Well, they've just signed Burgoyne for another year. Where is the ruthless Hawthorn? He's well past it and is very slow now. A liability.
their draft track record is pretty patchy too. Recent trades for Patton, Scully, O'Meara, Wingard have not exactly been big wins either.

I reckon it's some spivvy cap working by them if anything. Happy to stand corrected by someone more knowledgeable than me, but I would assume keeping him on as a player but giving him coaching roles too would not eat into whatever money they have set aside for their coaching department

100% They're transitioning him to an off-field role. I think instances like this (and Hodge at Brisbane/Mitchell at WCE) will become more prevalent post-COVID.

It does put a dent in the 'ruthless-Hawthorn' tag, IMO, though.
