The Lions' side is pretty much as expected with Merrett in to replace Charman and Tom Logan in to replace Brennan. Two more new guys getting debuts. Three rookies in two weeks... first time that would have happened to the Lions for quite some time. Port have lost out of their first round team: Bishop, S. Burgoyne, Mahoney, Thurstans (all injured) and P. Burgoyne suspended. Shatts is getting a run which is good for him. He's one of the ex-Lions that I'd like to see do well (same way I've felt about Craig Bolton and Robbins), although not too well in this particular game. He's was unlucky at the Lions and he's good enough to deserve a starting place in an AFL team. So I hope he has a good season.

This will be a good test for the Lions. The Port side has problems with injuries and a suspension but then again, so do we. This is probably our youngest side for some time, just look at the guys on the bench. Not that I have a problem with that, these guys deserve their places but they are probably being thrown in the deep end more so than other years where the Lions had the luck to be able to slowly blood youngsters.

It'll be a battle all over the ground. Leppa and Mal will have to work hard to curb Tredrea and whichever spare ruckman they send up forward. Wanganeen will be tricky as always, not sure who'll get him...maybe Scott. I think if we can push Tredrea out of the 50 to take marks (similar to Riewoldt) then we'll probably win the battle down back because we've normally been good in stopping resting ruckmen in the forward zone.

In the centre it'll be the battle with Voss, Lappin, Power, Aka versus James, K. Cornes and Francou (great to see him back, been unlucky). I think Port don't look quite as tough without Carr in the middle, especially as it will probably take Francou a few matches before his touch is back. We should be able to stop Port's midfield this time... they're lacking something.

In the ruck... this will be close. Brogan, Lade and Primus are all quality ruckmen and Keating isn't entirely match fit yet so Mclaren will have to work hard. I think we'll probably get shaded in this area but hopefully our midfield will be able to shark the hitouts.

Forward. Will be very interesting. Braddie will need to make a greater impact this week. Pike will work hard and kick a couple of goals as he normally does when he plays centre half-forward. Keating may chip in with one or two if he's in touch. Hopefully McGrath and the rest of the forwards will lock the ball in more than they were able to last week. The forward pressure, I felt, was lacking at times against the Saints. No doubt Merrett will get a run up forward at some point. Port's defence is arguably their strongest element. Wakelin, Chad Cornes and Kingsley are quality defenders. I was very impressed with Cornes last season and hopefully Pike can at least work him hard. Forward-wise, could go 50-50.

My tip: Oooo, Lions by 18 which is a brave tip away but I think Port aren't looking quite as scary as last time. Then again, isn't that what they said about us against the Saints? Should be a great match.
