That's the worst game I've seen Charlie play across the important facets of the game.

I'm not concerned whether we drop him whatever , what I'm wondering is whether this is what his capacity is now. It's been a while since he's instilled any confidence that he's a gun any more. If that's the case he needs to put in the effort in the parts of the game where younger players would be trying to excel.
Agreed. He has played about 10 good minutes of footy all year. Many people jumped on me earlier this year when I questioned his ability. He is just not player we loved a few years ago.

Maybe I had too many beers at the pub, but I thought the decision to move hipwood down back was not a good one.

I feel we should have figured out matchups with the available backmen, not continue to sacrifice our forward structure
Agree. He was our leading goal kicker by quite a bit before he was nominated as ruck relief when Day did his hammy and now moved from Key Forward to Key Back in minutes and….did a pretty good job considering. The problem is we dont have anyone who has versatility as a tall other than him really. Love Harris Andrews but Hogan smashed him today. Not seen that happen very often and Harris looked uncomfortable as a one-one defender all day today.
Hippy needs to be moved back in forward line and left there to do whaht he is best at. 192 senior afl games and 95% of them as a Key Forward. Thats his position.

Not sure why Kai is being picked. He is offering nothing at the moment. He is not getting goals and he is jogging along behind the play in defence. He is a serious liability with his defensive effort. He really needs time in the twos.

Overall our forwards applied no pressure all night and allowed a quick exit all night. Midefield were equally ineffective. I thought the backs did okay but the ball was coming in too quickly with minimal pressure.

I thought Hipwood did pretty well in defence and I wouldn’t be against giving him a few games down there. Morris was really good.

Conversion is the issue. Only Logan is averaging more shots on goal. If he'd been kicking the goals he should've like today we wouldn't be discussing dropping him

I have not seen the presser, so not sure of the context and inflection of his answer, but my uneducated knee jerk response would be thatthat's very narrow view. How about be a bit more strategic and manage their time on ground a bit better. Develop a plan to ensure fitness and readiness for a call up to the seniors?

Maybe that's what would happen?
Fages was asked about the possibility of Doedee coming in for Jack Payne, he didn't say it outright but there is no way Doedee will be coming in against the Cats, he said it would be unfair on Tom.

I thought it was a good presser, said we got beaten in the centre bounce, on the spread because we turned the ball over in bad areas ie. top of our attacking 50, it wasn't played in the style we like, it was to end to end/transition stuff. We like a more contested stoppage game with transition thrown in. I think he said there were 30 less stoppages than has been our average this season.

I thought the decision to move Hipwood to the backline was far too reactionary and a poor one.

It didn't stop Hogan or Cadman and robbed us of a target i/s 50.

I can see why we did it but at least see how we're going before messing up our structure.
Who should we have put there then?

He had 1 shot at goal today. BTW Ah Chee has had more shots at goal too.

I do think if Kai and Charlie had been kicking at anywhere near their ability or AFL average we would have won all our games this year except against the Magpies.

We can’t keep waiting for them to either find form. Time to make hard decisions and then reward VFL players.

Yeah today was a shocker but I'm pretty sure Idun has had his number for quite a while now.

Wouldn't be against dropping him if it was tp get him in form but I don't think we'll necessarily be a better team with him not playing

The Positives, not that many.

Sam Day: First game back played his equal best game (Saints the other) so that was a good surprise.
Starcevich: Got through the game. Looked a bit sore at one stage when he came off in the last.
Zorko: Still playing well. Most disposals for the Lions also 18 pressure acts, 6 more than the next best defender Starch (13)
Zorko also led the Lions in tackles with 4. But that just shows how bad the team was in that department. Lions 28 GWS 42

The Negative.

By far the injury to Payne and the whole that needs fixing for 6-12 months. Could be closer to 12.

Two weeks running the opposition could not miss a goal and the Lions could not get those 50/50 shots and there were a lot both weeks.

Andrews form has been down in my opinion, even though his stats are similar to the previous few years.
Today he registered 10 disposals and 1 pressure act. In the 2nd quarter did not touch the ball or lay a tackle.
With Payne now gone for the season he really needs to step up and lead that backline.

I actually agree with a lot of posters in regard to Cameron. Fagan needs to send a message even if is just to sub.
But he needs some confidence back into his game and may get that in the VFL.

Levi Ashcroft had his worst game since being quiet against the Cats early in the year. We play the Cats next week.
It's a long year for a 1st year player.

Centre clearances: Losing those 10-18 puts a lot of pressure on our defenders. Need to come out at least square for a game.

Midfield: It really struggles when one of Neal, McCluggage, Dunkley or Will have an off or below average game.

That was so f ing bad, I said at the time you would think they would have set procedures in place as to where to get off the bloody ground... incompetence of the highest order.
It's just a good job it wasn't an emergency.

Yeah. Especially in the last when we needed that taller player to at least target inside 50. We were a goal or two down… no idea why we played Eric down back when he was soundly beaten. Starc or Lester are more than capable of at least providing a physical contest to try to curb Cadman. Ricardi was missing and wasn’t a threat. Andrew’s just had to go with Hogan.

Eric did a few good things down back but did look lost which is understandable. But probably would have got more value and a better team balance than relying on Day and an undersized but talented Morris if he played forward.

I’m unsure on Fagan thinking but maybe he’s sending a message.

In fact we strategically managed to play Hipwood out of form this year.

Putting him in the ruck was obviously never going to work 5 minutes after we tried it ,and throwing him in the backline he has no idea really but as usual tried his best.

Leave him in the role that we know he can play effectively enough and see if he can get his confidence and timing back.
I'd like to see him playing more out on the wings. He is a good outlet, can take a mark, has pace, and is generally a good kick on the run. Just don't put him in front of the sticks with time to overthink it.

Having said he's a good kick, he proved that wrong with several really bad turnovers today.

With the way the two big Giants were competing in the air, I wondered if Sam Day would be pushed back. Not sure if he is capable but that was my first thought.
With Payne now gone for the season
Is that known or speculation?

There mustn’t be a side in the comp that is on the wrong side of expected score to the extent we always seem to be.

Today’s game just takes the cake.
So has the expected score got it wrong or is it just us that's doing something fundamentally wrong in the way we're playing this year ?
