The big concern for me going into the game is our forward line. We just need some guys to step up and kick goals. Hard to see how we kick a score to win this unless we keep them to around 60 points.

We need some of Butler, King, even Membrey to step up and really influence a game, kicking 3+
That's our big problem and even against teams who were not in top form in the Tigers and Pies, we couldn't kick a big score.

Our two top goal scorers have kicked one more goal than Josh Bruce combined and 6 less than McKay. Our third highest who has been leading our goal kicking all year has just been injured and replaced with a mid. We are playing short down back as well. We are going to have to control the midfield to even get a chance at a win.

Just noticed we are on the bottom of the comp for marks taken inside 50 since Round 13- could explain lack of goals.

I think there's a few issues with the forwards:

1. King is still growing, I think it's really noticeable at the games that he's fairly skinny. He is being asked to be the main man and he doesn't have the body or experience yet to do that. I still think he will be scary in a couple of years and this experience will most likely help him. Hopefully with Marshall back playing full minutes he will get better. But the thought of Harris Andrews on him is a bit scary.
2. Butler's form has dropped considerably, most notably he isn't kicking goals. His pressure is good but he is missing easy shots, although generally getting opportunities. I think there's a feeling around that it will click eventually for him but it hasn't happened yet.
3. Membrey playing swingman role. He used to be good for the odd bag but I think it's hard for him to kick big bags when he is all over the ground (and doing it bloody well).
4. No one in reserve. No one in the 2s is beating the door down and kicking bags of goals. Fairly handy for Melbourne to have a bloke like Ben Brown running around in the 2s!

We have lost Higgins this week so we've gone from having Lonie/Butler/Higgins to just Butler. I guess Long will play a similar pressure role, and maybe Byrnes will go up there. Both might be good for a couple of goals but I don't see them kicking a bag.

At the end of the day our backline has been outstanding lately and we haven't had to kick big scores, but going forward we simply need to score more.

King looks like a baby giraffe. He'll be awesome when he grows into his body.

I still see Battle as a forward and would be interested in seeing him get a couple of full games at FF, as I just see Max get bumped out of position too easy at the moment- might be different with another year under his belt though.
He’s one of the few in our team with a real core strength. Like he spent his youth throwing hay bales into utes and pulling calves out of their mothers bare handed.

I would have at least picked him the bench. Having said that, he really does need to play a good game or 2 next time he is selected in the 1's. Maybe they think he is not ready yet.

It makes no difference if they are picked on the bench or put in a position on the field.
They all play similar minutes.

Battle out again does my head in. The way ratten is managing him is atrocious.

It's like watching a slow train wreck.

Really frustrating.
Not sure why it’s doing your head in. Battle is only averaging 12 posies a game. Who goes out for him and what position does he play? Doesn’t fit in the forward line with Roma, Max and Members. While Highmore is in he doesn’t fit in the backline and Connelly looks a better disposal of the ball.

The puzzling thing is that Battle was dropped after playing his best game of the season with 21 disposals and 8 marks. I could understand him being dropped prior to that game as his form had been very average but it just seemed strange to drop him after he had finally had a big impact on a game.

I guess we just have to back the selectors in with their call of leaving Battle out and if we beat Brisbane then that decision will be justified but if we lose then people will have the right to question the wisdom of it.

It makes no difference if they are picked on the bench or put in a position on the field.
They all play similar minutes.
Not correct, if you cant get a kick you dont get equal minutes. Maybe one of our stats gurus can come up with some figures from the last couple of games.

Yeah I’m not sure Battle is the difference between us beating or losing to Lions. However his one good game came at a time when we seem to have made a shift in game style. Might be that he is just not part of team balance unless we drop someone that is achieving what we are looking for.
Anyways let’s hope he gets some better form in the 2s if he isn’t med sub.

No need to be a stats guru, its on the AFL website.

Paddy and Rowan the least.
Crouch (74) , Billings (80%) , Connolly (79%) and Long(80%) named on the interchange.

Crouch , McKenzie and Byrnes the least TOG apart from our rucks.

92 minutes or 105 minutes isn't a huge difference to me. No-where near as important as what they are doing in that time.

They all get rotated, and once on the field no-one is going "get that player off, he was named on the bench and we need to get our proper player on "
Hell they don't even name the field positions correctly some of the time.

I wouldn't want Battle in unless one of, Wilkie, Highmore, Howard, Marshall, Membrey , Ryder or Wood is out.

Because he's a forward being played out of position... then dropped. We'll screw this up then he'll go to another club and show his potential in his natural position. The apologists here will then bring out a raft of excuses as to why we didn't give him a decent run as forward.

I reckon Battle was due to be dropped before the Richmond game but with Billings 50-50 he got the go ahead to stay in the squad as he could replace him on the wing.
So with Billings back the week after the original plan to drop him was put in place despite him having a relatively good game.
3 weeks ago every was saying how poorly he'd been playing so it wasn't really a surprise.
Also a lot of people worried he's gonna leave the club after being dropped. Last i checked he's not the first bloke to be dropped and go on to do great things for that club. He's still young and contracted for next year so we all just need to get a grip, he'll be back in the red, white and black soon.
