Showed plenty and completely ran out of legs against the premiers (+) on the longest trip in footy. Looked like a young team in the last term. Still so much to take away.

Positives
  • Liam Ryan goes bang
  • Dewar started so well, and will be a difference maker for us
  • Cole was a beast, exceptional game and set the tone for tackling
  • Baker/Kelly did exceptionally in a undermanned midfield. Big lift.
  • Hewett is close. It’s not sticking yet (second game in two years), but when it clicks it will be great
  • Clay Hall grew into that massively. Showed me what for. Skills aren’t an issue if he’s doing all the dirty work, and added a goal to boot
Negatives
  • Not 15, play on. Hysterical whistle today. Lions fans being upset by one of the all time rides is the icing on the cake.
  • Playing Allen back shoulder is suicidal, it was dumb last week and it looked even worse today. Please let our forwards lead at the pill. Allen himself needs to work harder to get involved if he’s going to be so reliant on out the back in the gameplan.
  • Archer battled hard but midfield battle really swung when Bailey Williams left (lol?)
  • Cripps and Owies were huge tone setters early, great chasing and tackling, but added little late. Long invisible all day. Can’t carry all three I don’t think.
Negative but, after old mate wobbles came tumbling down the stairs to have a pop, it’s just a thought that has cumulatively built over time:
  • I’ve never seen more grown men, be they media, umpires, opposition fans, opposition players, more keen to use one player to make a name for themselves. The Harley Reid treatment is astonishing and needs calling out. It was the thing that pissed me off the most with Simmo, he did a great job telling the media to just be a bit more aware of their actions on the way out, but needed to stamp down the agenda that there is seemingly this anything goes target on Harley because he had the audacity to be drafted Pick 1. Any Eagles fan who doesn’t go in to bat for this kid is a mug.

Harley does cop it but he brings it on himself. He should focus on the game.
If someone tackles him it isn't a personal attack, play on
Play within the team.

Stop complaining please.. please

The only ones allowed to criticise Reid should be Eagles fans, everyone else can shove it.

Positives
  • Bailey dominating ground balls in the ruck
  • Liam Baker's first qtr - showed us what real intensity is about
  • Liam Ryan back in business
  • Dewar dominating on the wing
  • Clay Hall and Hewett getting game time
  • Tom Cole did some good things
  • Archer Reid influential when on the ground
  • We didn't stop fighting
Negatives
  • Umpiring and freekick count
  • Oscar gone missing
  • Bailey and Archer both cramping and having to go off
Overall, a good fight from us. I will be able to watch some of the footy shows this week and not cringe.

I wonder if some are reticent to do so after the Willie Rioli debacle

✋

On another note, wins or losses don't bother me over the next couple years as long as they play like an actual proper Football team. Today they did, hope they carry it on to the Derby.

And we're never going anywhere as a team until we get a real ruckman.

Lots to like today:
  • Dewar translating his pre-season form into actual season outcomes;
  • Baker's first half;
  • Hough's efforts (except for a couple of brain fades);
  • Ginbey's versatility;
  • Maric's 4 quarter involvement;
  • Hall demonstrating his clearance chops;
  • Harley working his way into the game (and not being an Ashcroft);
  • Brockman actually working hard in the 2nd half;
  • Cripps first half efforts;
  • Cole's defensive work and general decision-making; and
  • Ryan's set shot kicking.

Some things that were less than ideal:
  • Duggan;
  • Kelly's disposal at times;
  • our non-existent forward line in the last quarter (and Andrews complete dominance all game);
  • McGovern's subdued and inconsequential game;
  • Long having two disposals after the first quarter;
  • Neale's dominance at the clearances in the 2nd half; and
  • the idiotic umpiring.

Kid's got attitude, doesn't take a backward step, even with the crowd.
Reckon he can handle it. But yeh, how do you take the media heat off him?
They're even criticising his constant smiling on field.
I like his trademark 'sh*t eating grin' - reeks of confidence.
Wait until he backs it up regularly.

But I agree he should stop complaining and playing for frees, just get up quick and get on with it, team sport.

HoneyBadger35 final point.

We desperately need someone (I'd love for it to be a show of force from the club, McQualter, Duggan, Pyke Monday morning) to come out and call every single person out. Shame every media personality who has let this fester for 12 months.

Ive never seen anything like it in the AFL world before (maybe Goodes copped the similar treatment in his final years, but he atleast had the weight of the AFL and it's media behind him). Its the good old Aussie tall poppy syndrome rearing it head in the most ugly of manners.

Mate he gets tackled and three blokes not involved in the tackle jump on the pile long after the whistle.

He got multiple off the ball cheap shots in preseason game one against Adelaide last year. Before he’d played a game. This has been something that has hounded him since before he debuted.

He’s discussed all week, there’s a fervour whipped up around him, he goes to play footy on the weekend and gets booed by fans seeing him play for the first time on the first mark. There’s no history here or backstory or reason for the target, and spare me the “he brings it on himself” in a league that reveres Dusty and De Goey, or with an admin that protect Daicos or Rowell, or with the acting we saw from the Ashcrofts today. It’s bizarre and remarkably unearned.

He’s 19 and clearly sick of it, he gets drawn into niggle now and clubs know they can exploit that, so I get that element. He used to just laugh it off, so it’s clearly getting to him. But the vitriol from fans, and the fact the industry can’t go two seconds without making it about Harley is like nothing I’ve ever seen before.

Cole did well
Kelly did well
A. Reid did well
Ryan did well
Maric did well
Dewar did well initially. Once his tank is better he'll kill it
BWilliams cemented his spot for a bit barring injury

The brissie crowd really thought they were hard done by..weird

Owies looked a bit lost but he wasn't advantaged by delivery
Forward delivery after the first quarter was off

Negatives - Noah Long

Noah Long was passenger again 7 possessions for the match only Petch has less as the sub.
Noah had 78% time on ground

That's not good enough at WAFL level let alone at AFL

We are killing this kid has talent but needs time in second's to gain confidence, his pressuring ability is poor the only tackles
he gets are at balls up where he is expected to wrap the player up

He was like that from his first game last year. It's not new behaviour.
Like I said he cops it. He also put extra on his tackles
