Autopsy Round 16, 2025: Positives and Negatives vs Collingwood

Your missus is so lucky to have you mansplaining shit to her all game.

LoL I was thinking the same thing. Guarantee she's replying with "okay babes" and rolling her eyes.

My concern is I don't know if it will be possible to sustain this game style to the point where we decimate shit sides and consistently compete against top sides in finals/GFs. Obviously it is early days but I worry that it is a game style where a) you need to be very very fit to do it all game and b) any skill errors mean you are completely exposed going the other way.
It's also year 1. See my comment above. The likes of Collingwood and Geelong have multiple gears because they have experience behind them. We're just starting to have our first game style stick, with most of that being focused on the midfield and half back lines. It will be really interesting to see how Mini layers the game plan over the next few years.

Harley had a game to forget but the umpiring of him is so very biased it's incredible.
In fairness to Harley, he was lined up on Daicos. I thought Harley did alright.

Hard to do when you're infringed at every contest and the umps ignore it though.
He's just got to get used to that unfortunately

It was from either his draft profile or a past coach that said he has an ability to adapt and excel at new roles and challenges. From not playing footy, to moving up levels and changing positions he's always made adjustments and done well. The guy is a mixture of talent and work ethic and I'm really hoping that this midfield role works out for him.
I think there is still a world where he and Ginbey swap positions again some time in the future but Hough looks really comfortable in the middle and complements Harley, Hewett, Ryan, etc. really nicely.

We're also an incredibly unfit side full of either lazy old kents or 18 year olds compared to most AFL sides, so it's hard to judge the difficulty of the gameplan when you have blokes like Kelly walking around or a 10 gamer learning the ropes.

maybe you are worried that if it is sustainable, you will die from exhaustion watching this high octane game style. Have to admit, there is high risk of stroke or heart attack. Unlike kick and mark gamestyle, it does not allow anyone to catch their breath.

it will stand up because there are no gimmicks with the gamestyle. it requires opposition to maintain concentration, intensity, pressure and positioning to cut it off. Old Richmond game style never got defeated, they just got old. yes it has it risks but end of day its about doing it better for longer than opposition.

Not sure if anyone saw one of those Federer speeches but he said in his career, he only won 54% of points. it's all about being slightly better than anyone else.

Biggest positive is that the club took it up to the ladder leaders away from home and kept grinding it out. Even once they knew it was no longer winnable.

Jobby Shanahands will be an elite KPF. Clubs go decades without finding KPF of that level. He outbodied and outpositioned Darcy Moore on at least 3 occasions. Sure he tired but he's 18 years old, unreal.

Brady Hough has me questioning my ability to judge talent. That was some performance as a midfielder. It seems no matter what role we give him he just rises to the level. He is still an elite shutdown defender but he could well be a Redden level or a touch higher mid. What to do....

Bar 1 mistake I thought Edwards was absolutely superb. I really didn't think he had close to this level in him and he just keeps building.

On a night when Reid & Hewett weren't as effective as they have been in some of our better games others stood up. Makes a huge difference.

McCarthy is like a free first round draft pick, who just happens to be 24 and entering his prime. 24 months ago was playing Div 2 amateurs........

Jack Williams if he had of kicked straight would have had an outstanding game.

Negatives:

Will leave the negatives alone this week, I think that was the best all round team performance of the year.
100% agree

Something to really think about when you look at teams around us

Lets look at last nights midfield rotiation here

Clay Hall - 20
Elijah Hewett - 21
Harley Reid - 20
Brady Hough - 22
Ryan Maric - 20
Jack Hutchinson - 23

And then rotational pieces

Bo Allan - 19
Liam Ryan - 28
Tyler Brockman - 22

Have we ever seen such a young midfield like ever? Even GWS had Ward/McDonald and the like when they first came in...

Richmond for example have Taranto (28), Hopper (28), McIntosh (31), Prestia (32), Ralpsmith (24), Jack Ross (24), Tyler Sonsie (22) and that includes a much better ruck in Nankervis too

I think we are pushing towards the right direction
totally unbelievable how we are competing so well, well done to those players you mentioned and coaches for putting the pieces together for us to compete

Cole and Owies back soon, then Yeo later - maybe the Derby.
Presumably Cole and Owies have to work back through the Wafl.
Owies is a similar type to Cripps, albeit less accurate (a stat defied by his last year at Carlton). If he can improve on that, would be handy with his pressure, as Cripps seems to be on the slide. But Cripps is a mercurial player, often bobs up for 1-2 goals a game.

Yeo, of course will be a welcome inclusion and be great to see his impact on the game, if only to free up Harley and guide him. Would like to see more of Allan and Hall, get them settled at AFL level. If Hall can be a solid consistent player with defensive run, it's a win.
Still got Long, Dewar, Chesser, Gross, Grego, Champion, Davis, Bazzo, AReid..and Jacob Newton.
Will we see these guys get a game before season's end?
Interested to see what Newton offers! Gone missing...
(I don't know enough about Rawlinson, Livingstone, Jamieson, Barnett)

Needs to stay in and not as the sub.

Strikes me as a player who grinds and builds through games and can hopefully accumulate. His pressure and tackling adds up accross 4 quarters.

And play him on ball in the action, not wing.
Agree, he adds so much to the midfield and will do all the dirty work in the clinches. Tough, combative and runs all day long.

Just prone to the odd poor kick, but what he adds outweighs the occasional poor kick.

Mini finally going to enquire about the umpiring 🍆

Very pleasing game. Desperately hoping the boys get another dub or two shortly for reward for effort. They're putting in a huge shift more often than not lately, and clearly we needed the break. We play best against the best teams so need to put it all together against a couple of lowly ranked sides and notch wins to reaffirm the whole setup.

Hough has lateral movement like Shuey had, maybe not quite as much but he's the best of our mids at making his own space moving sideways.

I feel like Ryan should be a bit better at this but often tries to use his speed instead and just gets tackled by the jumper, close but not quite breaking out.
Yea agree with that.
It what makes me so excited about Koby Evans he has that lateral movement and amazing side step too.
It something we are missing like you said.
Also need a mid with great endurance as well someone that can power to every contest

About time

Really strange call from Mini and the club, disappointing honestly.

Umpiring is an impossibly difficult job. And yet, week after week, they nail it. Especially this year. The AFL even said it's the best it's ever been. And why would they lie?

If anything, the real issue here is the fans. The umpires aren't the problem. They’re the solution. They are football. They are truth. We’re lucky just to witness them.

hope your right, shame he got injured at the wrong time as he has that class also.
maybe our win with him slipping further back in the draft.
