Need some advice, VC was a bust, and I'm left with Rocky, Merrett, or Dusty. Help!

I would have been lucky to have 3 rounds were ive nailed the VC/C choice, would have lost a good 300-400 on bad captain choices.
Does anyone have a certain method to maximise points captains points each week, it seems to me that rewarding a high score the week before generally doesn't work, or you can go the safe option and go danger. As im typing this i just thought that rewarding your 2 top 3 or 5 round average scorers with the VC/C and work around that depending on whos playing when might be a good ploy ?
