Autopsy Round 17, 2025: Positives and Negatives vs GWS

Did anyone else have trouble with the jumpers clashing. For deck 5 the majority yellow vs basically all white, they just blended together.

I get the idea of wanting to ware the indigenous jumpers on NAIDOC weekend, but we have already had two weeks of Sit Doug round. Perhaps the wise move from the AFL would be to hold Sir Doug round over NAIDOC week.

The inherent design elements of the Indigenous jumpers will always lead to a higher clash likely hood. This could be again easily fix with having a secondary inverted or darker jumper required, especially if they are going to be used for 3 rounds in the season.
I had no issue. If someone broke a tackle it was a GWS player. If someone wasn't moving it was a Eagles player and so forth

Said during the week I was uncomfortable with all the positivity in the media. This team never fails to suck any positivity away very quickly

Just a shitshow of a performance from that first smother.

Only real positives were Shanahan and Ginbey. Harley and Edwards were good too, the rest can get in the bin. Very flat

How the **** can you be overawed by your own home crowd? That was very rough.

Mini needs to assert himself a bit through selection. Kelly just doesn't care as far as I can see - off to the magoos. I'm a long-term buyer of hutch but he's lost confidence and needs a spell. Cripps, I'm sorry to say, should have his papers stamped re contract.

They were overawed by having to chase players going on 100m sprints if you ask me.

Callaghan/Jones/Kelly/O'Hallaran just parked in defense and ran the length of the field to get into the forward 50 and none of our players could keep up or follow. Jones goal in the goal square was him running from defensive 50 and Maric unable to follow

To me it was a blueprint in how to beat us. Any team who watches that will beat us with ease.

Its also fair to say GWS butchered the ball which turned a 80+ pt loss into 50 pts

Its been the blue print for years. Apply pressure (we wilt), force turn over and then full speed the length of the groun. Because we don't chase, zone off too much to allow space and the mid field is too slow to keep up.

yeah I didn't like all the fanfare over a loss.

But it should have been drilled into them that the intent v Pies should be the baseline every week.

Saying that I think it was more skill level and unco-ness than trying

Ginbey was good
Jobe had some good moments
Hewett got in good spots but butchered it

Ball use absolutely shocking
Team defense in the air was poor
Lost alot of contests when we had the outnumber
Poor forward structure

One of the harder watches this year
In Melb so turned off at 3qt

Time to forget, try enjoy your weekend fellas

A few thoughts -

I’m a bit baffled about why Hewitt played the whole first quarter as the deepest forward. Seemed like a waste and once he moved into the midfield he was actually able to win clearances.

Hall was working hard playing on the wing. Only really had the one bad kick in the baseline that stood out. Was tackling hard when he had to.

I feel like at times the kids are trying to do too much because they just don’t have the senior players holding up there end of the deal. They are all being left doing more than they should at this point.

Forward connection was way off. Had multiple chances to move the ball quickly but just didn’t move the ball on quick enough letting GWS flood back. Tim Kelly was the biggest culprit. I swear every time he got the ball he took the full 30 seconds just so everyone could see him on the big screen.

The kids in the backline actually held up pretty well considering the amount of ball they had down there & the ease it was coming in at times. Duggan was the biggest letdown.

I don’t wanna see Jayden Hunt eating a whopper everytime GWS scored a goal.

It’s fair to say we butchered the ball enough that could’ve turned a 50pt loss into a 20pt loss.

Careful.. apparently he was our best player last night. Someone will come after you for being a hater
Who said he was our best player ? I must have been at a different game. 6 disposals in first qtr, 3 in 2nd qtr. Zero in 3rd qtr and 3 in last qtr would hardly make him our best player.

F.Y.I. Tim Kelly had more possessions than Liam Ryan. Should Ryan go back to the Magoos with Kelly ?

And Ginbey. He’s a perma-positive for me.

He sees a problem and tries to go and solve it. He doesn’t wait for others to fix it, and sometimes he’s a bit agricultural with his approach, but he owns the moment.

I haven’t bought a players badge for my scarf in about 30 years but I might just go and get his.

I like Brockman’s arc.

That controlling the bounce of the ball coming in over his shoulder inside 50; a couple of tackles that almost stuck; his connection with Ryan.

He’ll win a game for us soon and he’s finding his niche.
Brockman is starting to play better each week and his pressure inside 50 is very good.
His decision making with his kicking is still not great but should improve, he kicked it too Ryan almost all the time and didn't make the best decision when he had it but 50 games now he should be improving.

Thinking about it I think the worst thing is we looked and played like the Simpson era.

Players looked lost and disinterested all over the ground. Panicked disposal, fumble central. All our connection that had been building was gone.

A lot of credit to the Giants for cracking our code and breaking us down so convincingly. Most likely should have torched us by 15 goals with the freedom and control they had.

A bit of a worrying sign for Mini about what can be in store if a decent side bothers to take us seriously.

I'm not nearly as pessimistic about our performance as some here. I thought given the age profile and experience of the players that performed best, they did okay against an experienced attacking side.

Tactically and structurally we got whipped and we clearly need more running power and power in & away from stoppages to translate ball we win into effective attacking plays.

Thought our half forward to midfield connection was essentially no existent and that is party down to Kelly, Cripps not performing and the mids not getting effective and clear posession chains away from stoppages.

We can fix both.

Was at the game and it's way harder to judge what's going on but the things that stood out to me.

Ginbey is a beast. I am not for messing him around again this year, but I hope at some stage in the future he does get some rotations in the middle to see if his confidence can lead to some tough ball gets.

Reid is a beast and at least shows some desire to win a hard ball. He is the only midfielder making things happen.

Shanahan is a forward, I hope Mini sees this now. Just lock him in now and let him play. Happy for him to roll back and get intercepts as needed but I hope Mini doesn't try move him permanently back.

Liam Ryan was good, but FFS the amount of kicks that came in towards him, to his disadvantage, when he's 2v1 and they make him run backwards as well so he can't even leap properly. Felt so sorry for him, got the worst delivery.

Flynn's work rolling back to help the defenders was really good, although I couldn't see how his actual ruckwork was going from the stands.

Hewett and Hough were invisible I thought. Hewett has had a few quiet weeks now, or hasn't looked as polished when he has had the ball in hand.

The worst thing that I saw all game was Bo Allan in the D50 stepping aside to allow an uncontested GWS mark and goal. Wasn't even covering for anyone, just had the perfect spot in the leading lane, would have had first hands at it...then he just steps aside. It was so weak.

Take it up with Honeybadger
Take it up with the 10 other people who gave him votes.

Nobody is making you like Liam Ryan but imagine watching yesterday’s game and having any inkling that he’s part of the problem.

Also nobody said he was our best player, you just don’t like Liam Ryan or literacy.

Negatives;
-Hewett poor foot disposal early. I think I counted 4 turnovers from 25m< kicks not under pressure
-J.Williams Lazy. Didn't attempt to run up the ground to provide leads, poor body language.
  • Hutch living in fumble city
  • kelly no ****s given. poor leadership, intent and body language
  • cripps see above ^

Positives;
  • Ginbey
  • Brock
  • the whole backline really
  • Flynn i thought did well. Ruck stats can be misleading
  • Shanahan
  • the eagles fans that turn out every second week to home games

I reckon we're going into next week with a forward line of Archer Reid, Shanahan and Williams. No way Mini doesn't use this as away to bring Reid back in to the side.

Just imagine if Archer finally kicks a WAFL goal...

McQualter will pull him straight to the Beagles bench and keep him on ice for next week for sure ❄️
