My son and I noticed how well port played crisp, when he got possession they would get on his left side and force him to turn back into traffic and get tackled. Crisp seems to have no confidence in using his right side and was caught out quite a few times, did their homework well.

First option is usually the best. And one we often don't take.
Elliott had every right to stride in and take a relatively easy shot. Greenwood buggered one up by second guessing as well. I know they don't want to appear selfish, but sometime you just have to get the job done.
When the game is up for grabs and nobody is kicking a goal you just have take ownership. How is is it being selfish when Elliott had every right to kick the goal?

Agreed, it’s our mids that are a large part of the problem. As much as I love Jamie, he ain’t a midfielder and shouldn’t be spending more than 20% game time in there.

I know it’s an unpopular opinion but I really like Noble and the drive he brings to half back, he’s been quite a find and is coming along nicely. As is IQ, a good pairing along with Crispy and Maynard.

Playin midfield has mashed Elliots brain. Or maybe exposed his poor disposal.

That run down the flank where he got to 35, then stopped, sharted his pants, and rushed a kick on his left is a prime example - how did he not have a shot!?!??

Then there was another play from 60 out where he tried a dinky 30m pass and nicely picked the Port player 5m short of a pie and 5m long of a pie.

I remember him being deadly in front of goals, and a bit of an assist specialist in F50. What happened?

I'm not suggesting that he would have been selfish . I was screaming at the telly after he made a mess of it because he should have taken the shot. I wonder if they have it in their head that they must "do the team thing" to the detriment of sometimes just getting the job done when the chance arises.

Does anyone else think Lycett bears a striking resemblance to the Lorax from Dr Seuss?
On that note, I noticed a striking resemblance between Powell-Pepper and Boom-Boom from the Super Mario Bros series...

Apart from the one whose in the spotlight, how does Hoskin Elliott get away with it for a whole season and offer no real offensive threat.

He's made an art form of squibbing, he even put one arm out and missed an easy chest mark that went out of bounce because it involved opening his body up for a split second.

I reckon Montgomery Burns has more ticker and verve.

Bit harsh on Burnsy putting him in a category with the inflatable car yard tube man.

Strongly agree, although I think Cox is fine as a forward. Stephenson needs another year but we desperately need some better, pacy and defensively capable forward options.
Stephenson should be trade bait as he lacks the intestinal fortitude to wear the black & white jumper! He appeared terrified all night. What do you think players like Tony Shaw would think of some his efforts tonight? And I used to think Ryan Lonie was soft. What a disgrace.

Yes, it must be a coaching directive. It's certainly is a far cry from the 2011 side where the coach instilled confidence to the players

Yes, it must be a coaching directive. The job of the coach is to instill confidence in the players to have the shot and I think coaches fail in that regard. One day you're gonna need it when it matters most.

Apart from WHE, the players had a red hot crack. The coach? Not so much. Zero minutes at the centre bounces for DeGoey equals zero points for Buckley.

When you need a bit of extra zing in the guts, don't think, do!
You are joking. Stephenson had a red hot go? He was terrified all night. Softest player I have seen wear a black & white guernsey in over a decade if not longer. He makes Ryan Lonie look like Darren Millane. As for the coach, can't wait for more of the same in 2021!

A passage of play that sums up the way we play. Centre clearance, Grundy taps it to Elliott who has a bit of space. Instead of kicking the ball inside 50, for some bizarre reason he handballs to a player facing the opposite direction (Adams?) Just so he could receive the handball back and then kick it inside 50. The problem? Because he goes for the 1-2 handball instead of just kicking it forward in the first place, it gives the Port players time to close in on him and force him to turn the ball over, leading into an easy inside 50 for Port.

The over possession of the footy, hospital handballs, and general poor skills and fumbling are very frustrating to watch.

I know we scored a goal out of it, thanks to Mihocek, but what on earth was WHE thinking with that handball?? Surely there was no doubt he marked it. Most guys surely just take a shot from the top of the square. The chance of that turning to poo was greater than Mihocek kicking the goal. Was waiting for the Benny Hill music to kick in.

Thought our effort was admirable and we stayed in touch with Port. However, we were destroyed in the centre clearances so it led to easy goals for Port as soon as we were in touching distance of them.

I don't expect much against West Coast, though I'd love to be pleasantly surprised. We haven't been good enough this year and I think our ladder position is a fair reflection of where we sit.

We always seem to encounter West Coast in the finals. We played them in 1990, 1994, 2007, 2011, 2012, 2018 and now 2020.

Think the club needs to some make some big calls in the off season when it comes to our list. We haven't been ruthless enough with our list management in recent times.

In 2018 we used to isolate a dangerous fwd eg. Stepho or Degoey deep fwd and either hit them up on a lead or put it in space for them 1 v 1. Now it always seems to be a long bomb to no one or a chip to an opposition player. Very poor inside 50 entries again, to a congested forward line.

Tonight Cox looked dangerous, but we still couldn't take advantage of his height. Geelong destroyed them by getting the ball to Hawkins quickly one out and other fwds clearing space. Hoped we would do this same given they have an undersized backline.
In 2018 we played some quick direct football that allowed our forwards the space and 1 v 1. However Buckley decided that a successful gameplan wasn't to his liking and hitched a ride on a DeLorean at 88mph back to pre-2017 when we sucked because that is so much better.

Talk about banging your head against the wall and expecting a different result.

Buckley has decided he is a midfielder instead of a forward and is playing him out of position. Maynard is more of a midfielder than Elliot.

I'm quite surprised by the negativity about that game. It was frustrating in parts but I thought we actually played quite well for large chunks of the game. The fumbles were infuriating though
It’s the same issues week after week, slow ball movement, handball far to much, possession at all costs and a complete inability to score. Nothing’s changed so can’t blame everyone being over it because nothings been addressed to fix it.
It’s not like the issues change week to week, it’s the exact same ones every single week.

For a game that we could have pinched with a bit more luck I can see some potential in the finals.
I gave you a 'like' for presentation, although I basically agree with your lists. Our bottom 4 players are not AFL standard.

That’s not on him, that’s the coaches coaching out any flair and creativity the players have. A football team that has the license to take those shots and be daring will do it but you can see it and bucks always says it that it’s about the system. Making great players into drones. Look at Cal Brown for example, he’s a talented kid you can see that but every time he gets the ball you can see him thinking that he must do the team thing, get others in and not be an instinctual player. Yes you need a game plan but you also need to trust the players. Our coaches need to let them play, stevo looks scared to do anything but that may be other things.
Let’s take on WCE and make them think, “WTF are the pies doing?” They know our game plan and have shown that they can crush it. I’d be disappointed if we lost but happy to have tried to out fox them. Sadly our coaches don’t have the balls for that.
