No one will be coming in who played virtually a full game today in the VFL.

Fages said as much in his post game presser... because it is only a 5 day break between games so I'm expecting Gardiner in for Payne to be the only change.
He says this but also makes minimal changes when the seniors had short breaks. I can hope he has learnt to be more aware of rotating the list but I feel its just another excuse to back in his preferred lineup to the hilt

Incidentally is the Charlie contract extension our worst call on the list in a long time? Scary to think how bad he will be by 2028 at this rate. 3 more seasons AFTER this.
this is a bit extreme.

think cameron still have plenty of good footy left. was our second highest goal kicker last year only behind daniher when he signed the extension. it was a sound enough list decision.

decline with age isnt always linear. most people here thought zorko getting an additional year after 2023 was line ball. went on to have an all australian year. im not saying zorko and cameron are exactly similar and cameron's more reliant on his athletic traits than zorko, but people here tend to exaggerate how much of cameron's pace is gone. hes still extremely quick.

before the weekend i thought he was putting together a pretty solid body of form. the calls that cameron should be put to pasture are premature.

Likewise, it's possible he's still got it in him. But he was terrible on Saturday

What he needs to get right out of his game is the arms outstretched and an annoying look on his face when he doesn't get it on a platter , still half having a spew and looking disinterested as the ball sails away with 10 minutes left in a close game. He's been doing that forever and when you're out of form it's a very poor look.

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say he has gone well backwards from last year. Statistically down on just about every measure and no longer looking like a multiple goal threat. I do wonder how much impact the change in role has had on his form this season (and last)

On the Couch did a bit of a dive into this game, the Lions pressure rating was very low and they let Finn Callaghan run around cutting us up on the spread. I am seriously worried about what the Cats wingers could do to us this Friday night, if we are not on with our pressure it could get ugly for us.

For all that Nathan Buckley is still bullish on the Lions being thereabouts at the pointy end of finals.

I think it's fair to say his body language shows us another side of him that's in need of a boost. Often he looks & acts like a spoilt child if things dont go his way. His urgency and committment to the team needs improvement. In my opinion Charlie has been playing for his own existence instead of doing what's right for the team & his team mates. He still celebrates to the extreme when he kicks a goal (although not too often of late) but watch him if someone else scores a major that he had no part in....it sometimes looks like he doesn't want to be there!
I think Charlie still has a lot to offer but not with the attitude he has currently. Maybe kicking goals and having a lot more noticeable involvement in games is what motivates him rather than playing his role and doing the little things well that help us win games. I hope he turns it around soon.

Seems like one premiership is enough for this group.
It might be for this year, but still bullish on the next couple of years. Seems to me a couple clubs have improved this year, and for me GWS at full strength could do what we did last year. IMO no Joe and now Payne, arguably makes us a little weaker than last year.

Charlie could be one of those players that once they have climbed the mountain they checkout - hard to tell if this is the case or not. I don't think going to play in the 2's will motivate him but a switched on Charlie is good for our team. Perhaps it is just a case of sitting down and working out what he really wants now.

The midfield not being accountable shouldn't have been an issue in the first half when we were dominating the contested possessions. Probably contributing to our low pressure rating was that we were first to the footy in every contest but we weren't scoring. Then when they went forward Hogan was marking everything.

I wonder if (maybe with WAsh fit) weve changed Dunkleys role a bit. His stats are similar or better to last year but doesn't seem to be having the big games he had last year

Still think the Day injury (and now Payne) was a big factor in derailing our season and us being unable to get over the line a few times

It was certainly the case for our man Joe. :sadv1:

Charlie has another 3 years left on his contract after this season so I hope it is not the case with him and it's just an extended form slump.

Has had some injuries and disruption. Wonder if he could have a Zorko type renaissance for a couple of years once he sorts his body out

Working out what he wants now is 1/2 the battle. Giving him what he wants to get his mojo back without disrupting the playing group is the other 1/2.

Dont think that comment is accurate. Joe lost his love for the game and wanted a better life outside footy. Winning the flag was an awesome way to go out but not why he decided to move on.

I would love to be wrong about him.

My sense is he has been so reliant on raw speed and fast-twitch fibres that even a slight drop off is hurting him

The goal-kicking is the baffling one though, and if he had been kicking straight it would make his decline a lot less. He misses such deflating shots too. That miss in the last quarter could really have turned the tide

My point on his contract is the length of it made no sense. He was never going anywhere so signing him until he is 34yo seems frankly odd. And he extended when he was already showing signs of a decline. I know the trade is often more years lower money but would have wanted to have been a massive discount!

He has been an absolute star for this club, gets fans in, excites the kids - so if in the end we hung on too long it won’t be my abiding memory

Just a bit of a head-scratcher

Not too late for him to turn it around. Time for him to look at what he has to offer the team and then execute to the best of his ability....for the team, not him.

Another ordinary fade out. Mental lapses are really hurting us this season. One thing to consider is this is very similar to how we started last year. We are good enough if we get our shit together. It will be interesting to see how we replace Payne and what we do to sharpen up our forward line.

In my opinion our forward line has been unsettled from the start this year. Day not coming in from the start then out for an extended period with a hammy, Kai out hurt for a bit and then playing injured,Hippy not playing as a key forward after the Day injury just didnt work & then going down back immediately after Payne hurt his knee last week hurt our forward set-up. They need a block of games playing games in positions they are best at and injury free.
I like Dizzy coming back as a tradional hard nosed defender. Thats where he plays his best footy.

Hey Sunny Land, was it you who said we did a lot of work on our forward 50 entries at training about a month ago and to keep an eye out for changes.

Have we seen it yet? Because things don’t appear too much different.
Was hoping to see a few more hit up leads in our forward 50 and hopefully a bit more space to lead into.

Our forward line was playing pretty poorly this time last year also. We know once it clicks it can't be stopped.

With Day back in, Eric no longer has to ruck, I think the physicality of it took it out of him. Providing he is fit, I can see Eric having a strong back end of the season...and we need him to.

Has our forward line even had one game without disruption?

Well,
I'd like to see us actually hit the hit up leads more than what we do.
We seem to go for too much at times and that is usually to a contest of lower percentage.
Does the simple head in. It really is basic common sense if you ask me.
Good discussion on Charlie.
Not sure what his actual role is , but for mind his better games are the ones where Charlie pops up in defence , getting tackles , getting around the park .
Then obviously up forward .
Maybe it's just the intensity with our general play, not being up there where it needs to be.
Funny how all our small forwards are a little lost or out of form.
Bit of disconnection with each other as well.
