Autopsy Round 14, 2021: Hawks fail against Bombers

That wasn’t Cegs worst game but we did the right thing and rewarded him for last week. Not sure it’ll happen again.

Thought Howe played one of his better games.
His ruck work was fine, that wasn't the issue. The fact is he doesn't work hard enough to go with his man...how many intercept marks did Draper have yesterday and Ceglar was no where near him??

Midfield still a big concern - they were light on and still smashed us. JOM/Mitchell can rack them up but get smashed at same time.

We need to stop playing so many slow mids and add some pace to take advantage of our half back line.

Literally no one in our entire midfield and forward line can break a line or burst through the contest with speed. Or really execute a good chase down outside of maybe kosi. Cousins is our quickest mid (chad has lost a yard or three).

Playing one recognised kpd was an error - no one could take Jones. But either Hartigan or DGB in a few weeks should help this.

Need to make some harder calls at selection but not sure we will.

I'm not sure that's what he was instructed to do. Ruckmen rarely play one on one around the ground, and both Draper and Ceglar would peel off defensively throughout the game. Draper just was way more imposing.

Ceglar was ok this week, not his worst. But I'm not sure he did enough to hold out Reeves given the rebuilding status of this team.

Blind Freddy could see we were undersized in the backline on Friday when the teams were announced.

Seriously, how could the games greatest coach not see this.....or did he?

One thing is for sure, if DGB is as good as we hope, the ground work done on our backline in 2021 will set the Hawks up for years to come.

So basically you’re saying we’re better off kicking behinds than goals. Okey dokey

Nope.

What I am saying is if you kick one of those goals amongst the string of behinds you had from repeat entries, you most likely wouldn’t be having the string of shots and therefore claiming you lost because you missed them.

Regardless, both teams had the same amount of shots on goal, both teams missed opportunities.

Essendon’s dominance around the ball was the reason they won, not Hawthorn’s inaccuracy.

Me too. Draper had 9.

So basically your saying if you take out Draper and Stringer, Hawthorn had the better of the clearances?

Parish still had the the same amount as O’Meara and Mitchell did and Howe only had 1.

The game was won around the ball, Bombers +13 in clearances and +19 in contested ball tells the story.

If you take out all of Essendon's midfielders on the day, Hawthorn actually won the midfield battle

I would say if you take out Draper than we would have had the better in at least the clearances. Ceglar is a bit of a downhill skier in that space and Draper bullied him which allowed ya'll to have the ascendancy in the middle. I think if Philips had played Ceglar would have had a much greater impact in that space, and I think that we would have been much stronger around the middle as our players wouldn't be watching out for his tree trunks smashing about.

All academic in the end- your mob were much better in that area.

It’s funny that as frustrating as it is watching us completely fail in the middle most weeks I’m pretty excited about what this side is going to be doing in 12 months time when you look at what is sitting in the stands and/or challenging for spots at Box Hill, and that we’ll add Pick 2 at a minimum.

Sic, Gunners, DGB, Reeves, Saunders, Jeka, Downie, Kent....if they’re all fit and firing in 2022 in addition to what’s already out there, we’re going to be very fun to watch.

We actually do, but he was preoccupied with Hooker. Is the exact matchup when he is forward. And has the mongrel to not cop any of Stringers crap too. Blame Hartigan for being a goose.

To be fair though, overall our backline in general has looked better a little smaller the past few weeks with Hartigan out and Day back in.

We've been there for 20 years and won 4 flags in that time. Would think we could at least make it 50-50.

Yep, you'd also think the Hawks fans would actually line up at the chance to see us play a large Melbourne based rival rather than Freo or Gold Coast.

Losing stoppage clearances and contested ball was expected given Hawthorn took a player away from stoppage to have an extra behind the ball. Essendon won the centre clearances by 6 with Draper having 5 (Ceglar 0).

A clear strategy to give up a number at the contest to recover the ball and have a cleaner transition. That's basically how it played out with Hawthorn having more of the ball and inside 50s and scoring shots ending roughly even. Unfortunately, Hawthorn lost the clearances when the numbers were even (in the centre) and didn't take their chances kicking for goal as much as Essendon did.

The game had different flows and competing strategies. It's pretty silly (generous wording) to adamantly demand that only winning the initial stoppage had an effect on the outcome.

His ruck work was poor. He got dominated in the middle, Draper was giving them clean service out of the middle and was then also following up on the ground.

That’s because you don’t drop players who have games like Cegs did last week unless you want the entire playing list to implode.

Anyone who suggested Ceglar needed to be dropped after last week is utterly clueless.

100% correct and I'm at the top of the list of those who want us to move on from Ceglar.... but he warranted another crack after Sydney.

He didn't take it, tough s**t for him. He had a chance and now Reeves is highly likely to come back.

Did it really though?

Both teams had 24 shots on goal, Essendon missed some sitters too.

A lot of the Hawks misses came from repeat entries, it’s likely if you kick one of those the other shots aren’t created as the Bombers were monstering the Hawks in the midfield.
We actually had a few more if you want to be technical about it.

Draper was smashing us and you guys were dangerous out of the middle.

But its hypothetical to say if we kicked another few goals instead of behinds that you guys just would have responded out of clearance.

The cleaner better team won on the day .

Howe might have saved his career this last month. He's finally believing.

Is in that 70 game range where they either believe it they don’t. You hope that by 50 games they believe, but some take a little longer, especially if they have been in and out of the team.

Maybe starting to now show some consistency.
