Brisbane Lions (3rd, 10-4) vs. Western Bulldogs (8th, 8-6)
Round 16

MATCH PREVIEW

‘Pretenders’… It has been a term thrown about a lot this week. Round 15 of the 2022 Home & Away Season will simultaneously be forever written down in infamy and be one that Lions fans will hope to forget. After coming up against the Melbourne Demons in a ‘top of the table blockbuster’, the Lions bowed out with a whimper, being bludgeoned by 64 points at the MCG. The putrid performance left many members of the maroon, blue and gold army throwing in their scarves and ripping up their membership cards, seemingly calling time on 2022. Others have remained steadfast with the Brisbane boys, eager to earn another shot at redemption. Who will be proven right?

One thing is for sure, in Australian Rules Football, there is always another week. Whether you are the victor or the loser, there is always another opportunity to show the competition what you are made of. What will this opportunity reveal in Round 16?

The Brisbane Lions will be desperate to make up for last week with a solid win against the Western Bulldogs in front of their hometown fans. The Lions can get the airy-fairy stuff right this year showing potent scoring power and forcing turnovers. However, last week they simply got beat in the simplistic part of the game, contested football. After seeing solid seasons from the likes of Lachie Neale, Joe Daniher and Hugh McCluggage, almost the entire Lions’ side got their colours lowered last week. The Brisbane Lions would love to get their season back on track by getting some revenge on the Bulldogs side that mercilessly brought their season to end in last year’s semi-final.

For the Western Bulldogs, their shot at redemption has been more of a slow boil than the scolding burn of the Brisbane Lions. The 2021 runners-up were touted by many pundits to go one better in 2022 but suffered a slow start at the beginning of the season (2-4). To their credit, the Dogs have strung some solid wins together, winning four of their last five matches. Luke Beveridge’s side still boasts one of the most talented lists in the competition, especially in the midfield, ranking with the top sides in ‘points from stoppage differential’. However, the Bulldogs’ defence has let them down, ranking in the lowest ebbs for one-on-one losses. With some injuries to key players, the Bulldogs are perhaps doing well to be clawing their way back up into the top eight. How better to stake their claim in making a top eight spot permanent than by serving the Brisbane Lions a heart-breaking loss on their home deck?

LAST TIME THEY MET

The last time these two teams met was at the Gabba on Saturday, September 4th, 2021.

This pulsating final had everything and kept it up all the way to the final minute. The Lions kicked out to an 11-point lead at quarter time with Charlie Cameron kicking three goals in the first quarter on former-Footscray skipper Easton Wood. The match was a see-saw affair from there. The wiggle worm score line jumped all over the page as neither team could claim dominance. After trailing at half time, the Lions entered the fourth quarter with a 10-point lead. Hugh McCluggage was best-on-ground for the Brisbane Lions with 28 disposals, 1 goal and 2 goal assists. Jarryd Lyons, Dayne Zorko and Mitch Robinson were also serviceable.

However, it would end in heartbreak for the Brisbane Lions. Jack Macrae proved too damaging, racking up 39 disposals (19 contested). Zac Bailey evened up the score with only minutes left, but a Lions’ win was not meant to be, with Laitham Vandermeer scoring a behind with only seconds remaining. The Western Bulldogs would go on to win by only a point, with their conversion Inside 50 being the main difference between the two sides.

ROUND 15 REVIEW

The whole nation sat and watched the Brisbane Lions drop the ball against the Melbourne Demons on Thursday night, putting together one of their worst ever performances. After winning the first quarter, the Lions went unsighted, being smashed all over the ground in a dismal affair. Hugh McCluggage was the highest-rated Lion, with 27 disposals, but many of these were largely ineffectual under tight pressure. Oscar McInerney was dominant in the ruck with 29 hit outs, however the Lions midfield were well beaten on the night (170-132 contested possessions). In the end, the Lions lost by 64 points.

The Western Bulldogs easily took care of Hawthorn at Marvel Stadium on Fright night. After trailing for the majority of the first half, the Bulldogs came to life and romped home, keeping Hawthorn scoreless in the 3rd quarter. The 4th quarter was a tighter contest, but in the end, the Bulldogs won by 42 points. Marcus Bontempelli was the highest-rated Bulldog with 27 disposals, 1.2 scoring and 7 tackles. Aaron Naughton was strong up forward, kicking 3 goals.

TALKING POINTS

1. Where to from here?

For many Lions fans, last week was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Unfortunately, Chris Fagen’s group are developing a poor reputation in their big-time performances. Many Brisbane-faithful will wake up in cold sweats from memories such as the lack of an Alex Witherden chase-down tackle against GWS in the dying minutes, a total capitulation against Geelong during a Gabba finals series, a last-minute one-point death at the hands of the Bulldogs, and now the public execution against Melbourne. The Brisbane Lions have done well to pull themselves from the familiar bottom of the ladder, that is unarguable. However, will this successful period forever lack a crowning achievement? Will it be doomed for a chorus of “should haves”, “would haves” and “could haves”? Even a solid victory on Thursday night will not be enough for some. Let us wait and see what this group can provide away from home at the pointy end of the season.

2. Is the time for the ‘Big Three’ forward experimentation to be over?

As the Bulldogs have a wealth of talent in the midfield, the same could be said for the Lion’s forward line. A forward line comprising of Eric Hipwood, Daniel McStay and Joe Daniher should spell danger for the rest of the competition. However, all is not well in the Brisbane forward 50. With the addition of Darcy Fort and the re-entry of Eric Hipwood from an ACL injury, Chris Fagen has a puzzling jigsaw at the selection table. It is fair to say that the full line-up has not gelled so far in 2022, with Dan McStay being pushed to the ruck and wing last week against Melbourne. Is a deep forward line with Hipwood, Daniher and McStay too tall? Can the Big-O ruck all on his own for an entire match? Is using one of the Big Three as a ruck relief undermining their form as a forward? All of these questions remained unanswered going into Thursday night. You would hope that they are fixed by finals.

3. Contested ball

Both sides seemingly suffer from multiple-personality disorder in 2022. On paper, the Lions and the Bulldogs are both midfield powerhouses. After a slow start, the Bulldogs are beginning to resemble the outfit the saw them to the Grand Final last year. Tom Liberatore had a career-day against Hawthorn, earning 30 disposal and 11 clearances. Liberatore is currently averaging a career-high 24.4 disposals and 6.7 clearances. The Brisbane Lions however are Jekyll and Hyde in the midfield. The Lions have Brownlow-favourite Lachie Neale averaging 31.6 disposals, to go along with forever-improving Hugh McCluggage and ‘Mr. Reliable’ Jarryd Lyons. Thursday night will be won and lost in this midfield struggle.

IT'S A BIG GAME FOR...

Zac Bailey

After an elite start to the season, Zac Bailey has hit a form slump in the last month. This slump was capped off with Bailey missing last week with COVID protocol. Although he cannot be blamed for this outage, it would be frustrating for the Lions’ half-forward who would have been wanting to put his skills to the test against the competitions’ best. The Lions similarly missed his usual spark in the engine room. With stories being leaked about Bailey falling asleep in team meetings from late-night Fortnite sessions, fans could be forgiven in wondering whether Bailey will indeed take that next step professionally. It would be huge if Bailey returned with an All-Australian performance against the Bulldogs.

LINEUP CHANGES

Chris Fagen has all but confirmed that Dayne Zorko will return against the Bulldogs on Thursday night. Zac Bailey and Darcy Gardiner should also be fit and ready for selection.

Dary Fort, Callum Ah Chee and Rhys Matheison could also be pushing for selection. Expect to see Jack Payne, Tom Berry and Jimmy Tunstill make way for the returning Lions.

PREDICTION

The Brisbane Lions will come out firing in the 2002 Premiership Anniversary Jerseys, eager to make up for last week’s performance. Possible inaccuracy or Bulldog’s class will claw this game back to an arm wrestle. The Brisbane Lions will run out of petrol tickets and will unfortunately suffer a similar fate to last year’s semi-final.

Massive game for us .

The challenge will be for the coaches (and the psychologists) to get the players heads rights after such a demoralising loss to the Dees last week.

If I were addressing the players, I'd be telling them that we/they couldn't play any worse than they did against Melbourne and at the same time , the Dees couldn't have played any better.

So the entire focus should be on how we can overcome this opponent, this week.

I firmly believe that given a full strength (or near full strength) side , we can roll the Dogs on our home patch.

We went into the SF against the Dogs last season with some crucial injury omissions and in the end, we lost by the smallest possible margin with the Dogs getting a golden run from the umps at several crucial points of the game, Bailey Smith (who is not playing) pulling a goal out of his arse near the death and despite us looking like the better side for most of the game.

I'm hoping that if the scores are level with a minute to play, that this time an umpire will pay a technical free to us at the centre square instead of pulling a "block" call like he did against Oscar that ultimately led to the winning rushed behind being registered by the Dogs in that Semi loss last season.

I still have nightmares about that call, as I do about the Semi we lost against GWS in 2019 when Mummy threw the most blatantly obvious rugby pass of the season to Daniel who scooted away and (of course) kicked a magical goal to sink us and win GWS the game. Somehow all three umpires missed it, despite every one else at the ground and 15 TV cameras showing it clearly.

Oh well

Come on Lions!!!!

Horrible content but unfortunately it's all true.

We are proven folders under pressure ATM. Do our players have a backbone?!!

I hope they are all reading every word we and everyone else is writing and are super pissed and want to tell us to shove our opinions where the sun don't shine.

TELL US ON FIELD GUYS. THAT'S THE ONLY LANGUAGE THAT MEANS SOMETHING TO US.

Rhys Mathieson continued his prolific form, collecting 43 disposals and two goals in a busy outing while Fort was best-on-ground in his first VFL game for Brisbane.

The 28-year-old was dominant in the air and impressed with his follow up work in the contest, finishing with 24 hitouts, 20 disposals, 9 marks and two goals. - Lions Website

It is a sign of injuries and how badly Fagan got it wrong against Melbourne that we are in a position where we need to make so many changes

In: Zorko, Bailey, Ah Chee, Fort, Mathieson, Prior and Lester.

Out: T.Berry, Tunstill, Robinson, Lyons, Answerth, Payne and McStay

The nonsense that Fagan was spouting at his presser about giving the players a “Mulligan” is going to come back and bite him if he gets it so wrong again. Supporters have been giving him a “Mulligan” in the last three finals series and time is just about up. Fagan is proving to be a failure as a big occasion coach. Out in “straight sets” in two final series and a 1-5 finals record is not good enough. As a club we just do not have enough runs on the board when it comes to “CHARACTER WINS” on the big stage, hence our reputation as the “down hill skiers” of the AFL. My son’s tennis coach, before he knew I was a Lions supporter, put it quite succinctly yesterday when he said, “geez how mentally weak are Brisbane?” I told him I was a Lions supporter and he apologised, but I told him he didn’t have to, because he was right.”
It’s over to you now Fagan. How about this week you reward consistent form in the reserves, recognise the early season form of Ah Chee and Prior and DON’T SELECT A FIRST OR SECOND GAMER. We haven’t reached the ‘play the kids’ stage yet. Finally, get rid of Justin Leppitsch’s game plan, it didn’t work for him and it didn’t work against Melbourne.

The Gabba

The last time these two teams met was a day game at the Gabba on Saturday, September 4th, 2021.

This pulsating final had everything and kept it up all the way to the final minute. The Lions kicked out to an 11-point lead at quarter time with Charlie Cameron kicking three goals in the first quarter on Footscray skipper Easton Wood.

Many Brisbane-faithful will wake up in cold sweats from memories such as the lack of a Alex Witherden chase-down tackle against GWS in the dying minutes, a total capitulation against Geelong during a Gabba finals series, a last-minute one-point death at the hands of the Bulldogs, and now the public execution against Melbourne.

2. Is the time for the ‘Big Three’ forward experimentation over?

Western Bulldogs will win by 11

Many thanks for that great write up btw Liam.

This game doesn't stress me at all. If we're not good enough and get done then we can be comfortable that all the talk about our list reaching its peak this year and over the next couple was probably a pipedream and we need to rebuild on what we have.

If we win convincingly or otherwise then perhaps we're still a hope of at least some joy in September.

Our expectations have been lowered so any disappointment won't cut as deep. I'd like to see the team sheets because the team that turned up last Thursday wouldn't beat anybody. Surely the guys have been given a big enough wake up call to throw everything at it this week.

Lions by 9.

I can see a lot of common sense in what you say there 3KZ .At least we know where you stand.

After what Fages said in the Presser this is a huge match for him.

Exactly, and thanks - that was my OP and I’m only going to say it once.

If McStay goes and it certainly looks like he will, based on Collingwood’s offer, we may as well drop him and sort out a new forward set up. He did nothing against Melbourne and has had more “chances” than a game of monopoly.

First Crack, and King had a crack at Rayner being a lazy defensive runner, and not being accountable for his man.

Really could have highlighted every player in our midfield.

The game against Melbourne felt like losing a final. Usually when that happens, the pre season beckons. Thankfully, it's June. We have had the wake up call. Do we answer?

Any other best 22 players you want to drop just in case they don't become one club players? If we keep screwing him around, Dev might request a trade too. So let's drop him too.

It's not looking great based on last week, but we're still a top 4 team. Have to try to win the premiership now. Not trying to would just be silly.

Long way away from getting to a Grand final on current form, let alone winning one.

The foundations to get close to win one currently is mad 2-way gut running and having a midfield that can win the contest consistently at center bounce. Having a good forward line to finish the work comes third on the list for me. We have 3rd on top and lacking in other two. Carlton I believe have caught up quickly because they're elite in middle, have good overlap running game plan and decent forward line.

We need to adjust quickly to get close or will be a finals doormat once again.

I dont disagree with you particularly but I can always remind you how many finals you can win in June. 3KZ wants us to drop McStay if we think he's going. He's still an employee and for 6 months, just chuck him a couple hundred k to not play.

We sucked on Thursday. No doubt. But look back the previous non-bye, and Melbourne were on 2 straight losses and facing the Pies. And dropped it convincingly. Reckon they should drop Luke Jackson because he might not be there? Write off the season, mini-rebuild?

At the end of the day, we need 3 good games (top 4 assumed). Win 3 games in September and you're done. It's not impossible to play poorly now and psych yourself for September. Bit early to write us off altogether and plan a rebuild.

Yep I want to believe too but the approach we've taken earlier this season, glazing over mediocre outputs from certain players - I worry if it has taken a bit of foothold within the team now. "I can have a bad game but that's ok, I'll still get picked" seems to be a concerning trend.
Coach may have a preferred 22 but s**t happens and players go out of form. Needed to take hard decisions at that point which I don't think Fagan has managed to do so far. Closest he came was trying to move past Mitch Robinson but had to turn back on that too eventually.
It feels like we tried to settle on best 22 very early in the season and play a core style that the whole world knows. Not sure where to go from here.

If it were tucked away on a Saturday arvo amougst 3 other games I’d say Lions by 25 at the Gabba.

Given it’s a Thursday night, it will be billed as ‘match of the round’ and we have a significant spot light on us (with our backs to the wall after last week) I think Dogs by 15.

First Crack, and King had a crack at Rayner being a lazy defensive runner, and not being accountable for his man.

Really could have highlighted every player in our midfield.

Rayner was in focus but it still highlighted others. That passage was right in front of me and it was the moment I thought ‘nup these blokes just don’t care’. From that point on I was just cranky.

AFL... can you please provide 3 umpires that are able to ID a throw n r brave enough to call it.
The horse has bolted on this one , all teams throw now , these soft touches by the back of the hand barely touching the ball while all the momentum is generated with the holding arm/hand, is the pinacle of being so obviously wrong by the letter of the law, and worse the comentators froth over it. Big overhaul by the afl at the end of the season is now required, but there will be little done I suspect.
On this game.
A few of our players need to play their best to date year game to get us a win, get on the front foot and move.
Still dissapointed from last Thursday, so anything less than a 4 quarter effort with our best pressure is a failure.
Also we need to play on if there is a player in a better position and is easy safe kick, that would be a positive step to making the Bulldogs backpedal, not hold the footy up and then go down the line.
Our transition out of defense has to be on and precise , which is our weakness in comparison to most teams.
Kiddy and Rich will maybe be bolsted with Zorks in that process so that gives me confidence .

Bottom line is the same as everygame , the boys need to spread and run when in attack and defence.
In particular expecting Andrews to start getting a grasp of the game, if not have a rest and Payne can have his position.
That's controversial but I'm getting a little tired of watching the sooks out there. Maybe bring in Lester and he can run the ship back there, take the pressure off Andrews.
Show us some fight Lions .
