Battle's 2019 numbers were pretty much comparable to his 2023 numbers as a third tall intercept defender. Battle's 3rd season, not yet 21 in the final round. Caminiti is already 21 yrs 192 days old.

I think Caminiti is worth persisting with, but Battle was better at the same age (or younger) and performing a different role. Let's not think Battle was a late developer: he was good as soon as he went into the backline in 2019, then messed around with for two years until he returned there in 2022.

He wasn't that good at defending early days though.

Like hammer he was beaten 1v1 a lot.

Hammer probably takes more intercept marks. Battle was and is a better user

I’d much rather Caminiti even if he is a bit of a walking turnover purely for his size. You can put him on key forwards whereas you couldn’t really do that with Battle, with him it was one panic free kick after another.

Caminiti is still in the "young kid trying to do too much" phase where he takes the game on at the wrong times (like getting caught HTB on the weekend 30 out from goal). This will just come from experience, particularly in refocusing himself to be a defender properly where those kind of risks arent acceptable to take.

Always been an avenue for seconds players to get a few senior games. Their careers don’t tend to be long. Try that rubbish in local footy and see how long you last.

Away games against MCG tenants the last decade:



One out of six against Carlton
Three out of six against Collingwood (one in an empty stadium)
One out of six against Hawthorn
Four out of seven against Melbourne
And an away game at Marvel against Richmond

Five interstate teams (Adelaide, Brisbane, Fremantle, Port Adelaide, Sydney) have a more recent MCG away match against Essendon than us.

We don't get scheduled at the MCG enough regardless of home games there.

I’ve been absolutely stoked with Hammer’s season. I honestly reckon he’s surpassed Doug already - less brain fades, better overheard, more pace, closing speed, and more often than not plays within his limits which will only get better.

I think he physically matches Howard now but lacks the defensive attitude that Howard has as a 29yo defender.

But otherwise agreed, I think he has exceeded expectations as a key defender and he has a lot of improvement in him.

And that's the age comparison that works better for Caminiti - at the same age Dougal Howard had played 10 AFL games. Caminiti has played 47.

Giants reject is a bit harsh. They didn't want to let him go and some of The Oranje would probably take him back now (for nothing).

I've never been a huge fan, but I'd say in a good team he'd probably be 3rd or 4th mid, like Andrew Thompson used to be for us, and in a premiership team probably on the fringe. And yes I did use to say exactly the same about Seb Ross. We have been excellent at drafting that grade of player, the 2nd rung, the guys that smash the VFL then come back and have serviceable games in the seniors. We have been unable to find the top level players that the guys we picked would be supporting, and that's why we are where we are.

Yeah, that "reject" quip was probably a bit harsh on Steele. I don't dislike him, he's a heart & soul player & has probably played with various injuries over his career so far.

Odd for King to back pedal this much. He did go way heavy on the Windhager hate so perhaps he realized it really wasnt that big an issue and went too far.

Its a good point though, Windy is the best tagger in the comp at the moment and his strength is being usually able to also impact the game whist nullifying his opponent. He didnt really accomplish that well this game even though I think Daicos' impact is being exaggerated.

A very maligned player by most on here...

I don't think much of him, as a player, myself but I'm kinda disturbed about the amount of HATE bestowed on him from many on this forum.

He's a dump f*ck... a panic merchant... He's our peanut player. Our monkey... we pay him **** all but we get more for our money than we do with many other players on our list.

I heard, a couple of years ago, that Brad Hill was the Saints highest paid player... Probably BS, I dunno but I reckon Bynes is better value for money than many on our list.

Give the campaigner a break... he's not our worst by any parameter.

I’d say that was disgracefully disrespectful.
To any player, let alone a 2x AA, 2x TB medallist and captain of our club - no matter how he is going right now.

I think he watched it for the opposite reason - to try and get more ammunition to hang Windy out to dry. Otherwise why watch an entire game just watching that duel?

Having said that, I think in the cold light of day he did see that it wasn’t quite as bad as he thought, and good for him for having the guts to pull it back a bit. He really went hard initially.

Still, it’s probably put a target on Windy from the umps from now on.
