Ladder after Round 16
Southern Dragons put one hand on the minor premiership with another win in Round 16, this time acounting for the Demons at Mount Buller. The Dragons cruised through the last quarter but still finished well ahead of the Demons to win quite comfortably and have now raced to a three game lead over the rest of the competition and with five games remaining that lead is just about too much for the rest of the competition to make up. West Coast Wonders remain second but yet another loss would have a lot of people in the club looking a little concerned. The Wonders have hit a real form slump and have only won one of their last seven games with their percentage falling rapidly during that period. They've got to ressurect things otherwise they will be swallowed up by the teams below them.
The Furies blew another opportunity to move into second and they stay third tonight after losing to the Baghdad Bombers. Their percentage is now a worry too with their percentage significantly lower than the Hawks and the Wonders. Speaking of the Hawks, they stay fourth but have rocketed right into contention for a top two finish with their win this evening. Not long ago they were last but a remarkable change of fortune sees them well inside the top five and challenging the Furies and Wonders for ladder position.
The Mod Squad cling to fifth place but only just after yet another loss. The men in blue and green have been struggling of late and really need to get back to basics to stop the form slide they are in. The gap between them and the next two sides is less than a game and another loss next week could see them slip out of the top five.
Baghdad Bombers sit in the sixth spot but have moved right into contention for the top five with a good, tight win over the Furies. They are now less than one game behind the Mod Squad are are a big chance to play finals football. Geelong Gumbies are in a much similar position, they are in seventh position but a good win over the Mods saw them creep up to the blue and green men on the ladder and like the Bombers are less then one game behind them and now have a good chance at making the finals as well.
Mount Buller Demons are now well and truly last, sitting ten points behind the Gumbies after succumbing to another loss, this time to Southern Dragons. Finals footy is all but over now for the Dees and they are now strong favourites to win the dreaded wooden spoon. They now have five weeks to get something out of what has been a disappointing 2009.
So, five rounds left and the race for second is becoming a tight one as is the race for fifth with three sides within a game of each other. There's still plenty of footy left so we may not have seen all the surprises that this season has thrown up so far.
