Ladder after Round 18
Headlines:
Southern Dragons have almost wrapped up the minor premiership with a hard-fought win against Geelong Gumbies. The Dragons trailed at half-time but a scintillating third quarter had them leading by more then five goals at three quarter time. But with a finals spot on the line, the Gumbies came storming back and hit the lead but couldn't hold on to win. The Dragons lead second place by three games and more then eight percent and with only three games left it is hard to see them finishing anywhere but first.
Fighting Furies moved into second after ending the Hawks' winning streak at Waverly. In a hard-fought game, both sides tussled all day but the Furies finished on top when the final siren sounded, winning a thiller by five points. The win moves them into second after the Wonders couldn't get onto the winners' list.
Speaking of the Wonders, they are third now after being thrashed by the Mod Squad to the tune of 62 points. That loss sees them slip to third and are in great danger of losing the double chance if they can't regroup over the final few rounds. The team chasing them for third is the Hawks who remain fourth after losing a close match to the Furies. Their streak is over but it has put them in good stead and they are almost two games in front of sixth position with finals looking a likely prospect.
The Mod Squad revived their season after easily defeating the West Coast Wonders and the win sees them slide into fifth at the expense of the Bombers. Their form on the weekend has long been missing from the Mods for the last few weeks but the win against the Wonders showed they can still be a pretty dangerous side. The Mods aren't out of danger yet though and hold fifth by less than a game. You would think they'd need to win at least two games to hold that spot after the completion of the home and away rounds.
Baghdad drop outside the five to sixth after losing to the Mount Buller Demons. The Bombers must now focus on trying to get back inside the five after a resurgent Mod outfit snuck back into fifth spot and look to be back in town after an easy win. Baghdad must regroup and would need to win at least two of their last three to make the finals and hope the Mods slip up along the way.
Geelong remain seventh after narrowly losing to the Dragons. The Gumbies lead for the majority of the game but weren't in front when it counted. They sit on 25 points and are now almost two games behind the Mods in fifth and to play finals, the Gumbies need to win their final three games to give themselves a chance and hope the Bombers and Mods have troubles late in the season.
Mount Buller remain last but will be buoyed after finally breaking their drought by beating the Bombers. The Dees are an outside chance to get off the bottom but must at least win their final two matches and hope the Gumbies don't win any which may prove tough but still achievable. Mount Buller will go into the last three rounds will some renewed confidence after their win and may cause some teams a few problems with finals only a few weeks away.
Round 19
Fighting Furies v West Coast Wonders
Match of the Round for mine. Furies can almost seal a home final here with a win over the Wonders whilst the Wonders need to win to try and get a home final of their own and to keep the Hawks at bay in fourth. A high stakes game this one and one of three good games in Round 19.
Southern Dragons v East Side Hawks
Southern Dragons can win the minor premiership with victory over the Hawks and with that can secure a bye in week one of the finals series. East Side will be focusing on bouncing back after a loss to the Furies in the previous round and can keep their hopes of a double chance alive with victory over the Dragons.
Baghdad Bombers v Geelong Gumbies
Probably the second most important game of the round but would almost be worthy of Match of the Round Status with the stakes huge in this game. Baghdad could potentially get back into the five with a win here provided results go their way whilst the Gumbies need to win to keep in touch with the five otherwise their finals hopes could be all but dashed. Almost an elimination final at Windy Hill and one that will be watched with some intent.
Mod Squad v Mount Buller Demons
The Mods will do their finals chances no harm with victory over the Demons but a loss could see them drop out of the five only a week after getting back in there. Mount Buller's quest to get off the bottom begins here and they need to win to get close to the seventh placed Gumbies.
