The fourth quarter was essentially a repeat of the Adelaide game from the week before. The opposition were running hard with confidence and sensed that we were vulnerable. After conceding the lead we leave it until the last 5 minutes to lift and do something about it. Doesn't seem like a fitness issue more like a mindset issue.

Too many lazy players that just expect it to happen because we won a flag last year. If there's no response next week against Geelong then the leadership group need to get together and have a serious talk during the bye about where we are and where we want to be as a group. Can't think of another club that's as hot and cold as us during 4 quarters of football this year.

I'm not giving up on this season like others already are, we were in a far worse position in the first half of last year. We've proven we're good enough in several games this year and patches of others but we have issues that need to be worked through.

A couple have mentioned their run from the backline opened us up. That is how I saw it. Forward half pressure was poor. Not sure if dropping Charlie, Levi or Kai will achieve too much unless the season is over which at this point it isn't.

Except rewarding players that do well in the VFL, otherwise morale just goes down the drain. Not saying replace all three, but I would bring in McLachlan (6 goals already in the VFL).

Balancing act of rewarding VFL players and getting the confidence back in players whom are considered ahead in the pecking order. May click next week for those players but sending back to the VFL may kill confidence further. I am sure Fagan knows how those players tick.

But will his game transition to playing against full time professionals?

Hes bobbing in the right spot against some part timers in the VFL. How does that translate to running around against an opposition with Tom Stewart, Humphreys, etc.?

There is only one way to find out.

Not the week for it though.

Get Shagga in next week surely..
No one will be coming in who played virtually a full game today in the VFL.

Fages said as much in his post game presser... because it is only a 5 day break between games so I'm expecting Gardiner in for Payne to be the only change.

If the forwards can win the footy then we won't have to worry about defending ball movement
do not disagree we not locking it in our front half. Charlie back to wrestling too much. Kia underdone.. Day not really defensive
Although 18-10 centre clearances when Cadman and Hogan marked everything was a few easy goals for them

We dominate territory for long periods, miss, repeat entry, miss, repeat entry, turnover and opposition go the length of the ground and kick one.

Starting to think teams are happy to just sag back, absorb the entries and then get us on the rebound with our lack of speed (and hunt) in defence.

Hard to argue against that trend you describe except for the 9 times out of 14 this year where we have come away with the win.;)

We are very lucky in that our issues are very fixable. Bye can't come soon enough.

Well when we do shoot lately we give the ball back to them either out on the full or a behind :)

We need whoever that shows the interest to chase, harass, tackle. More importantly we need our midfield to wake up rather than letting the opposition waltz away from every center bounce.

I think we could move Berry inside next to Neale and Dunkley giving more protection, send WAshcroft to wing.

Rest Levi and play Bruce in the other wing, Shagga for Charlie or Kai.

Dizzy will come in for Payne anyway. Looks like Gallop was held back too so he's an option as well.

Harris got owned today…he is not a one on one defender.
The Ashcrofts have become stars of the club way too soon without consistent performances.
Forty was great today. Won the hitouts by a lot but or midefield let us down again.’
Paynie gone for the year…need a plan B. Once again it can easliy unearth a future champion of the club.
I think we need to cut Levi some slack. He’s a first year player, coming in with over inflated expectations because of his brother, he was a very high draft pick, and his juniors performance.

Typically first year players are allowed to play somewhat unaccountable footy, and then expected to work more into the system year 2 & 3. He is being gifted games, but so was our class of Rayner, McLuggage, Berry etc. because the quicker “elite” juniors get to 50 games the better.

He’d contributing incredibly well in general as a first year player. The stronger accountability should rest on the shoulders of his more senior teammates.

I will go through the threads when I have time later. For now tho, I wasn't able to watch the game yesterday as I was long driving in country vic but was able to listen to the first half.....sounded promising, hmm.

..I finally got to check the scores with about 3mins to go, couldn't believe it, then thought yes I can, we've done it again!

18 bloody points! Seriously, even if half of them were goals, we'd have won.

Was then very glad I missed the whole game....and then thought of you guys and could only image the tone of the game day thread and this one..

They need their heads banged together but with our luck they'd all end up with concussion!!

Fages you need to work miracles again...and fast please.

Yeah, I cut Levi slack because of precisely this. Ideal world I like him as our sub and Fletcher back on the wing.

I want to see Will and Lachie be more consistently accountable defensively.

Who were our best players?

..and any news on Jack Payne? I felt sick when he went down, was horrible to listen to it unfold.

Logan was comfortably our best I thought.

Cam was pretty consistent too, Fort was fine. It wasn't a good outing from most players.

This is a very good point often overlooked pardon the pun.
It may not be as bad as say giving a free to the opposition after the center bounce.
But most teams are able to at least take the ball to the wing area of the ground.
From there the next kick they may turn the ball over but a lot of the time it makes it to the opposition forward half or creates a stoppage or a goal.

So, if both sides kick around the same number of points it is not a big issue.
However yesterday we basically gave GWS 13 more chances (18 less 5) to get the ball into their forward half and possibly kick goals while registering 13 points to ourselves.

GWS scored 11.2 (68) from defensive half chains. Now some were turnovers i don't know how many, but quite a few had to come from behind kick ins. There is probably a stat for that for both teams but i don't have it.
