Autopsy Round 2, 2025: Positives and Negatives vs Brisbane

I feel that Hough's job on Raynor has been overlooked.
Not only did he minimize Raynor's impact on the game but he also ran off him and created dash for us off half back. Sure, he butchered a few kicks but he was magnificent in his defensive role.
It was nice to see how frustrated Raynor was at times.

First half was a heap of fun. Loved seeing the less established contribute.

Some lesser lights I enjoyed:
  • Brockman with two that he would not have kicked last year.
  • Ginbey's kicking is a real asset coming out of defence, it's long and you can run onto them.
  • Bailey Williams might not be a world beater but he's ours. Flynn can take a holiday until he's put up form that cannot be ignored.
  • Hall - best game I've seen from him, carried some preseason form in.
  • Likewise Hewitt, just being involved for success acts.

+ Dewar (!!), Ryan, Baker, Kelly etc

Negatives
  • Allen
  • Maric / Hough kicking
  • Long
Interesting, I thought Brockman kicked 2 as well but AFL.com only has 1 goal in his stat sheet.

A lot to like, even if much of is in relative terms from week one:

  • Mate, how good was Cole? I think he occasionally suffers from Jamie Cripps Fumblehands Syndrome but he was cool and composed throughout the day - including later on when stamina was low for most of the team. Was thrilled to see him do well.

  • Hough and Ginbey equally impressive down back. Barring a few scrubby kicks when his tank gave out, Maric looks like he's good a future down there too I thought.

  • I thought Mini had a good week at the selection table. Moved a few blokes to places where they probably should have always been (Dewar, Baker) but he showed he's willing to change and adapt. To my surprise, Bailey inclusion was a good one.

  • Baker might not be the cleanest kick in the comp, but you can see his obvious to our team as a standard setter. Bloke near killed himself to set the tone in Q1.

  • Ryan is maturing into an on-field leader. He has poise and composure that can't be taught, but maybe can be role modelled. I hope the young blokes took notice.

  • Owies probably trying a little hard. He caught Jamie Cripps Fumblehands Syndrome a bit yesterday but it's coming from a good place.

  • Long probably needs a spell. Tank needs some work and not sure we can play all of he, Owies and Crippa.

  • Really don't know what to make of Oscar. Either he's underdone, or we've told him to hang back more and offer a target. It isn't working.

  • I think Archer Reid has had a good couple of games but his body is going to be cooked given his age - give him a week or two in the magoos and bring JWill up imho.

  • Kelly - much better, but do it a few weeks in a row please.

Interesting that Harry doesn't get a mention, did his job and is settling in at AFL level.

I thought he nullified Hipwood quite well - I know he kicked two but from memory at least one of those was a gift

Sometimes a player can just become someone's nemesis no matter what he does on (or off!) field. Or a board punching bag.

Cole is that player. Weird to see given his strong start to the year.

I’ve never understood the Cole bashing. Heard Simpson talk about him last week and how the rest of the defenders love him because he regularly covers for others- the downside of that is he sometimes gets caught out and it’s his man that scores so he gets the blame from supporters

That said, with youngsters like Allan and Grego pushing for their opportunity he’s going to have to keep performing to hold his spot

Yeah I had Raynor down for a huge game but Hough covered him

That's not going to turn opinions around :(

Was definitely Simpson's time to go but I've found him really insightful in the media. Low bar perhaps, but still.

Be great if he could speak little bit louder though instead of soft talking like some shy person in the corner.

Shout out to the tone setter Liam Baker.
From the opening bounce, well throw up, punching the ball forward to set the agenda as to how we are meant to play.
He just gave everything of himself in that first and looked absolutely cooked in the ice vest trying to recover from his feats.
The other 22 players would have seen that and realized what it takes if you want to be successful and it most certainly rubbed off on them.

I was a Flynn preference person but have to admit BW, at the moment, is our best option. Hope he is ok.

Clay just has to play. He is the inside scrappy dog we been looking for and he LOVES getting his hands dirty and body checking the oppo.

Maric will get better in his role with each game he plays and is also a key cog running out from half back.

Dewar, welcome to the big league kid, you belong.

Be-long eh, where was Long? needs a run in Beagles to get some touch and touches.

Ryan, yep we miss a fit Ryan when he's not playing. Just a class above the norm.

Great overall effort and pretty much we were on top of the reigning Premiers on their home turf in conditions that most teams would have struggled in for 2-1/2 quarters.
If not for BW going down in the 3rd and the pretty average umpiring we could have had a bigger upset than Richmonds last week. Now most pundits will look at the result and say typical Eagles, bottom of the ladder.

On the umpiring, i do love the stricter 15m rule as I would much rather see a 18m kick called play on than a 12m kick get paid a mark.
BUT,
Why are defenders constantly called not 15 when it is clearly well over that but forwards can chip kick it 12 and get paid the mark, sometimes even in the same bit of play.

Overall much better and we are clearly on the right path, well done Mini.
Baker you star 😁

For a young side his heart and intensity is much needed but **** me Bakers use by foot took a lot of points off his game. He really needs to do better and there was time he’d snap and out of stoppages and they’d be so shallow it would land just around the centre sqaure marking (literally worse than Sheed and Gaffs snaps around the corner).

I’m actually inclined to keep him in the middle purely because I don’t want to see him turn it over in the back like he did against the suns

Defenders have a thankless job. Cole like many defenders have the odd howler and that's all the supporters remember. He's exactly the type of player we need at the moment doing well. The more senior guy that can lead then younger players. Dropping him is pointless.

Maric really impressed, yes he turned it over late but that's due to fatigue. He rebounded all day, had some nice defensive efforts and clean hands.

Please leave him there.

They trialed him at half back all preseason and watching him I had two concerns.

Firstly, he sometimes bit off more than he could chew with some of his kicks which resulted in turnovers. That said, I liked that he was taking risks and it seemed he was being encouraged to do so - it was more decision making than skill errors which can be improved with experience. Still a work in progress but he showed that in time it can become a weapon for us

The other issue was it wasn’t clear how good defensively he’d be but he looked fairly sound with that yesterday

Like you say he needs to be kept there

I was at the game and didn't even know Rayner was playing until early in the 4th.

Lots of postives to be taken out of that. Most notably for me is McQualter's ability to get something out of the group after round 1 and also not be stubborn with player positions. Perhaps with round 1 he was trying to shoehorn a few players in that he wanted to give a game to due to their pre-season but perhaps wasn't the position that suited them.
Maric getting his half back with kicking duties position from the start and Dewar given a role on the ball. And acknowledging that BWilliams needed a go.
Being flexible while he learns about the group is a good thing.

I'm of the opinion that Jack Williams had nearly become a set and forget KF and 2nd ruck. so would love to get to see him have a crack soon. He was a rare non-Harley highlight from last season.

Cripps and Kelly both improved significantly. Hoping they keep that up.
