  • Our pressure was really good from the outset and we forced Geelong to step up to our intensity. Although familiar faces often led that pressure (Mayne, Mundy, Blakely, Barlow), Pavlich was also in our top 5 for pressure acts which is a phenomenal effort from our spiritual leader.
  • I agree with RTB, that the last quarter was just as good, if not better than the first. Strongly recommend you watch the replay of that quarter. Some better kicks inside 50 and a couple of free kicks not going against us and we would have completely dominated the fourth and likely won.
  • The umpires made some wrong calls (mainly on the boundary line) but I think it happened in both directions and overall balanced each other out. We didn't lose because of the umpiring imo (nothing like the Sydney v Hawthorn game).
  • The stat differentials point to three key areas that lost us the game:
    1. Marks both contested and uncontested and especially marks inside 50 - it's been our achilles heel all year,
    2. Mistakes when moving the ball - either clangers, turn overs or just halting our flow forwards,
    3. Efficiency inside 50 - if we had converted as many as we could have, we would have won.
  • I think many on here are underestimating how well we played. We won the battle of the midfield against one that many rate as the best in the league, and we did it without Sandliands, Fyfe, Bennell and Barlow for a half.
  • We also had 14 bounces. The most all year by far. Most ignore this stat but if you have a big number like that, it usually means you are at least taking the game on. Which imo we were!
  • Our tackling inside 50 was also good and especially in that last quarter we had the ball locked forward for ages - we just couldn't convert.
  • I came away really positive after that game. As much as we lost I thought it was one of our better performances all year. Yes we made plenty of mistakes with our ball movement but all our players were intent on taking the game on. In time I can see those mistakes falling off and our good transitions increasing in number.
  • Our structure up forward and our delivery inside 50 still needs work but with Hill finding some form maybe that isn't as far away as it may seem either.

Ballantynes courage ,the little man is chock full of it. No matter how big the opponent is he goes in like there is no tomorrow. Again he has copped a serious injury with a kamikaze tackle. To play on with a fractured cheek bone and still not take a backward step is unbelievable. As Bob Hawke said ,anyone who has a bad word against Balla's is a bum. I love the little guy.

Great work :thumbsu:

Big difference in the marking stats.

We controlled a good portion of that game. Imagine if we had a few more people that could mark or a few more that could kick to the advantage of our players so they could mark. We would have completely controlled the game.

Do you know off hand if we usually lose the marking stat by that much?

Hill was fantastic. Would love to see that Hill on a regular basis. Walters exceptional too. Barlow was great before he went down. Thought Ballas did alright too. Tough bugger playing with a fractured cheekbone...is this due to his tackling technique? He really needs to stop leading with his face into the tackle.

Suban was MIA for most of the game. Ibbo played better. Mayne barely did a thing.

No room for Mzungu even though he tries hard although we have nobody else to pick from right now.

Main thing again was forward structure and delivery inside 50.... Sick of seeing us win the ball but with nobody to kick it to.

Mayne's best games were when we had a proper forward structure.
2 Talls
1 Fwd/Ruck
1 Med Tall
2 Smalls

Mayne is our 4th tall then and isn't really a target. He does what he does best applies pressure and tackles. Gathers the lose ball and is able to find space for a few cheapies because the opposition backline is actually having to be accountable for 6 forwards.

Part of me really really dislikes Mayne for his momentum killers in the past and how badly his set shots have gotten. But if he can be the 4th fwd behind Tabs/McCarthy/Apeness next year it wouldn't be the worst thing ever.

But if Taylor is right and he gets 500k a year at Sydney and nets us an end of 1st round or early 2nd round I'll pack his bags for him.

Very unusual for Mayne to be missing from an effort like that last night, really was his sort of night. Someone said he looked sore and I wonder if something is impacting on him.

Would make for an very interesting Freo forward line if he is unable to front along with Pav.

Have to agree, toughest player we've got

Watching Mayne last night I felt he was really struggling to run. I know he is not one of those graceful type runners but if he is fit then his time is up, if he is injured then he needs a rest.

The problem with the last quarter was that we dominated for an extended period, maybe 10-15 minutes for something like 2 or 3 behinds added to the scoreboard, then when Geelong finally got up the other end they kicked goals. Our forward set-up still sucks, we can't turn effort into goals. Been our problem for ages, we work so hard for so little reward.

I can't recall the exact wording, but Ross mentioned in his presser that they had spoken about better better as individuals or some thing to that effect.

I think that might explain why Stephen Hill and Michael Walters in particular played with a lot more freedom and took the game on.

Would love to see the elite players given their heads to be creative and the rest made to play within their limitations.

As we get more elite players back / in we will become a dangerous team.

General and contested marking we have been much better this season than we were yesterday. As for marks inside 50, we've been pretty rubbish all year. It's got just as much to do with delivery as it has with structure. I honestly believe if we could focus on this one area we'd instantly be far more competitive and winning far more games. Of course getting our two best marking targets back might help a bit ;)

Yeah I do agree with you. Our efficiency inside 50 is pretty ordinary and has been for a while but other teams struggle just as much in this area so we shouldn't be too harsh and unrealistic in where we are at with it. I've mentioned in a previous analysis that when Apeness and Smith were in the line up we had much better efficiency inside 50. But we don't have another tall forward available atm unfortunately. But when we do, and then add Fyfe and Bennell on top and there are some real scoring threats that could turn those opportunities in to actual scores rather than rebounds against. I was just happy we managed to dominate for that whole period against a quality side.

In terms of average per game, we're:

14th in marks (16th in marks differential)

7th in contested marks (11th in CM differential)

17th in marks inside forward 50 (15th in MIF50 differential).

Nice! You calculating the differentials across the league yourself or do you have access to them from Champion Data somehow?

On Subes. Ross mentioned he was moved back in the last qtr and got involved which he did somewhat. Anyone notice his position in the first 3qtrs. What was he doing? I honestly didn't see him and haven't watched the replay yet.
At times I thought he was running with Selwood but I could be mistaken....probably am :)

Hi guys.
Slightly off topic.

What were your views on the disposal of menengola when he was there?
He played in our VFL today and I thought he was inconsistent with the way he used it. And I really haven't seen him.

He did get it 48 times though which is a positive.
