I don't think opposition fans would have been too angry if that mark had been paid

Reckon if you watch closely, the ball hits the ground, right in front of his hand and skids up into his hand. The right hand was out flat, and grabs the ball on the side as it skips up. But whatever.

Nah, went through frame-by-frame and the relevant frame is the second still picture, you can see fingers below that.

I can't really blame the ump, Taylor certainly provided the excuse. Needs to stop taking it out on the worms.

Proof is in the pudding and the pudding landed in his hands ;)

I'd still rather the umps don't guess, they need to make the call as they see it - watching that replay shows Dan moving the ball up to his chest, IMO in normal speed this could be seen as a bounce. Was a tough call against Dan, maybe the selection of 4 umps in the future may have them closer and less likely to have to guess? I'd had a couple of rants about the umps in this game but feel less uncomfortable/aghast about this decision.

s**t yer, from what Fages said post match he would have given his 5 to Harris, you probably need a degree in abstract algebra to work it out but does that mean Woosha gave his 5 to Stringer?

Stringer must gotten 5 from one of them. Neither Saad nor Merrett could have possibly got a 1 as they were taken by Witherden and Hurley. Therefore neither of them got a 5, and the only other option is Stringer.

A degree in abstract algebra? Here's how you do it: Write down 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 in two separate lines on a post-it note, and then start circling the ones that have no other options.

A 9 must be a 5+4. A 1 must be a 0+1. From there, there are no 1s left to use, so the sixes can't be 5+1, which means the other 5 must be in 5+2=7. Leaving a 4+2 and a 3+3.

The Zorko play on call just forward of the square was a head dropping call. Killed momentum the works.

To be fair to him his teammate should have verbalised someone was there. Communication is so pivotal - that's why the Swans are so good.

Bit late but here's my thoughts for what they are worth. Really scrappy ugly contest. No excuses for either side as the conditions were perfect for footy – not much breeze, warm sunshine that got a bit cooler towards the end, but no rain or moisture anywhere.

I thought Essendon played badly and we played worse. I thought the umpiring was dreadful at some points. No consistency, a lot of 50/50 calls going against us and I think most of the umpiring decisions could have been called play on and no-one would have noticed or cared. Not blaming them for the loss, but it was really poor. Two umpires with 29 and 11 games between them, and then McInerney with 422.

The difference was goalkicking – Mitch Brown kicked some difficult shots on the run, we missed some really straight forward shots. It’s becoming inexcusable that the Lions can be this poor with their kicking. My friend who I go to the games with is a specialist doctor – she turned to me in the 4th quarter after Tom Cutler had basically decided he’d had enough and dropped his bundle rather than make a second effort and said if she went into work with the same attitude these guys do she’d be in front of the coroner in short order.

I cannot understand how skills like set shots, kicking, marking – can continue to be so dreadful, year after year after year after year. This cannot be all just down to talent, the application and attitude is not there and judging from the vitriol coming from around me in the crowd I’m not the only one who’s getting fed up. It was really ugly at times today, people saying the worst performance at home in a long time, lot of abuse and catcalls and dismissals from around me in the crowd. I know it’s not the most reliable straw poll by a long shot but there seem to be an awful lot of fed up spectators at the Lions.

Just over 20,000 people and I’d say about 8000 were Bombers fans.

Regarding the Lions side, the players for me who I think should not continue to remain on the list after this coming season are Nick Robertson, Ryan Lester, Sam Mayes and Tom Cutler. Darcy Gardiner would be next in line after getting rid of those 4.

Robertson is just a slow thug who will never have the nous, ability or spark to succeed at this level and that is clearly evident in his play. He has no vision beyond bombing long, does not have a short kicking game and repeatedly gives away idiotic free kicks.

Mayes is more gutless than a post-coffee crap and Lester is just not very good. A worse pair of 100 gamers you would be hard to find. Cutler has a terrible defeatist attitude on the field and should be axed immediately simply for dropping his bundle while out there. Not acceptable at professional level.

We are going to be in so much trouble when Stef Martin leaves or hangs up the boots. No sign of any ruckman coming through who will do anything, Oscar McInerney is tall but that’s about it, and lacks all of Stef’s physical presence not to mention his speed around the ground.

Christensen is not the player he was - or ever was, perhaps. Cam Rayner has great vision and should be persisted with, hopefully he manages to develop in spite of being at one of the worst finishing schools in the country. McStay is such a frustrating player! Beams barely saw the ball not sure who was tagging him but they did a fantastic job. Witherden, Rich, Zorko, Taylor, Berry all worked hard.

Hodge looks more and more past it with each week. Cannot be best 22 much longer barring injuries. That being said even without pace he still has more heart than most of the squad.

It’s going to be a long second half of the season. We might beat Carlton and we might beat the Suns, cannot see where we are going to win games from otherwise, the side is once again deep into the funk of “our season is over” and now they’re just trying to get through it. As are all the fans.

Another terrible weekend for Queensland footy. There’s a reason I laugh at the “it will all sort itself in time” crowd.

No, it really is not going to. I don’t see this side getting any better than maybe 1-2 years making a first week exit from finals in about 3-4 years time. Then sliding away again. And that’s optimistic, I feel.
