So a week into the season and we're already facing a season defining game. Richmond coming off a first up win but beginning life without the best defender in the game and Collingwood who are at risk of starting the season 0-3. For us it's a chance to go 2-0 and it's also our first glimpse of life without Rance who suffered a season ending ACL injury.

Midfield Battle
Nankervis v Grundy - Nankervis dominated on Thursday night and got rewarded with 3 goals. Bit of a different opponent this week fronting up against Grundy who had the better of him in the prelim final. Time for Nank to get some redemption.

Cotchin Martin Prestia Graham McIntosh Edwards Lambert v Pendlebury Beams Treloar Sidebottom Phillips Mayne Aish. In the prelim the Pies midfielders won the battle and as a result helped them win the game. Time for our boys to get redemption. With the 6-6-6 starting positions in play this battle will be even more important. Our midfield looked a little different on Thursday night as Graham had a more prominent role in hunting the ball rather than an opponent, McIntosh looked more assured of himself and Cotchin was back to his ball hunting best. Dusty was a little quiet, hopefully he is just building into the season. If we can get on top in the middle then the Pies backline will be under the pump.

Our Defenders
Redemption will be in the minds of our back 6 after Cox looked like Wayne Carey in the first half of the prelim. Without Rance it will be a tough job but I'll back our system to make the necessary adjustments. Astbury likely get Cox with Broad to go to Mihocek, Grimes and Vlastuin to go with Elliott and DeGoey which leaves Short and Houli to play on Thomas and Stephenson. I reckon Markov will get the call up to replace Rance while Garthwaite builds fitness after coming back from an achillies injury. Bonus with Markov coming in is he gives us another runner as we seemed one short on Thursday.

Jack & Tom Show
It is games like this where the addition of Lynch will become even more crucial. The Pies defenders won't be able to simply sag off and double/triple team Jack and after blowing out the cobwebs against Carlton, Tom will be better for the run and hopefully have a bigger impact after he constantly got himself to the right position but just couldn't clunk it. If he can start clunking those marks then Jack becomes dangerous as well as defenders will start to double Tom.

Final Word
As you can probably tell this game is about redemption. While a win won't make up for the disappointment of last years prelim final it is always nice to beat the Pies and IMO we will do just that.

Last year, against Adelaide, I pointed out that for all the redemption/revenge comments (mostly from cows fans), it was a new season, teams had changed, and really the game had nothing to do with the previous years finals.

Same applies.

This isn't about redemption, this is about beating a team with a very strong midfield and sort of adequate forward and defense lines. If our midfield can break even we'll win i reckon.

Rance will be missed, but the Pies don't have the sort of KPFs that make his loss a huge problem.

Match ups will be important. But if Tom and Jack actually turn up with the heads switched on and catching mitts attached we should overpower them.

We've got to bring the pressure all game. And I reckon we will. Switched off after a dominant first term Thursday. Won't do that again soon. Love it that the Demons and Pies lost. We can cause some real problems for the rest of the Pies season this week.

Very hard to judge the form this weekend.
In fact not only has there been odd results the standard of footy has been putrid at times and players have looked stuffed.
Our game was pretty bad for fumbles etc but some of the other games have been horrid spectacles of fumbling and terrible kicking.

Exactly...let's not all fall into the old trap of replaying last year's PF!
New year, players, rules, tactics...here and now!

The loss of Rance should take away any level of complacency that resides in the team at the moment.
Let's face it we've been the best team for a long time now and the boys haven't had their backs against the wall since 2017. The pies will be very keen to replicate last year's prelim final so in many ways this game will be won and lost in the coaches box. Let's hope our coaches have the answers. If Sidebottom is allowed 40+ possessions again then I'll be tempted to use the microwave

Collingwood has the best midfield EVER seen on an Aussie Rules ground, EVER, and will generate so many scoring opportunities that no team can live with them... 9.11.65
Jordon De Goey is the beast incarnate that makes Dustin Martin look like Aaron Fiora, add Mason Cox the top 50 goliath that has become an unstoppable force, Stephenson, Elliott and Mihocek and it's 20 goals a game minimum... 9.11.65
The hype over this mob is hilarious, decent and dangerous team, yes indeed, premiership favourites, far from it.
