Disappointing to lose against Footscray, but we’re being coached to play a more aggressive, free-flowing game which takes a bit of getting used to. That’s what the AFL wants and it arguably suits our list. But it tends to produce a lot of turnovers, and only really good teams are able to overcome that. We're not quite there yet.

McVeigh is promising as a coach, and being from NSW (I doubt whether the Pennant Hills crowd would be that comfortable describing themselves as “western” Sydney), hopefully we won’t need to replace him. With finals now firmly in the realm of mathematical possibility it’s also clear the rest of our season will be spent sorting out who stays and who’s tradable/de-listable, with the aim of assembling a squad to have a reasonable crack next year. Hence the blooding of players like Wehr and Angwin and extended game time for Bruhn.

I thought we looked pretty good against the Bulldogs up until the 11-12 minute mark of Q3, when Brander, having pulled down a great contested mark right in front of me, proceeded to kick the ball straight to a team-mate with no chance of effective disposal. That led to a run of five unanswered goals for the Bulldogs, with three in two minutes, and we were finished.

With all that in mind, Sunday against Collingwood won’t see much change in personnel because there’s too many injuries. Preuss and perhaps Thor Himmelberg might even get a smack or two from the AFL's puppet MRP.

Brander will probably line up against Collingwood anyway, as there’s so many first-choice players we cannot select, we just have to focus on getting everyone used to the new game style. Hopefully Flynn will be back from his late-withdrawal quad injury, as Preuss will either be out injured and/or suspended for yet another one of those sling tackles he seems to specialise in. I saw de Boer wandering around the Members Stand and he looked fine, and will probably be back in place of either Peatling or Sproule. TT might also return, and surely Lloyd must be close to recovering from his arm injury.

Collingwood are coming off the bye and will be rusty at the start, so we need to come out hard and convert all our chances. Looking at the percentages, the key to us winning will probably be the performance of the backline, which was noticeably down against the Bulldogs. Otherwise I think everyone's got the message about getting the ball forward through the corridor. We just need to persist.

It will be an intriguing Sunday afternoon.

Thoughts?

Find myself feeling so much better after losses these days at least we're fun to watch, Phil and Tim should be back in this week maybe Hopper the week after. Things are looking up for a fun second half of the year think we got a real good chance to beat Collingwood this week.

Preuss copped a week, but nothing mentioned about HH, so he would seem to be fine.

Preuss & Peatling definitely out; probably Angwin as well. Wait & see on whether Flynn's omission was mainly precautionary, or an actual injury.

TT & MdB ready to return, possibly Phil Davis as well.

I'd leave out Sproule and Brander as they add not much of value at this point. Heck, I'd even consider giving Derksen a debut to give him a taste.

As much as it pains me to say it, Haynes this year is a shell of the player he was been, so I'd be happy to bring Davis back in to partner Taylor as our main KPDs, and leave HH in the interceptor role that suits him best, and he's able to do it better than Nick at the moment.

Briggs to get his shot; even if Flynn is OK, I'd probably go Flynn-Briggs anyway.

Peatling will be sorely missed - he's been a revelation forward. While MdB comes back in somewhere, perhaps it's time to throw young Callum Brown into another game up forward, where he can use his speed and evasion. He's coming to the end of 4 years - if we're to promote him to the main list for next year, we need to see whether he's got what it takes as an AFL forward. Otherwise, O'Halloran is an obviously choice as a versatile player off the bench, but probably leaves us a bit light on forward scoring power (despite his 3 goals in VFL). Cooper Hamilton another option if they want a run-all-day winger/HBF.

Despite his heroics in ruck, Keeffe to make way.

Yeah, I know, this won't be the actual team.

This seems like the perfect time to get games into younger players. I actually think Will Shaw will get a game soon. He doesn’t get a lot of it I know. I just like his run. He’s sharp and can use it well. In a good side he might go alright.

He may not be up to it. But at least we see where he’s at. Nothing to lose, but bits to be gained.

Fair call. There's a few decisions that either must or could be made at the end of this season, so it doesn't hurt to try players out. Our season's done anyway, and one player generally doesn't make a huge difference (except, maybe, the ruckman). Callum Brown similar.

My concerns would be the backline this weekend (nothing new).
Collingwood has 2 fast, small-forwards in Ginnivan and Elliott.
They've got Cameron at 6'9" and Cox at 6'11' so they could easily have one parked in the forward line considering Briggs is the only fit ruck (with Preuss out and Flynn possibly injured).
Our defenders lack speed and we really don't have the 'crumbers' who are good at ground level if the ball hits the deck.
I can also see the ball being kicked high and long onto Cox's head and there's little we can do to stop it.

Might be a week for Hamilton to get a recall, not sure we're going to see De Goey play but Hamilton could play a role on Elliot and try to keep him quiet

Thankfully Cox often drops marks, a bit like Jesse White used to.

I count 15 on that injury list, so a pretty limited list of fit players to choose from.

Preuss, Flynn, MdB, Peatling, Angwin all out.

Lloyd cleared to start training and "available for selection", but surely after 10 weeks out he won't be.

Briggs didn't play due to illness; hopefully he'll be OK by Sunday to play!

I really, really hope we don't keeping selecting Brander - give someone like Cooper Hamilton a run on the wing. Can't be worse.

I'd keep close to what I posted earlier; probably put Whitfield forward and bring Hamilton on the wing. Happy enough to debut Derksen given the totality of circumstances - probably not the smartest move, but give him a taste.

(In reality, I could see us selecting Keeffe to match against Cox, and HH returning forward. Or Keeffe swung forward as secondary ruck, as he's been used before.)

Attempt at a team and not to include Brander if it is possible

Idun Taylor Haynes
Cumming Davis Kennedy
Whitfield Ward Kelly
Bruhn Riccardi Taranto
Greene Hogan XOH
Briggs Coniglio Green

Ash (Mid rotation) Keefe (Fwd/ruck rotation) HH (Def rotation) Wehr (Def/wing rotation) Hamilton Medi sub

Hopefully it can be something like this as I hope they dont go too tall and the versatility of Keefe is important and why he is in over Sproule and Stein

Geez, still hating our selection processes.

Surely Briggs has to play as the only actual ruckman, which means Keeffe is essentially the backup ruckman, so is really the third forward, hence HH is back, hence we don't actually need both Haynes (who's named on field) and Davis. So I'd think Davis won't play.

Hopefully Wehr keeps his spot, Bruhn too - but could he lose it to Taranto (who surely we do bring back into the team)?

And hopefully Brander is just an emergency - understand it's been stated that Derksen was going to Melbourne as an emergency so no chance to be on field except for sickness/injury occurring.

I think Spike has taken a leaf from Sheedy's selection shenanigans. Lloyd doesn't play for 10 weeks yet is straight in but Taranto misses a month and is back through the 2's. I can't see Lloyd playing. Briggs has to play unless there is another reason why he didn't feature in the VFL last week.

So strange seeing Hamilton falling completely out of the side.

He showed more than enough in his two games to warrant another opportunity.

Lloyd straight in is the biggest surprise to me. I suppose it reinforces the value of the defensive forward in the team.
Peatling is Lloyd's obvious successor.
Perhaps Briggs has lingering 'flu effects and this is a conservative selection.
Hamilton, as good as he looked, may have a few things the coaches want him to work on in the 2s.
I would have loved to have seen Callaghan in this team...might be a few more weeks, sadly :(

Phil saying he's playing this week on the podcast so I guess Taranto, Bruhn, Phil and Briggs? Unless Phil being an extra KPD means they're happy to run with a mix of Keefe plus someone else in the ruck and they choose Wehr instead of Briggs but this seems like a great opportunity to give Briggs a game.
