Southport have the chance to lock in a top 4 spot this week with a win over Essendon, the Sharks looking to continue their 8 game winning streak whilst the Bombers will be hoping to snap a run of two straight losses, despite playing some good football over the last 2 months. Southport won their only ever game against each other last year, a tight match where Essendon were forced to call on players like Patrick McCartin and Alex Rance to top the team up.

Southport's last game was a low scoring affair against Sydney, beating the Swans by 22 points. It was mostly their former AFL listed players leading the way, with Boyd Woodcock having 24 disposals and 2 goals, Billy Gowers having 21 and 2 and Jacob Dawson collecting 21 disposals through the middle of the ground to take advantage of Brayden Crossley's dominant work in the ruck.

Essendon had a disappointing loss to Southport's neighbours Gold Coast, conceding 2 goals in 5 minutes kicking into the wind to lose by 3 points. Patrick Voss and James Stewart were the twin towers up front, the pair kicking 4 goals apiece for the Dons whilst VFL listers Stefan Rasinac and Joel Fitzgerald drove the midfield with 25 disposals apiece, with youngster Billy Cootee also having 20 disposals and a goal.

Southport are the second best team in it. Hard to see us winning. Southport by 35, possible team:

FB: Aaron Francis - Zach Reid - Josh Eyre
HB: Alastair Lord - Cody Brand - Joel Fitzgerald
MF: Tom Cutler - Stefan Rasinac - Garrett McDonagh
HF: Massimo D'Ambrosio - Patrick Voss - Tom Hird
FF: Michael Hurley - James Stewart - Jye Menzie
OB: Nick Bryan - Brayden Ham - Alec Waterman
IC: Cian McBride - Joe Atley - James Harrold - Brad Bernacki
23P: Billy Cootee

Perkins probably getting a full game in the middle. Pretty sure this is his first ever official VFL game

Our size should trouble them if we get the ball inside 50 enough. Tom, son of Neville, Fields is their tallest defender at 192 and apart from Bowman as their second ruck they don't really have a tall target down there. Stewart, Hurley and Voss could have big games here

I'm expecting Voss to kick 8 here and have 30+

What happened to Fejo Jr? I don't recall him playing much, if at all. He was in contention for a list spot with Nic and Tex.

Injured? Not good enough?

Pascu has very nice hands. Bad defence by Southport with nobody on the line though

Wanted Hurley to take the shot but happy Lord has one.

Much better quarter. Think we need Stewart forward for the third and have Francis as the loose.
