it. Hard to read too much into it, maybe he was just stuffed, but you never know. His demenour has been a bit off this year, although I thought he looked more emotionally engaged tonight compared with other games this year.

He is a proud player, and his form has been down all season. He’s visibly frustrated by it imo. Like he Keeps thinking the next will be his breakout game, but just isn’t happening for him. His fitness and energy levels also seem down Vs his spaceman days

Still problems galore, and its a gamestyle that doesn't stack up.

Thought Adams was ok (had some pathetic moments by foot), with Crisp, Maynard & Noble all playing pretty key roles. Darcy Cameron did a job with the 9 marks and 2 goals.

The bad - Mayne, Brown, Phillips, Varcoe, Roughead, Madgen & Stephenson.

Acid really needs to go on Brodie Grundy right now. He is our marquee player who's performing like a complete potato.

I think tonight was a big win in the context of the season, the travel and some of the off field stuff...he should have been singing with gusto like the others...celebrating the return of two of his team mates. He’s incredibly selfish for me, he may have things going on off field which is fine. Let him deal with those, send him home...there are other players that deserve to play and more importantly want to play!

Yeah, I've noticed he's quite hard on himself. When he misses a goal you always see him admonishing himself. Seems like he's playing with a lot of weight on his shoulders at the moment. Hopefully he pushes though and eventually finds the freedom in his game because that's when he'll shine.

Harsh on Adams, the whole team was sloppy early. He improved, it’s a mammoth effort for him to be even contributing with at intensity given the schedule! Same goes for Grundy and I’m convinced he’s been carrying a knee, he hasn’t been spreading as much...or he’s been instructed to play to conserve himself.

I think Mayne is harshly judged, he has no real defined role he plugs holes where ever they exist in any given game or moment. It’s hard to determine what he does, a lot of it defensive and you can’t deny our team team defence works!

If you watch quite a few players had the same sort of body language (I.e going through the motions). Could be nothing more than a win over last place combined with 3rd game in 9 days in a third state. I’m also pretty sure they were going to be headed back to the airport once Bucks had done his presser, so they didn’t have a lot of time which is why Bucks pulled them in straight after the song so they could have a quick after match team meeting.

So close to $475 :(

40 seconds to go was hoping Adelaide would just get 1 goal haha

Bad luck there...

Just a little fun bet here!!!

Daicos got his 3 consecutive handballs with 1 minute to go, to take him to 15 disposals..

Swooped thanks for such a comprehensive summary, I don’t know if you do that every week but when I saw it tonight I was rapt. For years, after every game, ( whether I saw it or not) I have gone to the AFL site to study the stats, and then I usually come on here to what other people’s perspectives are and then I try to eliminate my own supporter bias, so that I can try figure out what actually happened.
If you are doing this every game, I won’t have to go to that crappy AFL website that jambs up my IPad with all of its (unneeded and unwanted bells, whistles and advertising crap) and I bow before you. If this was a once off, then I thank you for it.

I'm thinking oen reason we started scoring more freely was Adelaide stopped flooding uor forward line for some reason.
Still have to learn how to counter the forward flood but Cameron looks like he will help a lot with that by bringing a lot of balls to ground, then we need some real class like Sidey or Pendles parked in the forward line ready to crumb and manufacture some goals in a flood.
And Steaknive's precision entries were great and make a huge difference but not sure if would be very effective in a mega flood that we usually get.

Terrible first half. Except for Daicos and Dunn's goals.

But after half time? NOW that's what I'm talking about. That's the ball movement, we all remember. Now just have to put it in a whole game.

* You can't help but love Ruscoe. His excitement and energy he brings is exactly what we need.
*Was very happy to see Broomy and Dunn get through this game. After so long out, its sometimes easy to forget the pace of senior football.
*Daicos keeps getting better every week. Has class like no other.
*Adams stood up. Leading from the front.
*Crisp was huge. His kicking skills is elit.e
*Maynard had a wonderful game.Having some kind of season.
*Stevo with 2 goals. Finally, hopefully they start realizing his best position is inside 50. Not higher up the ground or on the wing. He gets lost. Near goal is where he belongs, just like back in 2018
*Thomas, I was happy to see him finally get reward for effort. One thing about Thomas, he doesn't need much room to kick one. He knows where the goals are.
*Cameron had a great 2nd half, getting better all the time. His contested marking is beautiful. Cox should be very very worried.
*Mayne's time is almost up. Never never.. put him in the forward line. He and Varcoe should have swapped ends. But feels like Mayne's time is slowly slipping away.
*I thought the Sier/Wills combo worked well. I thought Wills in general had a pretty good game. Sier's 2nd half was a lot better than his 1st.

Injuries aside, we still lack class in the midfield, genuine key forwards and our gameplan is absolute bollocks. This side is in need of a major overhaul at the end of the season;

I'd raise my quarter empty glass in salute..... but that would obviously be discounting lack of routine, constant travel away from home and family, 4 day breaks playing in 3 states, injuries etc
