It's funny how after you have a tough competitive two weeks on the track you play good contested footy and run a game out. Something about play as you train.

I thought Sam Powell-Pepper along with Aliir Aliir both had dirty nights. Both had a case of Lachie Jones Syndrome as they could not handle the ball cleanly and Aliir's kicking was atrocious at times and cost us a couple of goals. Aliir's form has not been bad so he won't be dropped but SPP along with Travis Boak, who time has caught up with, must be in danger of time in the SANFL.

Oh, just on Finlayson, yeah he didn't have his best game but I'm not sure I agree with a lot of the comments on the GD thread. He was fired up and created opportunities for himself and others. He brings some of the mongrel we've been begging for. I liked seeing the intent, even if the execution isn't there.

Apparently the TV showed him being angry about being subbed. Yeah there's a need for professionalism and teamwork with stuff like that, but I don't mind the emotion. We're not robots and I'm happy when my team plays like it matters.
Finlayson brings some mongrel into the team? I have heard it all now lol.

Looking back at team mates who did not deliver the ball to him to make things easy for him.

The complete lack of second and third efforts. The only time he put in was that chase on the boundary line.

And then to top it off, sits like a petulant teenager on the bench after getting subbed out which was well deserved.

What a way to show the young kids in the team as to how to act as a professional footballer.

Carr has some major decisions to make on a number of players in the coming months, particularly:

Boak - delist/retire
Mead - delist
DBJ - trade/depth only
SPP - trade/depth only
Finlayson - delist/depth
you can add Burton, Lachlan Jones, McEntee and Marshall. but none of those are particularly hard decisions ....none would be missed and Marshall is just collecting a pay slip before an obvious concussion retirement

Rare site in recent times to see them guts out a win like that.
The commentator circle jerk gushing for Kenny was total vomit viewing.
I liked Willies extended time on ground with the fans. With all the crap he’s endured over last few weeks it was great to see him enjoy a moment.

Does anyone know if Finlayson was like this at GWS?

What's going on with Finlayson, he's so far off it ATM, must of given away most of our frees.
I suspect subconsciously football isn't at the top of his list... his family and spending time with them is ...

he probably doesn't realize this ...

being 29 - 30yrs he very close to retirement

Yeah, that's exactly what I saw. This "playing for Kenny" crap the media vomits up is rubbish. The game was played with intent and an intensity the oppo couldn't match, it's that simple. Sure, it wasn't the best or most skilful game, but the conditions were tough - a swirly breeze in 7 degree cold on a ground that had been rained on all day.

The players played for each other, you could see it (and hear it). Especially heartwarming to see Rozee leading from the front, I thought he was inspirational. Butters got off the leash and caused havoc.

The defence? Well, despite having no discernible structure (not their fault) they kept a clean sheet in the third, only the third time that's happened to GWS in ten years. I thought they scrambled ferociously all night. Loved Bergman's game, when he cleans up his disposal he'll be a legend. The three talls covered each other effectively for the most part, it was good to see them actually looking out for each other.

Where we were let down was our path forward. We have no structured route to goal, so getting the ball out of the back half was always painful. That's not a personnel issue, although as has been discussed, some players were down on output. I kept thinking what we would look like with the clean ball movement forward GWS had.

Lots of skill errors, and the GWS goal in the last yo bring them within a point seemed like it was a matchwinner, and it wasn't. All the credit for that was clearly with the on-field 22 who lifted. It was clear to see.

I liked Jackson, who had a good debut, he was mobbed after his goal which was a great sign. Dunno why Moraes only got a few minutes, but he didn't waste them. Georgiades worked **** hard, it's a tough gig being a forward in our setup. He's going to be a revelation when well coached.

Ratugolea and his mates kept Hogan quiet, Farrell was very vocal organising the defence and played with a lot of confidence.

Yeah GWS weren't at their best, but a large part of that is we didn't let them get into gear. Our pressure looked like it was relentless - not always effective, but the intent was there.

Final note, yeah it's been mentioned but the umpiring was one-sided. Not just the raw count but the number of times we had momentum that was just shattered by a soft free. Coincidentally, these were rarely shown on the replay screen, so I can't really comment further until I watch again. Wouldn't mind the club calling this out, it happens do often.

Bottom line though good teams beat poor umpiring and yesterday I though we were a good team. Result was deserved.
V well summarised mate

The Vic media treat Hinkley like a protected species. Port win and it’s all due to Hinkley. Port lose and it’s not his fault, rolling out all kind of excuses
I can't understand the media love for Hinkley

maybe the Vic media is keeping Ken relevant for the next coaching gig interstate ???

Simply because the Vic media, and the AFL (and by extension, our board) is quite happy with us being perennial underachievers, provided we draw a crowd and pay our way.

This is not a new thing. Hinkley's manager, Peter Blucher is well entrenched in the Vic media circle jerk. By all reports is very close with Caro. Was chief footy writer with the Courier Mail for over 10 years.
Ironically, he was banned for a year over the Kurt Tippett saga being his manger and all.
Did he slip through Kenny's good guy net?

Just a quick correction: the Courier Mail is part of the News Corp stable, so it is related to the 'tiser and Herald Sun, not the Age.

Laughable

SPP has been out of form, but let's not forget he's coming back from an ACL. We have far bigger problems than these two.
Mead is plenty good enough to be a depth player that can come in and do a job a few times a year if we have a few injuries.
