He's super fun to watch as long as you're comfortable with being stressed out every time he's got a set shot
Im still not sure what to think of his last shot at goal . I mean a snap from 40 odd out almost directly in front? Barely scores a point . Surely as a pro you have to be better than that. I know he's fun and not your average player but still - does he do that in the finals?

I have no idea why he did it. I think he would do it with a minute to go in a grand final, Joe is Joe.

You are an astute person - do you think Cam, as a pick one has a game in him like that no 1 from Dogs, Ugle Hagen or consistency of say a Walsh? I really want Cam to succeed and occasionally he shows glimpses, but like Rowell, Walsh, Ugle Hagen and even HorneFrancis, they get best on grounds or win games off their own boot but I worry that Cam doesn't simply have it. Worse yet, guys from his draft class such as Brayshaw at Dockers of Uniak-Davies at North look miles in front of him or do we just accept that he'll be an average player that teases us with brilliance from time to time?
I’ve given up waiting. As I said earlier, we are so far down the Cam Rayner ‘rabbit hole’ we just need to go along for the ride. He may never be more than a flashy ‘good average player’ to quote Jack Dyer or he may turn out to be a superstar. Impossible to tell.
I actually think he needs a defensive role for a while, playing HBF. Give him a job, make him accountable and make it clear he stays in the team for as long as he performs his role consistently.

Poor game from our tall backs.

Matho worse than last week but still AFL standard. We will see.

Ridiculous decision having Fort as the sub.

A bit better from Lyons and Bailey. Hope they rediscover some form.

How the hell was Joe's smother goal allowed to stand. He was 3 metres from the kicker, turned around and jumped. That is the definition of a protected area 50m.

He played on, what’s Joe suppose to do make himself invisible? He played on then he cut it off

Dude… what?

If the attacking player doesn’t give them time to clear the area and immediately plays on, the players in the area are allowed to engage.

Pretty logical isn’t it, otherwise you’d have players taking marks and running straight at defenders to win 50m penalties.

Coming back from a knee is tough

It's normally the year after you come back from your knee that you make strides

Hippy's doing the work and the km - McStay is not interested and being lazy

Two tall IMO is the preferred set up - if the Lions could nab a hybrid medium/tall it would complete the dynamic
Perhaps a hybrid medium/tall that we already have on our list? That can play some mid minutes but doesn’t seem to have the tank for full mid minutes. A guy that has shown he can be a very good target when given the room? I think Rayner is that guy tbh. Giving him a role where he can demand the ball would be great for him and us IMO. I’m not a fan of the 3 talls anyway.

Cam needs an improvement in gut running / covering ground this off season. Once he starts getting to more contests, his other strengths will shine through. We can't fix it during the season so he's playing the role best suited for him at the moment - high half forward with change up rotation in the center bounce.

Good to see Mathieson given a chance and proving he is worth a spot in the side. Our clearance has improved with him back in the side and he is a very reliable kick for goal.

Starcevich should have got the medal but they don't recognise efforts like that. Gardiner was excellent and has been since coming back from injury. Important player in our chances come finals time.

Good to see Ah Chee play well.

Suns going to be a very tough team to beat in coming years.

Watched the replay and it confirmed my thoughts from the ground - it was our silly turnovers that kept them in it. The Suns played very good football and Casbault was uncharacteristically accurate which kept them in the contest the same way they've done to the likes of Melbourne, Freo, Sydney etc.

I suspect we'd have carried a 2-4 goal lead through most of the match and kicked away in the fourth had we not made so many unforced errors which resulted in Suns goals.

Lost it as in wow I am so excited this is awesome or lost it as in how dare these evil worms defile the honour of la belle France?**

**sorry if asked and answered later in the thread

But of both. Very much 'what the ...'.

To be fair, he'd enjoyed a few beverages, and had kept us in tears of laughter during the game with his no idea commentary. Could have still been in that mode.

Well, just flew back from brisbane. The gabba is such an awesome stadium. I felt like no matter where you sat you had a great view, and the vibes were immaculate.

Starc was amazing. His constant niggle on Rankine was the perfect way to effectively shut down a player.

I was sitting in the Gabba gardens section so had perfect view of joe and oscars goals. Amazing.

If we can get Rayner and Bailey firing at their best I think we can go deep in September

I feel like we really missed kiddy’s ball movement and decision making in the back half…. I would also really like to see Cocky given a shot at Answerth’s roll. He mentioned the other week that half back was initially the position discussed when he made to move to brisbane. His ball use is far superior to Noah’s… I love his effort but geez he can be a liability on the offensive end

Although the flip side we got 4 goals you normally not get.
Joe and Oscars snaps most days would miss.
Matho could play cricket with that off spin goal
Then Joe smoother and goal

I didn’t say anything personal.

It’s not a sore point. It’s that you keep banging on about Keays.

Whether you bring him up or not, you make the discussion in to something it’s not.

I still don’t understand how you can say it grates from the club’s perspective. No one from the club has engaged in any discussion here.

I’m one of those who wished we had kept Keays.

I’d have kept him instead of Mathieson. They’re similar players, with similar deficiencies, except Matho has a bigger body and Keays is a far superior runner.
I simply defend him where others denigrate him from a playing perspective. The grating bit is from how supporters view it from a club perspective , not the club itself.

That's how I see it and that's my intention.

I fail to see how I make the discussion into something it's not when I'm simply disagreeing with all the others who have a negative perspective on his playing ability.

Perhaps you missed it but when he first emerged as a reasonable player some of the comments were derogatory and quite nasty. With lots of thumbs up.

I wish we'd kept him but it's nothing of any great consequence. I wished we'd managed to keep Crisp ,Yeo and Docherty more. Obviously.

It's hard to know what his ceiling is but his tank isn't what it needs to be for an elite player . Unless we see him as a burst player who predominantly plays forward . This is his 3rd full year and he's been in the best players 2 ,perhaps 3 times. Unfortunately he's burdened with No 1 pick which means expectations are higher than what he probably has the capacity to deliver. He gets half a mulligan on this year back from an ACL . I agree he needs a defined role that he can focus on . We throw him here and there, he's trying to take speccies, overruns the ball a bit just tries to do too much whenever he gets near it.

I think it's hard for him in some ways on top of the serious injury and to his credit he's maintained a cheery and positive demeanour.

Yep, moving on Keays certainly wasn’t the worst list decision the club has made.

Glad that you had a great experience! Sounds like a good place to watch from.

He is the wrong body shape. Too heavy.

He is 22 and coming back off an acl… the back end of the year was always going to be tough. He had 3 snags and 19 touches last week…. Give the kid a break
I know he’s coming back from a knee but he’s closer to 23 than 22. Look at other players of the same draft who produce with much more consistency. He will never be a high disposal player but even his power plays are few and far between.
2017 drafted players who don’t use the only 22 excuse are Andrew BrayShaw,
Zac Bailey(although recent form has wained), Adam Cerra, Noah Bolta, Brandon Starceviech too name just a few. Have a look there are plenty more.
I do think that he should play forward in a Toby Greene role and but at the moment he doesn’t deserve any forward position above Charlie, Linc or Bailey and just that says a lot about where he’s at.

I think it’s fair to say Cam isn’t the player we imagined him to be when we drafted him

However, he has improved over most of this season coming off an ACL. He is showing signs of being able to break tackles, hitting the scoreboard etc.

His first 4 weeks were quiet, his next 8 were very good, every week we were saying he was improving/doing well - last month he has leveled off.

Just stay the course, a guy like him takes time.

Slower development than expected in general, knee reco, first year in the midfield with a small tank, all things considered I reckon this year has been a tick.

Just need to hold out like the dees did with Trac.

Thats all true but I still think at time he should (and I still argue it should have happened a year or so back) get dropped to find form in the twos. I think would have done well to spend a week or two playing in the middle and racking up the ball.

I also agree with those saying his role is tough at the moment. Not enough mid time, but not being able to play like a natural medium forward when we have so many talls

Drafting is a lottery especially at the age kids are drafted…
Dow, Stephenson, Bonar, Coffield, Clark, O’Brien, Bradner, Ling and even Darcy Fogarty were taken in the top 14 picks that year. It wasn’t an incredibly strong draft. The culture that Cam has helped create, especially at the time that he was drafted, has been a huge turning point for the club. He is a great… great clubman and these type of players are extremely valuable. The rewards on field will come. He is a slow burn… I have no doubt he will be a star

8 Lachie Neale (BL)
8 Brandon Starcevich (BL)
