What has pick 71 Suttcliffe done to 'cement' his spot, that croz (pick 20) and sheridan (pick 16) have not. What do you guys think they can do to stay in the team? Who do they push out if they lift their game as well?
IMO: Croz to have more score board impact and Sheridan to start to accumulate more ball in the midfield like our little man Neale!

On a side note, If SNOS gets dropped that's horrible bad luck for him! He's played well and deserves more AFL games. i hope he keeps his chin up!

Sounds a lot like Garrick Ibbotson's Rising Star nomination

Fremantle haven't had a Rising Star nomination since 2011 - I don't see the big deal.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you about personal awards and nominations, however the players you have mentioned so far have at least earned them at the time, and at earlier stages of their careers, in the main.

Neither Sheridan or Crozier have been close to that recognition.

The early stages of a player's career often depends on the situation the club they're with is in.

Sheridan I see as a vanilla player who will take some time to reach the level someone like James Kelly or Andrew Gaff is at. Nothing particularly special but a good hard running role player. As unsexy as those roles are, teams still need them.

Impossible to tell at this stage of their development. Crozier is a flashy player who hasn't been able to produce any flashiness at AFL level. Sheridan is an accumulator who hasn't been able to accumulate at AFL level. Both performing very well for Peel but they both need more time, IMO.
This. Exactly this.

When you're vanilla you aren't going to have many highlights.

I can't think of a single thing James Kelly has ever done that has made me think "wow" but he's a three time premiership player + 200 gamer.
Dunno, I think I may have said wow 2 weeks back when ballas pulled his pants down and kicked a goal from the free

Not sure if serious.

Sutcliffe has looked at home at AFL level. Another diamond in the rough found by our recruiters.

Yep I agree, he is a great player and I like him. I am serious in asking what has Suttcliffe done that's more than Sheridan and Croz? just interested in opinions

For one, he's a lot tougher at the contest then either of the other two. He also looks to have a better grasp of the game plan as well.

Briefly, my thoughts are he's got a footballers brain. Knows where to run and position himself while still keeping his opponent in check. Then displays good balance, great decision making and can execute well by foot. Most importantly he just looks 'at home' at the top level, it's an immeasurable thing I guess

I seen crozier and Sheridan out recently and they really are twigs. A think a key reason they are struggling is they do not have the physical size required for their positions and playing style at AFL level. Some gifted players do not need that physical presence to play well (I.e. Wingard, fyfe when he was thin), but they are freaks.

Get them on protein shakes, the lean meats, the complex carbs, plenty of milk, just tell them to eat like lions and lift the intensity in the gym. Get them to have a chat to fyfe, his transformation of this first three years was 'redonkulous', maybe it was his country diet and general country strength. They just don't have that thickness through the thighs, hips and core. Once you establish some serious strength through your middle your balance will improve in the contest. This will help winning contested ball, standing up in tackles, shrugging tackles, standing your ground in a marking contest and missing less tackles.

Balance is an under rated quality in the afl.

Suttcliffe puts his head over the ball, never shirks a contest and generally makes the right decisions in a particularly difficult position on the ground and a vitally important one within RTB's game plan.

Quite an achievement for a young bloke, and the tangible improvement in his output and development stands in stark contrast to others.

I was surprised when Sherro was subbed out of the game instead of Fyfe, who was clearly injured and copping a heavy tag at the same time.

I thought Ibbo did alright once he adapted to the pace of the game.

I'm sure Hill and Fyfe will play, not sure who comes out for who though.

But I think Lee Spurr and Tommy Sheridan might be looked at.

I wasn't, once he came back on after the initial injury it was clear the medicos thought thought it was OK to play on. Fyfe up forward would've been a genuine concern for them and subbing him off would've meant a tag for Hill who was running riot.

Yeah Tommy is in the gun for sure, but may still play. I have not heard one negative from any Freo representative about Lee Spurr (unlike DeBoer) so they may still be happy with his KPI's, Ibbo being in the team may change that especially barring injuries and when Walters comes back.

If Fyfe was a risk they would of gave him the vest. I know it would of been hard for Fyfe but I was thinking they told him to lay low and not contest like he usually does hoping he would still drag the heavy tag so Hill could continue to run free. They were persistent in tagging Fyfe even though he was clearly injured early.

To be honest, I think it's probably a little easier to fit in as a cog in our backline than it is to jump into our midfield. Besides the fact that the backline is a naturally more structured place to fit in, we have a lot more experience and depth back there to help direct a young player on where he needs to go. Shero is trying to pick up a more difficult task, and hasn't really shown the capacity to do it with any kind of consistency at AFL level yet. Neale picked things up pretty quickly. Shero is looking like a slower build.

SND saying he's exactly the same player and shown zero signs of improvement seems a bit over the top to me. He might not have obviously improved by a lot, but a little bit is more than zero.

Can take a while for young players to take the next step, and sometimes it can happen pretty suddenly. Hopefully the step up isn't too far around the corner, but in the meantime he can continue to develop in the WAFL, and pick up the odd game up in the firsts when form and opportunity are there.

Why Spurr?

I don't think he has been at his best all year and has turned the ball over a few times. I love the fact that he is a hard nut though, but Ibbo being fit would be the likely one to stay in the side, even without Matty De Boer.

Geeze, we do need to fix our forward line though. It's a double teamed Pav with Ballas and the odd resting ruck man at the moment.

I reckon they left Fyfe on the ground and told him to play up forward because if Fyfe was subbed, Picken would have gone to Hill.
Mitch Wallace was doing the job on Fyfe and considering what Fyfe is Wallace must be near as good as Creepy.
Picken had Ballas.

The risk was that Fyfe could have severely injured his ankle by playing on. Even Ross on 882 mentioned that they ran the risk of the bones separating which is common with ankle injuries.

Tommy Sheridan was doing okay, wasn't outstanding with only 9 possessions, but they did run the risk of losing Fyfey.

Nat didn't train today but will train on Friday. His ankle is still swollen though which is why they are giving him until Friday to recover.
