Autopsy Round 12, 2020 vs Geelong

imagine saying, oh I dont read too much into this loss.

Far out.

If we lost by a goal or 2 and it just wasn't our night then fair enough.

But we were dismantled. Brisbane embarrased us earlier this year, but wow, this was a whole other level. We scored half our goals from dubious 50m penalties. We only really created 1 genuine chance all night. They absolutely tore apart our game plan, our structures, our movement, and absolutely destroyed our players with the match ups. They also got in our heads and made us play like scared little boys.

There was no part of that, that can be forgotten, it was too bad of a loss.

We looked completely disinterested all night. Whether that is down to fatigue or just What Happen Power who knows. I'm thinking more the latter.

It was just typical bad Port Adelaide. What was it, 9-0 clearances to start the game? Trash. Clureys attempts at defending? Trash. The fact we left Clurey one out for most of the night on Hawkins? Trash. The constant fumbling? Trash. The one note forward strategy? Trash.

We really miss Marshall
We really miss Rozee

Get smashed in the midfield....fine....I don't like it, but fine, it happens, but why leave Hawkins one out all night? What happened to our team defense which has worked so well so far this year?

On the odd chance we actually did get it forward, literally all we did was kick it long to Dixon with 4 blokes on him. Pointless.

Very disappointing night, but completely expected.

PLAYER REVIEWS
Motlop - Awful. Either double grabbed or fumbled every touch he got. Straight back out. He's cooked

Georgiades - Was lost tonight. No idea where he was up forward most of the time. He's young, it happens. Hopefully next week he comes back better.

Dixon - Might as well have stuck a face mask on a ladder and left it up forward. Not sure what we expected him to do with 2 or 3 up against him with our high long kicks to him all night. But, he needs to change it up himself as well. If you are getting outmanned and out marked, start leading instead of just standing flat footed and hoping to take a contested mark.

Mayes - Didn't think he was all that bad, just didn't really get involved a lot

Duursma - Looked very very very slow tonight. Couldn't sprint. His game suffered because of it. Was second to the ball at just about every contest he was involved in

DBJ - Beaten by Miers. Just wasn't in good position all night

Farrell - Not doing anywhere near enough, but would prefer to keep him in the side over Motlop

Hartlett - Ran around not doing a whole lot all night, but at least he put his body on the line and won a couple of contests

Gray - Fumbled up forward every time he went for the ball. Was better further up the ground

Jonas - At least he beat Hawkins a few times. Was mildly ok

Clurey - Just awful defending, made 10 times worse by the fact he was isolated all night. Then was moved onto Rohan and was outbodied by him too.

Butters - Tried really hard, got involved and was at least able to get some of the ball as a link up through the midfield.

SPP - Thought he was one that stood up in the first half and was trying to get something going. Had a real good patch through the 2nd quarter. Fell out of it in the second half

Woodcock - On one hand you have the experienced Motlop offering * all all night. Then you have a 3rd game player running hard, trying to create an option, changing his leading patterns up forward, getting to the fall of the ball and giving his all. Thought he was in our top few players

McKenzie - Just didn't get involved enough. All his touches come from kick ins. Was nowhere defensively

Ladhams - Offered zero up forward which was disappointing after his marking form last week. Was ok further up the ground. Just needs to get stronger through his core. Gets thrown around in ruck contests too much

Rockliff - Bad in the first half. Just bad. really offered very little. Not much more to add. 1 step forward, 2 steps back

Amon - Was sloppy early and they put him under physical pressure all night. Couldn't get free to use the ball effectively

Lycett - Was decent in the ruck, ok around the ground and kicked a nice goal. Good game

Wines - Statistically ok but most of his touches were under pressure and just rushed. No clean ball at all

Houston - Really really disappointing. Couldn't get out of 2nd gear.

Boak - Got a lot of the ball and worked hard but like Wines a lot of his disposals were just rushed kicks forward.

Just kept getting sucked up to the ball which allowed Geelong to get a handball over the top and into space whenever there was a ground ball to be won.

Geelong is the best side in the comp at shutting down any sort of run, which is why you have to play them fast on turnovers. The two things I said we needed to do, we didn't do. Caught in this no-mans land of not really affecting the play, but not zoning off to make it hard for Geelong to transition either.

We had 8 players who could register a single 1%er during the game - Hartlett, Motlop, Rockliff, Wines, Dixon, Woodcock, Duursma and Georgiades.

6 players only managed to register one - Boak, Gray, Amon, Houston, Ladhams and Mayes.

I can handle a loss like this as long as the players use it as an opportunity to understand that just because a style of play worked against Richmond, it's not going to work against every single team. If you're going to go up to the contest to help a teammate win the ball, make sure you win the ball. Otherwise you're better off just letting him fight it out and keeping your man accountable.
Actually thats a good review. can't believe it's from you 🤔

Horrific positioning in q1, adjusted and stemmed it, then just fell in a hole. serious issues with leadership. front runners.

Mayes is Aaron Shattock, why is he even on the list? Motlop did exactly what anyone would expect of him now.

Gotta ensure we don't flog woodcock, ladhams, farrel, Georgie, butters into the ground chasing top spot. hive that away aim for top 4.

Throw the book at a KPD and is get Guthrie type player. He humiliated our mids tonight.

I just don't understand how a team can be nearly 7 kilos heavier across the board.... for anaerobic running game. And blow us apart. I have no words to this. Reminds me of Floyd Ottens running down Pettigrew in the 07 GF

Yep. That little handball over the top out of a contest to a lone Geelong player. It was happening in the first 5 minutes and we just never cottoned on. That killed us. As did our forward entry, which was automatically mopped up by Geelong and moved out like a training drill. Our inability to pressure those spills was infuriating.

Both of these factors meant we got absolutely destroyed in transition.

I would have loved to have seen us try something different. Possess the ball for a bit instead of bombing it long. Try to switch occasionally. Break forward fast with run and carry. Bring up McKenzie/Farrell/Amon and try to dob a few goals from 50 to draw that defence out. It didn't help that we were fumbly and lost confidence, but we have to mentally stronger than that. I know Hinkley says that making changes during a game don't achieve a lot, but when everyone watching can see what's going on 5 minutes in, *. Do something different.

Top teams don't lose like thst. We are imposters. Best to know reality now that face another 119
Yes they do.
Richmond lose to Adelaide by 76.
Richmond absolutely smashed by St Kilda

Yeah. From our reports, you were interested in DeKoning in last years draft, which we nabbed. But, he is more a long-term prospect, he wouldn't have helped tonight. I mean Henderson was delisted by us, and then we Rookied him, you could've nabbed him for nothing with a very late draft pick. He is on the decline, but can do the job, actually Henderson has been suprisingly good this year. Maybe the coaching camp didn't think you were contenders this year and still on a build. Hmmm... all clubs make list mistakes, but that one might hurt your campaign this year. Still you have a decent squad if you can close those holes.

Ok, 3 posts with good points points made.
This is our postgame sulk, move along now please. Feel free to come back mid week

Geelong were always going to re-rookie him. No one drafts players from other teams when thats happening.

Duursma really hasn't had the same running power since the hammy, weather it's confidence or it's still not quite right he hasn't been the same since

These two performances are related, IMO.

And they were laughing at us late in the game...geez does that make me f####g angry

Geelong were brutal and too good.

They were switched on- sandwiched Dixon, manhandled our receiver, used their big bodies to spill the ball and pick up the crumbs.

They pretty much suffocated our free ball movement.

Tom Clurey was Ben Browned.

We must bounce back hard with 5 wins and find them in October like Sean Connery.

Disappointed seeing Boaky having a nice ol jovial chat with danger after the game. Just lost by 10 m8 lololol. Jonas shoulda been grabbing everyone and pushing them down the race for a spray but nah just a bad night.
They played like it was a trial game and that sort of attitude doesn't surprise me after the game... its like they're satisfied at where they are..

In all seriousness from the first bounce I thought we looked indecisive, timid and intimidated. Would not be surprised if despite a convincing win over Richmond last week we simply lack confidence against a side whom have been (and continue to be) in our heads since 2007. We continue fumble the ball and struggle with providing and taking clean possession for advantage. AFL is such a fast moving game fractions of a second can can make all the difference - when you fumble or have to stoop to receive clean possession of a kick or handball it puts you under pressure and you lose any advantage. This seems to be something we've struggled with for many years and never really addressed.

We have the same problems now since 2013, can’t beat top 8 teams, always choke when it’s an important time of our season, always look good and then fall away. Every year, even in 2014 we blew for not making top 4..

we have changed nearly all the players, all coaches are different, different game plans, but the same problems are there.

The things that remain the same since 2013, Hinkley, KT and Koch. Get them out.

Are our defenders not permitted to play back shoulder? Our embarrassing efforts on Hawkins were more about poor positioning (and no help in the air) than a lack of size, IMO.

Was an overall terrible team defensive game. When their mids are kicking it inside 50 with no pressure to a 1 on 1 Clurey is always going to get beaten.

It’s poor structure and defence.

They bullied us beyond belief. We are not an inexperienced team that can say thats an ok thing. They absolutely beat us up everywhere.
I didn’t feel we were bullied out of it. We just weren’t switched on at all. Easy balls into Hawkins, of course he was going to be too strong. He was also accurate. We were fumbly as hell, lacked awareness, played dumb which made them look a very smart football team. Dangerfield was pinpointing pretty much everyone of his kicks. And we then gave up in the last qtr. The intensity from last week was nowhere to be seen. You put the constant fumbling together with most of our players second guessing themselves, and you’re going to get that sort of performance.
