PREVIEW

Let's start with this:

Jeremy Cameron got five weeks for this hit on Harris Andrews, but that wasn't the end of the story, because many of us believe we still have unfinished business with GWS. We haven't beaten Greater Western Sydney since Round 21, 2013 and this Sunday we have an opportunity to not only rectify that situation, but to give Jeremy Cameron a little payback where it counts, on the scoreboard.

When we last played GWS we had only won one game and while we were showing glimpses of promise, many were expecting that we still had a few years to go before we were truly competitive again. Well haven't times changed. The LID HAS COME OFF in 2019 and the Brisbane Lions are serious finals contenders again. This week against GWS we are going to announce to the AFL Public that we have well and truly arrived.

The difference this year has been our midfield depth, with Lachie Neale, Dayne Zorko, Jarryd Lyons, Hugh McCluggage, Jarrod Berry and Mitch Robinson in stellar form. Lachie Neale and Dayne Zorko, in particular have been incredible, with Brisbane the only club to have two players in the AFL Top Ten Player Rankings, with Neale ranked at 7th and Zorko 9th.This is where we are going to win the game against GWS, because our midfield is a more cohesive and hard at it unit. There is no room for complacency, because GWS has a good midfield, with Taylor, Coniglio, Kelly, Reid and Hopper all capable of getting hold of the ball. GWS average 40.5 clearances, per game against our 39.6, but it is in the tackling department that we hold sway and this is where I expect us to win, not only in the midfield, but all over the ground. Dayne Zorko is second in the competition for tackles and Brisbane leads the competition for tackles Inside 50. Put simply, I expect us to out muscle GWS. Look at our midfield tackle count against Melbourne. Zorko, Lyons, Neale, McCluggage and Martin had 27 tackles between them. We definitely have to have the best and most inform midfield in the competition. Check out their awesome performance against Melbourne:

Around the ground, I see winners on every line. Our defence has really come of age this year, with Darcy Gardiner, in particular proving to be one of the most reliable and underrated players in the competition. We all know how great Harris Andrews is, but add to that the football genius of Luke Hodge, Ryan Lester’s true grit, the speed of Noah Answerth and the composure of Zac Bailey and we are starting to look very formidable. As discussed elsewhere, don't be surprised to see Cam Rayner bolting out of defense too this week.

Credit to Chris Fagan because our defenders seem more willing to take the game on and run the ball out of defence down the centre corridor and I expect to see plenty of this on the weekend.

The midfield has been discussed, but it is in attack that we need to improve and this week we are all hoping for a team effort. Selection has been a vexed issue on our board this year, so I am going to leave that alone, but it is fair to say we need more than one of our key forwards to step up if we are to kick a winning score. Charlie Cameron and Eric Hipwood seem to take it in turns, which is not surprising, particularly given the tag that goes on to Cameron each week, but this week we are all hoping they both RUN RIOT! Lincoln McCarthy has been a gun for us all year and he also has the ability to push up into the midfield to help out. McCarthy is a complete footballer and an amazing addition to our list. A revitalized Alan Christensen is another massive plus for us. If we can get a little more out of whoever is at Full Forward, I can see us really cashing in on our midfield dominance. It goes without saying, but I will say it anyway, we also need to kick straight.

At this stage it appears that THE BIG O is going to be an out and you would expect Witherden to return, but other than that, I will leave team selection to Fagan.

In closing, this is the sort of a game that the boys have been looking forward to. Going in as 'underdogs' is going to suit us just fine and if there are any LIDS STILL ON before this one, expect them to be OBLITERATED after we bring home the points.

BRISBANE TO WIN THIS GAME BY 32 POINTS

P.S. Daniel Rich -
in stunning form. He seems to be growing in confidence and significance to our team every week. His tackling was inspirational against Melbourne and he is playing in career best form. Having players around him who are performing well has freed him up and he is enjoying a real renaissance as a player. He presents a challenge to GWS, because if they can’t tag him, his trusty left boot is going to carve them up. Rich has taken all aspects of his game to a new level.

Huge game. If we win this we might even warrant a mention on AFL 360 and Footy Classified on a Monday night. Absolutely infuriating how our rise is being ignored in the media. Compare that to the 30 minutes a night they dedicated to fawning over the Dogs in 2017. I get it, we arn;t Melbourne eetc, but really - this is one of the stories of the year if you think about our last 10 years and we barely rate a mention.

With O unlikely to get up without massive risk, it'll be an interesting selection table.

If we stick with 3 talls - I'd hope to see Wooller get the call up for his debut, and see McStay rotate through the ruck. For goodness sake, I really hope we don't try Martin/Smith dual rucking again.
If we run a 2 tall forward line, then it could be as simple as a straight swap Witho for Oscar. We have the cattle to rotate the extra through the forward line, and we've seen a few more forwards and backs starting to be given a shot at the wing/mid role (cameron, rayner, Mccarthy from forwards. Answerth, Bailey from the backs).

This game will be very interesting to watch. Looking forward to it.

Two key questions for me -

1. Can we bring our pressure game to Sydney?

It’s hard to see us succeeding without dominating the territory battle. In the first half on Sunday we made it far too easy for the Dees to move through the corridor, and we will need to bring the heat for 4 quarters to succeed against the Giants midfield and stop their run out of defence.

2. What do we do in the ruck?
This could be a big big advantage to us as Mummy is wel out of form and unfit and Stef should be able to kill him around the ground. I’d avoid taking two specialist rucks in with Big O a likely out and instead opt for more run to match it with the Giants.

The giants are a much higher uncontested mark team than us which is an interesting contrast in styles. If we can slow down this and force them to go long and slow down the line I feel good about our ability to control the air - while the giants have 3 quality talls none of them are exactly contested marking beasts (Himmelberg is decent). If the ball movement is fast and they can hit up leads inside 50 we will struggle.

First hands on the ball is the key and I think we have the players who can deliver. We know Neale and Zorko are ELITE, but I just watched the Melbourne game for the third time and Lyons was PHENOMENAL! He was channeling Simon Black against Melbourne. Let’s hope he can do it again!

We've got a fair bit of positive media coverage this season, in fact more than most, On The Couch in particular we are regular features, got a good few minutes last night, the bigger stories this week are Carlton winning, Pies and Port losing, caretaker coaches, Majak coming back, in fact last night on 360 they had to apologise for not talking about the Dogs.

I prefer flying under the radar. Keep the young boys away from the hype and pounce when they least expect it.

Lachie and Zorks would be happy that DeBoer is on the sidelines. A big loss for them IMO. I find it hard to hate GWS as they allowed us to draft our first preference in Clugga and throw in Bez as a little cherry on top for free with pick 16.
Edit: I can still hate them as Dirty Dog Cameron plays for them!

3KZ you forgot about Rich in the backline.. I say he is AA form been super solid.

If we bring our A game I think 20 points the margin.
Wonder who kicks 3-5 this week.. Maybe McStays turn he done a few 2's only
They be keeping an eye on Charlie and Eric so McStay or Rayner could be off the leash. Linc seems to be getting more mid minutes now

Nice summary 3KZ. Hope your prediction comes true. For me if we win 1 of our next 2 away games against the Giants & Port, i will be a happy chappy.

The AFL has scheduled the Lions to play 8 games in the 3.20 pm to 4.40 pm time slot plus round 23 is TBC. So far we have played 4. We have won 3 Swans,Saints,Melbourne with the only loss to the Dockers by 1 point. The upcoming 4 are against the Giants (A), Port (A), Bulldogs (H), Suns(H) plus round 23 ??. Lets hope our win/loss ratio at this time slot continues.

I think the Club will/should rest the Big O. If they do i would much prefer Walker over Archie as he is more versatile being a Forward/Defender. I am sure they will pick the best match up to play against the Giants.

Like most games if your midfield get's on top it will go a long way to deciding the result. Should be a great battle- our guys verses Mumford,Kelly,Coniglio,Taranto and Hopper. Another good test to see if we belong in the eight.

Agree Daniels Riches that DeBoer is a big loss for them. Hopefully they don't bring anyone else in to do a hard tag on one of ours.

Have a feeling we might get the Saturday night game. Collingwood and Essendon should have a mortgage on the Friday night game with two Victorian clubs, both potentially still finals relevant, but we've got a big Victorian club and both teams probably finals relevant..

Here's hoping, will be in Melbourne that weekend with the family and Saturday night at the G works perfectly to take the family.

Just added a P.S. - I had to pick my eldest son up from tennis and was writing against the clock. Rectified the oversight.

The pressure is off for this game, it's a free punch at a top team away from home. For what feels like the first time in a month, we are the underdogs.

GWS at home are different to GWS away, where they are very vulnerable. I still feel like we have the fire power to match them and if we bring intensity, we can put up a solid fight. We can't be careless with the ball though, they'll punish us severly.

This could be a season defining game if we win, it'll put us firmly in the top 4 and announce to the competition we have arrived as a FLAG contender.

Lions by 15 in a close tussle. We have arrived.

If we lose this one no big deal. My main concern is getting flogged
The closest margin in any game between the clubs was almost five goals. The average margin is almost ten goals. They basically jumped straight from being flogged by us to flogging us.

Why can’t we win the flag this year? If I was a betting man, I’d have a few bob on us.
I feel like if we win this game then we can set our sights on giving it a red hot crack. A win this weekend would open a shot at top 4 and anyone finishing with a double chance in finals is a serious premiership contender. Yes, every one of us has done our ladder predictor and can see that we can qualify for finals by droping this week and next week. But win it and: Game on!
