The Over 50’s Clique Dream Team

B: Lester, Andrews, Starcevich
HB: Coleman, Gardiner, Rayner
C: McCluggage, Berry, Ah Chee
HF: Zorko, Hipwood, McCarthy
F: Cameron, Daniher, Bailey
Fol: McInerney, Neale, Mathieson
Int: Lyons, Prior, Robertson, Fort
Emerg: Payne

This team is full of natural footballers who have a red hot go and there are no ‘Coach’s Pet or Project’ players. It would give us the best shot at winning the Premiership this year.

Too solve our lack of speed I would do this.

F: McInerney, Daniher, Bailey
Fol: Fort, Neale, Mathieson
Int: Cockatoo, Prior, Madden, McStay
Emerg: Payne

Rich, Lyons, Answorth, Robinson make way for some faster players. The replacements may not have the experience but the game has moved on.

I’d be happy to bring in some younger players but with final coming up, it’s not the time.

Put up your best teams.
Why did you drop Charlie Cameron? That lad can play!

Scraped home and dug deep.

Some senior players should be in the firing line for getting dropped.

Robbo - undisciplined and butchered it all night
Rayner - barely sighted
McStay - lazy *** and looked disinterested

Just did enough - can't play like that against the Tigers next week
It’s already been pointed out that one of Robbo’s free wasn’t a free and yes the next one wasn’t good but give it a rest with getting on the moral highhorse calling him undisciplined.

Can 1 person be a clique?

Is it just drop Adams of Lester?

I don’t think Fagan plays favourites it’s just that we don’t have good depth
Fagan certainly has his preferred best 22 compared to rest of the list. It was pretty clear when Matho couldn't get a go with 9 down for covid.
If he puts that aside, then Fort will surely get a spot in place of one of our three talls.

Selection and match committee of 1
3KZ selection policy:-

All player positions up for grabs and selected purely on form.

Except Lester who is a permanent fixture, given a new 10 year contract and appointed Captain for life.

There is that, but other innovations include:
  • Rayner to half back
  • Coleman for Rich
  • Zorko to HFF
  • Room for Prior and Robertson
  • McInerney and Fort in the side, with option of one resting one forward for periods of time.
  • Removal of McStay who has checked out
  • A quicker team and a great balance of youth and experience.
  • A team that will take games on.
  • NO PASSENGERS
I’ve been following Australian Rules for over 55 years and I think the selectors at the Over 50’s Clique have done an outstanding job.

Personally ,and I'm sure it's the case with others, I'm really happy to have a competitive team but part of the fun of it all is trying to work out ways we can be better and possibly win a flag.

If we were just going to come here and RA Ra all the time that wouldn't be much fun and less interesting.

Valid point.

But some just come here to Rag Rag, Pot ,Pot and whinge, whinge.

Differences of opinion are fine but constant banging on about a hobby horse and/or strident over the top criticism just gets tiresome.

Maintaining a modicum of balance isn't all that hard.

He has his preferred team structure I'm guessing you mean
Structure is fine but its skewed to certain players in my view. Reasons vary from Fagan's loyalty to that core group, trust, comfort factor - we can wordsmith it in many different ways. But some definitely get that best 22 preference over others even while having average output.

Example could be Prior is playing 2s this week but a bunch of them came straight back in.

Love it. I’ll be 60 this year, so I look forward to our meetings. Also coming up to The GABBA for the Melbourne game. Thinking of setting up a trestle table outside the ground and dispensing wisdom to anyone who wants to understand the game on a deeper level.

Over 50’s team and Over 60’s team - serve as a demonstration of our depth. Both would be competitive.

Prior is also much less proven than the others who came in and has been dropped due to form at points this year. Bringing him back through the VFL simply made the most sense.

He's one of our better 2 way runners, very similar to Ah Chee in my view. Should be ahead of few in best 22.

Before I disappear for a week … given Fagan’s pre-game proclamations - did he prove the doubters wrong or just confirm the basis for those doubts this week? How do people think we will go at the MCG next weekend? Are we back in town? Was last night a MISSION ACCOMPLISHED moment?

What are the implications for Fagan if we come to Melbourne next weekend and lose to Richmond?

Given our game plan and structure was very sound and held up, I'm feeling like things are clicking in areas we were previously in a bit of shambles.

It was clear as day that our decision making and execution were the reason it was a close game above anything else. It is extremely fixable and we did just that in the fourth.

I think we need to get that midfield balance right and we'll be in with a good shot come finals.

I think it’s just a matter of getting some cohesion back into the team.
There has been a huge amount of disruptions the past few weeks and some consistent team selections will allow some consistent team form and stronger performances.
