It's a somewhat frustrating situation with the ruck backups - Griffin is far superior to Hannath as a tap ruckman and around the ground, but Jack is so much better than Jon as a forward and has an excellent kick for such a tall man.

I'm thinking that Sandi might spend a little more time in the back half helping out with intercept marks, with Hannath handling forward stoppages. I can live with De Boer as Mayne's pressure replacement in the forward line - I just don't want the team to funnel attacks through him at half forward, because he still can't kick over a tea chest and invariably stuffs things up in that particular role.

It's also possible Taberner will spend more time back, rotating with Hannath perhaps...
De Boer isn't playing.

I know Duffield has been poor, but I am a bit nervous about having Alex Pearce in and then dropping Duff in the context of having a settled back 6. Assuming Mz will be called in a support role down back rather than forward. Or maybe Clancee to roll back?

AA Luke and Spurry to be the main organisers down back. What's GC's forward line looking like?
Stanley, T. Lynch, J. Harbrow
Wright, Dixon, T. Miller

Not as formidable on paper. Alex Pearce will probs go on Lynch, tough battle for him. I'm sure Ibbotson and Clancee will be floating around. McPharlin to Dixon.

Not sure if you've seen much of Peel this year but Jack has improved significantly (and I definitely haven't been his biggest fan....).

Last two games they've both played:

Griff D: 12 M: 3 HO: 31 Goals: 0

Jack D: 15 M: 5 HO: 22 Goals: 1.5

Hit outs are a bit misleading because when they play in the same team, Jack obviously spends more time forward. Last game Griff didn't play and Hannath and Moeller shared the ruck duties, Jack got 35 HOs, which is more than Griff's average when he plays the number 1 ruck role.

I think Jack is the obvious replacement for Clarke. Good call by the Match Committee IMHO.

Roger that...why did I think he was? That's welcome news for my blood pressure come Saturday - and not for the same reasons as much of the female population! I like Matty's hardness at the ball, but jeez the amount of frustrated screeching at him I've done over the last couple of years...

Crozier should be able to handle the job against Gold Coast anyway.

I do agree that Sutcliffe has been absolutely shocking the last couple of weeks, but he plays in an area of the ground where we are quite stretched and it's probably his offensive drive that has saved him over Duffield - it's certainly not his superior man-on-man record, where you could argue they've been as bad as each other...

I have been a fan of The Mammoth and really want him to do well - but until I see him get more than 5 hit outs in an AFL game, I remain to be convinced that he can serve as a pure backup ruck.

They are trying to stretch us for height in the backline. Ibbo to Lynch at 199 is a big ask. Luke to play on Dixon and Pearce on 2metre Peter.

Watch us waltz the ball out of the backline like nobody's business. Scores from defensive 50 a plenty!

I hope we dominate the middle and cut off supply, as our undersized backline will be struggling with those match ups. On the other hand, we will have them on speed and mobility on counter attack, so hopefully we can spoil them and run out the ground ball from their inside 50 - assuming our mids allow it to get there.

I assume Crozier will play Mayne's role and Mzungu will be sub.

Unless someone else is put on notice for being poor last week by being made to wear the green vest. Sutty?

Me when I heard the Gu was in.

Gotta say I really like the lineup as is currently listed on afl.com

TEAMROUND11.jpg

Having sutty and Sherro on the wings plays to their strengths, with hill and d Pearce on opposite hf flanks... Very agressive. Sutty is at his best further up the ground as an intercept mid... While his defending has been off, he is still a lovely kick and a magnificent reader of the play. If the guys play these positions on the day I will be a very happy man. :thumbsu:

Hannath or Griffin will come in for Clarke.

May give Tabs runs in ruck to see how he goes. The allows them to sub off a ruck in this and future games
Can confirm this theory. Was working on ruck taps at training with Eastaugh. Looked surprisingly adept, may pinch hit. Would allow to sub out Hannath late and keep Tabs out there.

I called it right! :) Mz, Clancee to roll back. Glad to see Sutty further up the field, hopefully has a good showing on Saturday. Suban or Croz as sub, likely Croz. Allows us to sub out Hannath if we are too tall up forward and add some more attacking run late in the game.

If only he had Clarke's leap and agility. Man he'll look small compared to Dixon/Lynch. Tabs have the tank and running speed to last all game, better then Clarke tbh just his marking obviously.

Yeah Tabs' marking still needs a lot of work tbh. Doesn't seem to take the ball at it's highest point enough, sort of gets the hands up there and hopes it sticks. Doesn't really take hold of the ball with the authority of a strong marking forward, plenty of room for improvement there. Does work on his marking a fair bit more than most at training so is aware and is doing his best to rectify, will take time as he is not a natural clunk.

That has to be shortest back six RTB has named during his time at freo...I like it a lot.
