Autopsy Round 18 = Collingwood 62-91 Carlton

How many times today did Carlton hold us up after a (rare!) free or especially a mark? There were at least 3 occasions today where our players took a clear mark and their opponent hit it out of their hands, yet no 50!.

Anyway, I don’t blame the umps for us not winning. I thought we were flat through most of the game and were only in front because we were playing an ordinary team.

They made no effort to run and make space. Have a look at the wide shot kick ins. No movement whatsoever up field.

I give Carlton credit though for sitting on those 45 degree kicks we got away with last week against the Tigers. The blues obviously set their zone way tighter.
Umpiring decisions reduced our lead, however by then Carlton had already started to adjust their game plan and restrict what was working for us. All season we've only been capable of a good quarter or two each match. This week that came early, but we weren't able to build enough of a margin.

Yeah true. They really squeezed in on us.

I thought our senior players were really down today, especially in the midfield. Pendles, Grundy, Adams, Crisp, Maynard and Sidebottom (expected these days) all had below average games. We are never going to win when that happens.

We have a big bodied midfielder, he is continually overlooked , he wears the bears number. while gifted games little boy Brown plays, this club is going nowhere, don`t want to see him ever in the Black and white, he is putrid, Sidebottom is cooked, said it last year , Million dollar baby giraffe is a disgraceful commitment from our Club, Mayne is a fantastic bloke , but he is not best 22 in any team now, Thomas should go back to the St-Kilda festival and eat more steak. On the positive side, I look forward to the careers in the likes of ,Poulter, Ginnivan, Henry, Quaynor, Daicosx2, Bianco, McCrae, Ruscoe, McInnes,Lynch, hope he stays, would be another massive f&ck up by our club , enough of these hand picked McGuire boys club selections, out with Buckley`s best man Sanderson and Harvey . In, a progressive coach who has a clear knowledge of how to create connection and vibes within the playing group, and Hine , your continued non selection of key forwards shows how out of touch you are with modern day football, be gone .

Sier is a spud at AFL level. Let it go.

How the hell did Grundy lose ruck contests to Silvagni? Ridiculous.
If Korda had any involvement as a board member in signing Grundy to a godfather contract, then he must stand down. That performance was woeful against Silvagni. Seriously. I thought the Beams deal was bad but Grundys is the gift that will keep on giving for years to come.

Really unfamiliar territory with the game still up for grabs going into the last you could see the potential of them running over us. We have nothing to play for whereas Carlton are still in the run for finals as 7th and 8th are still up for grabs. Walsh absolutely tortured us today.

We had some good players Maynard is back to his AA form, Roughy was good on Mckay until the last, Grundy his game is extremely hard to read because geez that passage in the first was unreal 2 kicks lace out for a goal but we were smashed in the 2nd half in the middle absolutely smashed. This comes due to I think as Adams in our only specialist clearance player De Goey was good but he did rack up a lot of cheap 1/2 possessions and didn't really go anywhere. Elliott so dangerous when he gets near it.

I think the places we lost the game were our defence is honestly shambolical sometimes the errors we make coming out are unbelievable under 10's stuff. We actually defend the initial contest extremely well stopping the goal however when getting the ball back we turnover in a 10 times worse position gifting them a goal off a turnover. Also, the one thing that stood out today which absolutely shifted me up the wall was on the last line of defence how many of our defenders and players went up for marks instead of punching the ball through. 4 instances were Maynard, Grundy, Crisp and Magden I don't get you are taught that in under 10s just punch it through. They went up for the mark and were beaten costing us goals each time which is just unforgivable for something so basic.

Disgraceful second half. Always hurts against those scum baggers.

What is left for the rest of the year?
Just play some more kids, send off some veterans, put some vulnerable stars on ice, and play the likes of Cox, Sier and Lynch to fatten up their trade value.

After last week's heroics I didn't care that much about today. Think the players might have felt the same.

A few observations.

Grundy is a good tall player but knows very little about being a rickman.

Ruscoe was our most reliable user.

JDG struggles to lift himself when things aren't going his way.

IQ's creativity appears to have been coached out of him. His instinct to run and carry has been turned into quickly handball to someone in no better position than you.

Ever since I saw Sidebottom on the bears at the local cricket late in the preseason I suspected he'd lost the hunger. I think he has confirmed it now.

Going to be a tough few years but we've had tougher!
Sidey has been on the beers his whole career so it's not that.

He's just done, unfortunately.

For those hoping Sier comes in -- I think he's done, I'm afraid. If he can't get a game this year, it's over for him. He's only ever play a couple of good months back in 2018 anyway.

Liking the look of quite a few of the youngsters now. Henry seems a keeper, Poulter and Bianco show promise, Ruscoe was actually pretty good in defence, I've got hopes for Macrae. So ... we really need Kelly to step up, and we need another couple of key position players.

Still, there are a few too many who go missing or who are just plodders in the side. WHE, Sidebottom, Murphy, Madgen, Mayne -- I have concerns. Big concerns.
Leave WHE out of that conversation mate. He is a quality player, an excellent finisher with the ball and he has a number of good years ahead of him.

Replying here because the game day thread is locked for a reason. Blues_Man do you cowardly troll react every opposition board's game day thread hours after the match or is the Collingwood board an exception? While you're here if words aren't too hard for you please feel free to actually contribute something meaningful and argue your case about why you think I'm wrong.

Poor last quarter and disappointing nobody stood up. Really disappointed Grundy didn't stand up. To see him let Silvagni take the ball out of the ruck in the last quarter and kick it forward was ordinary. He's length of contract and resultant potential loss in Lynch might be yet another stain on our list management pre-Wright because he's a shadow of himself (despite a good first half).

Our midfield was also disappointing today and our ball use and clanger count was horrific. Today undid a lot of the good work from the last 6 or so weeks. Ball use, structure and decision-making still seems to be a concern.

Some pluses were Henry showing us a glimpse and Ruscoe looking more comfortable down back.

Disappointing to let the streak against them end and for H2H to even up again.

Billy Elliot's continued good form - and avoiding injury - was another glowing spark on an otherwise dark (navy blue) day.

When any team's pressure drops off, you can look terrible. It happened to Richmond last week, and it happened to us this week.

I thought we were good in the first half, but didn't make the most of our dominance. Once Carlton's pressure increased in the second half, the game was starting to slip away from us gradually.

In the final quarter, we struggled to win any centre clearances and Walsh was killing us. Once McKay started impacting on the scoreboard, it was all over.

The last quarter also exposed our lack of midfield depth. We can't keep relying on Pendlebury and Sidebottom forever, and Adams was nowhere to be found in contrast to last week when he was involved in everything.
